computer question lmao

dvd burner

If your cd-rom is old just take it out and toss it or give it away. ur dvd burner will read cds also so u really dont need it. use the space to put ur dvd burner.
The 4 spots on the back of the dvd drive are 1 audio 2 digital audio 3 ide 4 power.

use all the stuff from the way it was and its just plug and play. remove all cables from the back of cd rom and place them into dvd drive. no need to worry about master slave jumper settings ect ( a jumper is a small piece of plastic)
good luck and if u have anymore puter questions just ask.

Pooka

If you are out of free power plugs coming from the power supply to plug your dvd burner into, they sell spliters for those as well at Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. They plug into one female ended power cable coming from the power supply and splits into two female ended power cables, so you would have one for the cd-rom and dvd burner.

Jumpers go like this. 3 settings:

- master
- slave
- cable select

You can only have 2 things on each ribbon cable, one has to be master, the other has to take it up the ass.

If you use cable select they both have to be set to cable select or it all gets very confusing. (why didn't they have it like this from the start?)

The jumpers are bastard little fiddly things, plastic on outside and metal on inner. Even awkward with tweezers. They connect 2 bits of metal. There's also some on the motherboard.

There are usually at least 3 ribbon cable connections on the motherboard (the main board that everything connects to):

- primary IDE
- secondary IDE
- floppy disk drive connector

The DVD and the like goes on the IDE connectors. Maybe you haven't got a floppy disk drive?

You may also have another two blue or black ribbon cable connectors for RAID and some smaller squarer connecters for SATA, but if you got a computer that good (I haven't got either) you should know better.

thanks for the replies guys. UPdate, i hooked the shit up and forgot to set the jumpers and started the cpu up and got an error that said something about children and 32 bit? i dont know wtf it was talking about

so than i took the drives out and both were on slave. i took that lil plastic piece and put it on master. Now when i start the cpu it says you have a Config-Sys error on line 13. WTF does that mean? Also, now my cpu wont shut off, i have to hold the button in to kill it and if i open my computer it only shows a floppy drive. Problem is that I HAVE NO FLOPPY DISC DRIVE LIKE THE GUY ABOVE STATED

i just woke up. my brain isn't functioning right now. i think about it and reply later........my suggestion right now.
just hook up the DVD player, to the secondary IDE, set as master, plug it into the TOP plug on the ribbon cable. fuck the cd rom for now

sleeping in late huh? Ok, when i go home this afternoon i will unplug the cdrom totally, than just plug dvd into the motherboard like the previous cdrom was. The previous cd rom was set to slave already. is that odd? i will post about the error in a new thread
