Bodybuilding vs. powerlifting

Was just looking for some input on what you guys prefer. I've been lifting off and on for about 7 years. (Mostly off....) but I have always lifted trying to get bigger instead of focusing on strength. During a deployment last year I decided to give powerlifting a go since a buddy of mine was all about the west side barbell method and was very strong so I figured I could learn a few things. I enjoyed it very much but other than those 12 weeks or so I've always just lifted heavy and enjoyed myself.

Right now I am currently coming to an end of my first cycle and wondering if I should dabble into some powerlifting again to try and set some lifetime PR goals. Stats now :

Age:23
Ht: 5'8
Wt: 173

I've always felt I've been somewhat strong for my size. (160 is the heaviest I've ever been naturally)

Currently:

Bench: 305
Squat: 295 (I know I know...this is one of the main reasons I want to do some powerlifting)
Deadlift: 435

I've always had some numbers set in my mind to accomplish on each movement and it would be awesome to reach that goal of a

335 bench
405 squat
500 deadlift

What do you prefer and what are your maxes and your weight/height.??

I say dabble with the powerlifting. There's those guys who like to look like they can lift a lot of weight (even though they cant). There's guys who dont look like they can lift a lot and can (but who wants that?). And then there's powerlifters, who look like they can lift a lot and can!

PRs all day!!!!

Powerlifting.

Height: 5'10"
Weight: around 198lbs
Best recent lifts in the last month or so
Squat with wraps: 450x3
Paused bench: 345x3
Deadlift: 565x3

Doing a meet Saturday, so I'll see where my maxes are.

All time best lifts at 235ish pounds
Squat with wraps: 500
Paused bench: 370
Deadlift: 600

Join us, OP. Come over to the powerlifting side.

Oh yeah

Age: Yes
Height: 6'0
Weight: Sometimes

Best lifts this year:
Bench: 375
Squat: 425
DL: 445

Just had hernia surgery because powerlifting = injuries. Its not a question of IF powerlifting kills you, but WHEN.

GO POWERLIFTING!

I don't really agree with powerlifting=injury per say.

Its just lifting heavy=injury. Bodybuilders get injuried just as much as plers. And usually its just a muscle tear. As where bodybuilders doing that time under tension shit they have all sorts of bone problems.

Join the dark side, Luke. I started PL about 3 months ago, BB for a very long time prior. Love it, the power increase is awesome and I'm so hungry for more. listen to the boys over in the PL threads, tons of knowledge to share.

I would say give powerlifting a go, but please do not forget to train accessories. Alot of powerlifters (not all) don't focus enough on accessories, but anyway 500 dead and squat are easily obtainable without going the powerlifters route. Good luck

Step on over. You will never look back. I can't train a regular bro split without adding my Pl lifting schemes. It's an addiction for big numbers and size

Definitely would be doing acessory work. I'm going to start out with the Westside Barbell Method. I've read up a lot on it and admire Louie Simmons and everything he does. What an animal. And to add to that if anyone else is wondering about accessory work to FOCUS on your weaker body parts!

Sitting at 415lb DL right now (could probably pull 435 atleast I'd be happy to be pulling 500 in a year and I think it's very possible

Just push yourself I was hitting in the 400s natty conventional. Don't injure yourself, and try to get the best of both worlds 3D delts and numbers to brag about

I'm a powerlifter but do accessory work in more of a bodybuilding fashion particularly during offseason.

Give it a try OP. Your numbers are solid and you will definitely thicken up some powerlifting.

Push pull only currently
recent competition Pr's at 49-years-old
bench 400+ @196
deadlift 570+ @194

Christ @RodgerThat I knew you were a younger guy but I didn't know I was more than twice your age.

There's no need to be strictly one or the other.. Train the big lifts like a PLer and assistance lifts for hypertrophy. Best of bother worlds.
