Can touching a barbell in the gym get you sick with the coronavirus?

While many restaurants, bars and gyms shut down during the pandemic, others have continued operating with limited capacity. New research shows this sacrifice could be effective at curbing transmissions — and density caps may offer one way to keep the economy humming along during the worst of the winter wave.

Data from early in the pandemic reveals there’s a “sweet spot” where infections can be reduced while keeping business steady. That magic number: around 20 percent. If indoor capacity in public spaces like restaurants, gyms, hotels and grocery stores was reduced to just 20 percent, we could prevent 87 percent of new infections. Meanwhile, these businesses would lose just 42 percent of their visits, on average, according to research from scientists at Stanford and Northwestern.

The findings bolster capacity limits as an effective coronavirus strategy, keeping businesses alive while limiting infections. Researchers found they are so effective because they reduce the risks during peak hours, encouraging patrons to stay home or visit at less crowded times, according to Serina Chang, a PhD student at Stanford and co-author of the study.

“Capacity caps disproportionately target those risky locations in their busiest hours. This is why we see the promising trade-off curve, where a smaller reduction in visits can result in a large reduction in infections,” she said.

The finding should influence how cities respond to the pandemic now. Rather than citywide shutdowns and stay-at-home orders, stricter density caps paired with other measures could curb the coronavirus while allowing the economy to limp along.

Think of someone you love unconditionally. Choose the person who makes your heart fill with joy at a thought: Is it your child, your parent, your partner, your closest friend? Say their name to yourself, take a slow deep breath and close your eyes.

Now picture that person in a hospital bed. Machines are beeping. Your person is unconscious, on a ventilator. The machine is forcing air into their chest, making it rise and fall steadily. The nurse tells you your person spends 21 hours a day on their stomach, but they are upright today because today is their day.

Sometimes the machine sounds an alert because your person is fighting against the ventilator, trying to still maintain some independence. It suddenly feels so morbid to think how casually we all say “so-and-so was a fighter.”

Picture yourself next to your person, holding a cold, limp hand. It feels heavy because you are doing all the lifting. You catch a glimpse of your own reflection in the window and see a full-body paper suit, surgical gloves, an N95 mask and a face shield. A few minutes ago, the nurses asked you your glove size and you didn’t know how to answer, so now your gloves feel too tight.

You realize the staff is telling you how to prepare for your person’s “transition.” That’s a nice way of saying your person is going to die. Right now. And you will be there when it happens. You already feel guilty because, between the deep ache in your chest, you feel an odd comfort knowing they won’t be in any pain anymore.

You think back to the 10 days before your person was put on a ventilator. They couldn’t get enough of a breath to relay a verbal will, so the two of you played a game of yes-or-no questions to give your person a chance to lay out their thoughts and end-of-life wishes without wasting air.

There were several other sources also besides social media which isn't really a source. Would love to see the data behind that claim.

Where's that dangerous flu
This is no way an attack on you or your views. However, thereis a difference though between the memes your posting and scallys documents/articles, maybe if you posted relative articles you could sway someones opinion. But posting memes just talking shit is not going to do that.

i am in the fence for both viewpoints, but i am very easy going as we will see what happens in time. Both sides have valid points, but they are all opinions. There is not many known facts.

except the virus does spread from one person to the other through droplets and aerosols. That is all we know.

also when people are close together in the same room, it spreads more then being outside. These are the only things that we know for sure.

Also masks prevent the spread moreso then not wearing one. To a point.

I agree, I wasnt really trying to sway anyone. Just shocked about the thread in general. How would everyone feel if me or several of us each had a thread where we were posting everything from our Twitter feed there everyday.

Yeah there's a virus out there. Its also being dramatized imo though.

I could understand posting studies he did or even some articles. This just seems very one sided and copy paste straight from social media (i can do that). So much so that I would say its only for 2 reasons politics and raise post count. Neither of which I agree with because it should be about saving lives and educational.

I've said my opinions and will not continue to waste my time with something I can not control. Like what gets posted.

I also tend to wonder if that is really scally, I thought he was a well respected doctor. I doubt someone like him would waste time talking about Covid all day long on a steroid message board. Surely he has better things to do. I guess if it really is him maybe he is getting a laugh out of all this in some way, he can’t really believe all that junk he reposts. I think it is probably someone logging into his account.

I dunno. I doubt someone else is logging in. He would have caught it by now I would expect. He is somewhat short tempered from my experiences though in that special meso way lol. So it seems odd he didn't lash out at me.

He may be a genius when it comes to certain things but clearly when it comes to covid the liberal bias stands out like a sore thumb. Its okay to not like a party or agree with them but right now many people are using this exact same tactic to influence people politically and it has nothing to do with health, the real concern. The only other thing which I dont think he is worried about is his post count getting a 3000 boost.

If someone like me or Joe blow made a thread called will this protect America and posted my extensive highly conservative viewpoints and memes all day straight from twitter. I dont think people would like that thread always being up top.

Idk, maybe if the thread had a different title and was stickied in the politics section it wouldn't strike a nerve with me.

He’s as much of a doctor as you and me now.

@Jankauskas holy fucking tits man. Have you seen the trump thread that he has been spamming for years and thousands of pages in the political section? Why hasn't anyone complained or done anything about this?

If I find a 3rd thread I swear I'm gonna lose it and ask Millard if he considers it spamming or inappropriate. Legit years and thousands upon thousands of back to back twitter links. There is no need for this.

i don't think anyone has done anything about it, because as spammy as it is, he's staying on topic with his disdain for the commander in chief, and doesn't become argumentative or troll members that go in there and try to rattle his cage.

The most simple solution would be to put the Doc on ignore or stay out of the couple of threads that he calls home.
