Cycling legend Greg LeMond continues to tarnish his legacy with his petty jealousy and rantings about Lance Armstrong in an interview with Anderson Cooper 360°. He thinks what Armstrong did in cycling is so evil, he should go to jail.

“In 2001 in an interview you said, ‘If Lance is clean, it’s the greatest comeback in the history of sports. If he isn’t it would be the greatest fraud.’ Do you think what Lance Armstrong did was the greatest fraud in the history of sports?” Cooper asked in an interview that will air Monday night on CNN.

“Absolutely. Absolutely. The greatest fraud was that, I mean, I know his physical capabilities. He’s a top 30 at best. I mean, at best. No matter what. If he was clean and everybody else was clean, he’s a top 30 at best. He’s not capable of winning the Tour. He’s not capable of the top five,” LeMond said.

When asked by Cooper what should happen to Armstrong now, LeMond was forceful.

“This is not a sporting infraction. This is criminal,” LeMond said. Cooper also asked if Armstrong should go to jail. LeMond said he thinks so.

“I do, yea. This was an organized mafia and he literally tried to destroy people,” he said.

Didn't sport science show why he was so good and wasn't part of that some genetics with his lung capacity being alot greater than most people?

Wikipedia has his stats. I think he was very high but not exceptional. Others like Indurain, and yes.......Lemond were higher.

I watched Armstrong get every tour win. It was fantastic watching an american beat the French at "their" sport. I didn't want to believe the doping accusations since he denied them so strongly. Should he go to jail? No.

Lemond is a tool. Armstrong may have doped but you can't deny he was a master tactician and influenced the sport heavily.

Physiological variables are only one part of the story. Genetics is certainly important but doesn't provide the whole story. Few people were "smarter" than Armstrong; he took the scientific approach to cycling to an entirely new level than any of his predecessors. His reliance on science to make him a better a cyclist went far beyond doping. When combined with his physiologic gifts and his unparallelled competitive drive, he was practically unstoppable at his peak.

fuck greg. punk thinks some one has to be incarcerated for steroids. he got caught thats enough in my book. fuck greg again for even suggesting it.
now about his contract with companies he represented that could be considered. but even then a civil lawsuit would be best.

I think thats Lance's argument. Everybody was doing it = the playing field was equal. Seems to reason that if you took that same group of cyclist that Armstrong competed against and took everybody off the EPO, clen, and T, then Lance would still win. I get LeMond to a point but no doubt he's got an axe to grind. LeMond believes that when Trek began to promote Armstrong due to Lance's popularity, he (LeMond) lost millions. He's right of course. Lance would not have won without doping and LeMond would still be America's most prolific winner and a more marketable commodity. It seems to me Lance's choice during that era was 1. dope, fit in, compete and have a chance to win or 2. Not dope and use your popularity as a cancer surviving star to take a vocal ethical stance against the use of doping - demand the sport be cleaned up. Tough choice.

I could be wrong but I don't think lemond is saying he should go to jail directly from the use of AAS. I think lemond is saying he should go to jail for the fraud. It's like when a company lies to investors about their investments. All of his endorsements and winnings was based on a lie. Whether or not steroids are the deciding factor in his wins, armstrong presented himself as clean and wasn't. But who is to say the companies investing in him didn't know he was on roids.
Then you also have to think about all the consumers who spent money to essentially pay the salary of armstrong. A lot of people didn't want to believe he was doping, and that belief is what they liked about him. Beats cancers, beats tons of other cyclist who probably dope while he is clean. He was an inspiration for many and it was all a lie cause he wasn't clean. like i said though.steroids is not directly responsible for his success, it probably played but a minuscule role in all honesty. Lance was a hard worker and intelligent as they come.
None of this is to say I think lance should go to jail. I'm just examining lemond's reasoning for saying he belongs in jail.

Most of the former pro cyclists from the 80s and early 90s are not so much outspoken against doping in general - after all it was just as pervasive during their era - they are outspoken against a very specific type of doping (EPO).

Their PEDs (amphetamines, steroids) were ok and acceptable. The more effective PEDs (EPO) that became available to cyclists that followed them were not.

Its not like other elite cyclists ain't doing it

in any competitive sport guys will always want the upper hand and that is what aas do for you. in this case you have juice monkeys crying about other juice monkeys whipping their asses.

Lance Armstrong is pussy too. He never failed a test and played inside the rules and still went on TV and admitted he used. I hate him for that.

Who's LeMond kidding, how many drug tests did he fail??? They all have failed at least one if not more drug tests.................except Lance Armstrong!!

He did got caught doping but couldn't be held accountable because there was no "approved" test for EPO at the time.
