Dogs

In 2018, the General Social Survey for the first time included a battery of questions on pet ownership. The findings not only quantified the nation’s pet population — nearly 6 in 10 households have at least one —they made it possible to see how pet ownership overlaps with all sorts of factors of interest to social scientists.

Like happiness.

[W]hen you break the data down by pet type — cats, dogs or both — a stunning divide emerges: Dog owners are about twice as likely as cat owners to say they’re very happy, with people owning both falling somewhere in between.

The General Social Survey data show that dog owners, for instance, are more likely to be married and own their own homes than cat owners, both factors known to affect happiness and life satisfaction.

A 2016 study of dog and cat owners, on the other hand, yielded greater happiness ratings for dog owners relative to cat people. It attributed the contrast, at least in part, to differences in personality: Dog owners tended to be more agreeable, more extroverted and less neurotic than cat owners. And a 2015 study linked the presence of a cat in the home to fewer negative emotions, but not necessarily an increase in positive ones.

Stepping away from the data, cat owners might protest that ownership isn’t about “happiness” at all: There’s something about felines that is grander and more mysterious — something that can’t be captured in a public opinion poll.

“A cat has absolute emotional honesty,” as Ernest Hemingway put it. “Human beings, for one reason or another, may hide their feelings, but a cat does not.”

Guys last night was the night I put my boy diesel down. 7 yr old bully. Best dog a man could ever ask for. Fierce loving proud dog. Broke my heart holding him through all that. I look back and feel I could of done different. He had surgery 9 months ago to remove bladder stones he couldn’t pee. They said it was genetic and there was only one formulated dog food to help with this. Which he was secretly allergic too. So we just waited for it to happen again and send we would put him down. Can’t believe it came back so quick n literally over the weekend went from peeing streams to a couple drips all day. Broke my heart he was the best. I lost my older brother last year. And he hurt close to that too. When you say they are family. It’s cuz they are. I will for ever remember you diesel F27B49BB-D7F4-410F-9F18-48ACF1F6F953.jpeg

Sorry for the loss of your brother.

Sorry for the loss of your buddy Diesel. What a perfect name! Those dogs always look like they're smiling. That feeling of you could have done different is normal, I know I felt the same way when I put my girl down. You did the best you could do at that time. It was just his time bro sounds like he was hurting. He's okay now.

I am sorry for your loss. Chloe, one of our cats, passed this past Monday. Charlie, one of our dogs, passed away a few years ago. He had bladder stones removed about a year prior. All my best ...

He was a beauty. Sorry to hear you had to do that.

Stated another way: not only is human ownership heritable in dogs, but dog ownership is heritable in humans. These two species have lived together for thousands of years, so we should not be surprised to find genetic signatures in both.

Pet cats is another matter, however.

Fall T, Kuja-Halkola R, Dobney K, Westgarth C, Magnusson PKE. Evidence of large genetic influences on dog ownership in the Swedish Twin Registry has implications for understanding domestication and health associations. Scientific Reports 2019;9:7554. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-019-44083-9
Dogs were the first domesticated animal and, according to the archaeological evidence, have had a close relationship with humans for at least 15,000 years. Today, dogs are common pets in our society and have been linked to increased well-being and improved health outcomes in their owners. A dog in the family during childhood is associated with ownership in adult life. The underlying factors behind this association could be related to experiences or to genetic influences.

We aimed to investigate the heritability of dog ownership in a large twin sample including all twins in the Swedish Twin Registry born between 1926 and 1996 and alive in 2006. Information about dog ownership was available from 2001 to 2016 from national dog registers. The final data set included 85,542 twins from 50,507 twin pairs with known zygosity, where information on both twins were available in 35,035 pairs. Structural equation modeling was performed to estimate additive genetic effects (the heritability), common/shared environmental, and unique/non-shared environmental effects.

We found that additive genetic factors largely contributed to dog ownership, with heritability estimated at 57% for females and 51% for males. An effect of shared environmental factors was only observed in early adulthood. In conclusion, we show a strong genetic contribution to dog ownership in adulthood in a large twin study.

We see two main implications of this finding:
(1) genetic variation may have contributed to our ability to domesticate dogs and other animals and
(2) potential pleiotropic effects of genetic variation affecting dog ownership should be considered in studies examining health impacts of dog ownership.

My wonderful Blaze hurt his right shoulder. We had to take him to a 24 hour vet the other night around 11pm. He twisted it somehow. He let out a loud Yelp and started to cry a little. He layed down, started panting heavily and wouldn't move. For starters, he doesn't pant, ever. He also is insanely ignorant to pain so these behaviors were concerning.

He got his exam, a medicine to help with his discomfort and we scheduled an appointment with a surgeon. The surgeon got him, sedated him and did xrays and an ultra sound on his shoulders. He strained his shoulder and has a little arthritis going on but nothing requires surgery apparently, so that's a win.

My wife and I, and our son, have high beds. We were told that could he contributing to his shoulder problems, the jumping down specifically. Time to get doggie steps for the old man. He is 7 and weighs in at 80#. Dont want to contribute to his issues anymore :(

I'm so happy I dont have biological children, I'd loose my mind anytime something bad happened. I absoloutly hate, beyond all comprehension, not having the ability to help him. It makes me so upset.

Hope all you guys are doing ok.
