Favorite dog breeds?

Rottweilers hands down my number one but I do also have a special affinity for Dogue De Bordeaux (French mastiffs) for trainability and companionship it’s definitely Rottweilers but something awesome to be said for a dog that was bred for hunting bears with the biggest skulls in the canine world. Only drawback to both is life expectancy and joint issues.

Also I almost got a Kangal for farm protection but decided on a Rottweiler. You ever been around a Kangal?

I had never heard of this, so had a Google.
This thing is massive:

Weight: Female: 40–50 kg, Male: 48–60 kg

Height: Female: 63–75 cm, Male: 70–80 cm

Origin: Sivas

Speed: 56 km/h (Maximum)

"Thanks to their superior shepherding skills and protective instincts, they can protect farm animals such as sheep and lambs from dangerous wild flocks by establishing dominance even in very large areas. In contrast to their large size and deterrent attitude, they are a very friendly breed. However, they still need to be subjected to a good education. They can be easily raised with an authoritarian leader.<
They have appeared in movies such as "Cats & Dogs," "Kate & Leopold," and "The Benefits of Being a Wallflower.”
They rarely make a sound unless there is a threat.

It’s likely that the first Anatolian Shepherd Dogs came to the United States in the late 1930s. They were part of a Department of Agriculture project to determine which dog made the best sheepdog. The Secretary of Agriculture and the man in charge of the program, Henry Wallace, only learned of the breed while talking about the experiment with a Turkish ambassador at a White House dinner. The ambassador promised to send a male and a female dog to the secretary.

The project took a turn for the worse when the dogs arrived. The female turned out to be pregnant and sick with a parasite. She had a litter of 12 puppies, who soon grew so big that they ate the entire project out of house and home. The experiment was shut down and the dogs sold".

Your dog breed is even heavier than this (and so slower) (Female: 40–65 kg
Male: 50–79 kg), but it comes from the same region and was bred for the same purposes.
You never told me you have sheep and stuff...

I could never have a dog that is heavier than me, lol.
How do I take him walkies.
More like viceversa.

This one here it says that if they see small animals they go for them, they hate small things, apparently, lol.
The male of this 80 cm is half my height, lol, so maybe I qualify as a small thing.
This is too funny.

It's just my opinion, but you are missing out not having dogs and a toddler together. My dogs are so gentle with my kid and he will have some sweet memories when he grows up. They need supervision of course but so do cats. Cats are strictly predatory carnivores, let that sink in.

Affirmative. Or doggo argentinos.

See above. D. Argentinos are the best choice for that scenario. Rotties are heard dogs by design, boxers are personal security, argentinos are big game hunters and they thrive on a place you describe.

Presas need special treatment and the appropriate temperament or many things can go wrong.
Man, I lived in a little, island condo when I was in the military. It was basically a duplex but small and only one level for both. But the guy on the other side of the duplex had a Rhodesian Ridgeback.

I remember being frustrated with him because he was never home and he left that big ass dog stuck in that tiny, duplex apartment. And that giant ass dog would be so bored and lonely. And we shared a wall so I would hear that beast howling and whining daily.

After several months I was able to warm the idea up in the guy’s head enough to let me eventually take his dog out and let him play with mine in the vacant island lot next to us. But still I feel terrible for that dog. He was a stud too. And they are cool dogs if you’ve never been around one.

I like Mastiffs too but I avoid having them because they don’t live very long. Like 6 years iirc. And I get too attached for that.

This would be you hahahah but nah, Isha is actually really good on walkies she was trained to walk by your side, kinda have to with a dog her size or it becomes unmanageable even for me, sometimes it gets close like shell freak out in a blue moon and require me to actually put the handle down.. which barely can lol idk what we’d do if we had a male, because isha is actually on the smaller side lol

Remember I told you shed come up to your waist ? i wasn’t lying lol you need to get your passport so you can come over and we can get a picture with tiny you and her hahah standing up she can put her pawns on my shoulders and I think itd be hilarious to see her on your shoulders lol her face would prolly be over yours hahaha

so maybe I qualify as a small thing.
I died laughing at this lol funniest thing I have read in a while lol

Yeah I have sheep and intend to grow the flock so I happened to research them a little after someone offered me a Kangal puppy and they seemed like a really good fit for my needs.

And if dog size is interesting to you then check out the Neapolitan Mastiff. Or the Caucasian Shepherds. I’ve been around a giant English Mastiff before. Big deep bark that will scare the piss outta someone that he doesn’t know.

I always had a hunch that a Rottweiler would be a good fit for me even though I never really spent much time around them before. But yeah I would tend to agree. They are cool as shit.

Giant skull, mastiff looking nose and bottom of jaws. He likes to go under my crotch and then through and turns to face the direction I’m facing and wrap himself halfway around me. I don’t know if it’s like a protective move or what. He’s never been formally trained or taught that move.

Lol they are seriously like total gear heads just showing up a party like Joey from Friends. Just busting through the door and saying what’s up.

It looks cruel but this brand and with the spikes, it’s the only way to control and teach a big excited dog. A regular chocker just won’t cut it and since it has the spikes I think it actually gives them a little space to breather better.

I disagree HEAVILY with this. i have a big dog and NEVER needed this. These are cruel in my opinion, the only ones using those are the ones that suck ass as owners.

I have never seen this.
Have you actually used it or know anyone who did?
I would think anything that may cause pain or discomfort could eventually make a dog more nervous/upset?
Idk...

IMG_5034.webpIt looks inhumane but how a would a tiny woman train a big ass dog that out weighs her and is a hell of a lot stronger. Dumb ass

I have friends that have had to use them, I’ve never even needed to use a regular chocker without the prongs. Just a regular collar and a few good yanks here and there.

But I’m definitely not against them in certain situations.

If they are that bad and cruel they would be illegal.

It’s a training tool to be used for a short time, the better trainer you are the faster u can stop using it.

My Bernese Mountain dog was awesome. Growing up we had a beagle and she was the best. We have mini poodles now and they’re also a good time. Super smart and well mannered.

I like all dogs I guess.
I have a female friend that breeds the Bernese with the poodle. I think they are called Bernadoodles.

But cool ass dogs with great temperaments. They are particularly good on boats and around water. Man I think she gets like $2200 to $2500 per puppy. I think she has a waiting list for the next couple litters too.

But I hope nobody reading this decides to take up breeding thinking it’s a cash grab. It’s more of a passion for my friend than it is about money. Hell, she’s well off due to her husband’s career and has been for a while.

She really wants to grace fellow humans with this particular breed and make their lives better. You can hear the passion in her voice when she starts talking about them.

I’ve never bred anything but I would like to have one litter from the genes of my Rottweiler. And I just want 2 males from the litter and then I’m done as a breeder. But I don’t know how or where to look to facilitate that. I guess I’m just hoping to hear from someone with a female with good genes and then I would propose my offer. But I wish I had a way to proactively search for that in or near my area. Not sure where to look.

Yeah if you have ever had to break up a scuffle and had to pull a large breed out of it, you would appreciate one of those collars.

If it’s a giant breed and they are truly trying to get at something you understand how hard they can be to handle. I’ve been pulled all over the place by big dogs with regular collars and leashes. If they truly trying to get at something they can pull pretty damn hard and if you’re not ready for it they can pull the leash right out of your hands or even take you along for the ride if you do have a good grip.

I’ve never used one of those collars but I can see the need in some cases. I’ve had some experienced handlers tell me they are not cruel when used properly and with the training to accompany the use of that style collar.

Full stop. No the hell it isnt. No good trainer is using those

Maybe Laclark89 is thinking about dogs that have an aggressive temperament.

Idk about those.
They always say it's not the dog, it is the owner.
But in some cases, I believe that up to a point.

Do you think they were wrong to ban pitbulls, japanese Tosa , Dogo Argentino, Fila Braziliero and XL Bully where I am?

He’ll yea I’ve given almost zero thumbs down I just reply I disagree, u wanted to be a little b and dislike my comment you could have just posted u disagreement but wanted to talk crap + a thumbs down. I bet u voted for Kamala Harris and support the lgb what ever movement. I posted facts what great trainers do, cop dog trainers are the best of the best.

I’ve never used one personally but I have heard the opposite from experienced handlers and trainers. I thought they were cruel myself before hearing someone knowledgeable speak about the use of them.
Like wise , and I felt I was gana get my shoulder dislocated from a 90ish pound dog and I’m a bigger man.
