another shoulder injury

You guys are right about me being too old to lift heavy anymore. I should have figured that out on my own the last... 3 times I tweaked my back doing dead lifts, or the second time I strained my lat doing heavy rows (that one still hurts). I can't even describe how bad my arthritic neck aches after heavy squats.

The thing is I still have a lot of... motivation to get stronger. I don't think I've really learned my lesson yet. I really pushed hard to get a 520 squat on my 52nd birthday, for example. Missed it by 45lbs, but I did unrack that sucker just to get a feel for it. I can say I'm going to back off, but I know when I get to the gym I'm not going to think about the risk of injury as much as the "need" to lift more.

I can at least skip the max lifts. @rutman is right. It does nothing for building muscle. Maybe I can set a minimum rep count to, say, four. Something like that : )
I go as low as heavy triples thats it. Single rep all out max lifts are tailor made for injury. And if you haven't been injured yet you haven't been at it long enough

I feel old and I'm almost 51 right now and something always seems to hurt or not work for me, not to mention getting severely injured in an accident years ago so that also puts a perspective on things.

For lifting I now mainly lift for reps not for weight and that pretty much puts my workouts on cruise control.

Saw my family doc a couple of hours ago. He says he thinks it's a tear, and probably a bad one. My shoulder is still aching from the examination. Can't get in to the ortho doc until the 20th. I guess I'll be doing a lot of BW squats for a while.

Ouch, if it is indeed a complete tear then that'll sideline you for a while. Hang tough you'll recover fast enough if you have a competent surgeon.

Sorry to hear this Flenser , especially after what you went thru last year . I HATE aging and I hate injuries, it gets in the way of everything Im trying to accomplish. Goodluck and speedy recovery ! ;)~Ogh

I did a lot of research before I saw her the first time. She is very competent - and very busy. I worry she will develop an attitude one day and decide anyone as careless as me doesn't deserve her services.

Was going to start taking Geno again, but from what I just read the stuff I got from Astro may be fake. Not really in the mood to try another source. I guess I will do without.

Perhaps you should come clean with your ortho and promise her you will be a good boy and won't ever cross her again :)

Not what I wanted to hear....any consolation I hurt my back again.
In this case I would rather suffer alone. Not lifting is almost as bad as lifting injured! I might go in tomorrow and watch other people lift : )

Bet you'll be hearing her nagging voice in your head whenever you go heavy lifting again lol
More likely the PTs from rehab. One tried to convince me the bench press is a poor chest exercise and always damages the shoulders. I'm just going to pretend "I told you so" means "I'm getting turned on massaging your shoulder".

Yep old habits die hard..have you tried db bench presses?

Don’t know exactly what happened. I do a max lift check about every three weeks on bench. I was expecting at least 2 reps at 295, since I’ve already done that twice before. I was really hoping to get a single out of 315 for the first time. But for some reason I failed on the first rep at 275.

Wasn’t expecting to fail, so I had no spotter, just the rack and the pins. When I rolled the bar off my chest onto the pins I got a dull pain in my shoulder and triceps – the same damned shoulder that just recovered from labrum surgery. There was no question I injured it, so I just cleaned the bar and went home. I still have no idea what I did to hurt it, or WTF happened to my strength on that set.

After two days it still hurts A LOT. I have trouble raising my arm over my head. I know I need to go see the doc, but she’s going to give me shit for ruining her good work. Another MRI and probably another 6 months recovery after surgery. It’s back to just doing legs and a few accessories. Damn I’m bummed about this. I don’t suppose there’s anyway to work back and chest without straining the shoulders and tris, weighted nipple raises or something...
Not lime about the injury, the nipe raises! Sorry to hear bro

Been doing rehab exercises every day. The shoulder is still extremely sore and aches continuously, but I feel like it is healing. Range of motion is a little better, though I still can't handle any weight. I can barely manage a 2.5lb DB for most of the weighted rehab moves. I think I have frost bite from all the icing..

Discovered yesterday I can do front squats with the crossed arms method. I felt really clumsy in that position, but did crank out a few good sets. I was unable to even touch the bar with my fingers with it behind my neck, though. This morning my legs and mid-back are pretty sore, so I'm happy just getting the front squats in.

Still no way to hit chest or lats. Wondering about the sympathetic growth idea, where you get symmetric growth by working only one side. I could do DB rows and 1-handed pushups for example.

I can't get symmetric growth working both sides :(

Very sorry about your shoulder. I live with a minor labraltear. Bench is COMPLETELY out for me. Flyes and dips are gtg for chest development, and high rep OHP is all I do for chest/shoulder development. Not worth lifting heavy anymore IMO. But yes I do miss it. I KNOW IT REALLY SUX. But at least you are in the position to get it fixed.

I've gained 45lbs since getting out of prison last Feb, and as a result have accrued numerous injuries due to lacking connective tissue strength. I cannot even BW squat atm (PFS) but am able to make gains with step ups, leg ext, LIGHT sumo dead, glute kickback (like a woman) , back hypers, SLDL

Point being I get very, down and depressed every time an injury keeps me outta the gym. But every one of them has recovered enough to let me keep going and I have faith that I will be able to squat 300+ Again this year. I just pulled 315 yesterday and nothing got worse. Patience and positivity.
