First Cycle, started today

I remember last March I was about 260, I could've sworn up and down I was about 20% BF. Then I got in a BodPod one day and it told me I was 26%. Needless to say I was pretty freakin frustrated, but it certainly motivated me to lose weight.
That’s the truth. I’m on a vicious bulk cycle so I don’t care too much about the fat, but I plan to cut after this.

I fully understand, I remember you saying your goal was to gain weight, and if you're competing HW in strongman, your weight doesn't matter too much so long as it doesn't prevent you from being competitive.

My comment was more to say, maybe your 24% is actually 29%. Or maybe it is not, those scales certainly aren't accurate for that.

I agree that it might really be 29%, which is still likely too much. I was expecting 34% from the scale, so it’s an improvement. Lol

Strongman is sort of a goal for me, but likely something that will take years to achieve anyway, so I’m taking it moderately slow while placing emphasis on my overall health. I may just bulk and cut and remain cut.

You've gotta start somewhere. I REALLY wish I had found strongman at 21... or even 26 instead of waiting until I was 31

Me too!! I’ve always wanted to be a bodybuilder, even as a kid. I’d buy bodybuilding magazines and think about how I could achieve that.

Being poor all my life and blaming everyone except myself ensured I didn’t meet that goal. There were no gyms in the area and nobody could afford weights. So I decided to leave.

Thank God that mentality got turned that around before it was too late or I’d probably still be stuck in a rut. So I got educated and made something of myself.

Now I have a nice professional gym of my own about half the size of Brian Shaw’s and I’m happy with it. No more excuses!

Ok, haven’t updated in a while, but realistically I don’t have any sides. Just got a lab report scheduled for next week, and we’ll see if I need to add Arimidex or anything.

Switched to a hypertrophy / strength hybrid and I’m noticing gains.

4x15 bench, and bar curls
3x5 shoulder press
3x15 dumbbell curls

Previously I wasn’t feeling shit in my biceps. So I switched to exercises more likely to tax my biceps and man is it burning. Chest too.

I’m getting a brutal core workout from the bar curls. While doing these, I’m squeezing my abs, back and chest. It’s rough!

Here are my stats:

Weight: 325lbs (28lb gain in 5 weeks?)
Body fat: 30.8% (wtf at this scale?)
Muscle mass: 221lbs (68.3%)
Base caloric burn rate: 2600 cals
Actual caloric consumption: 8000 calories/day
Daily protein consumption: 160-300g
BMI: 35.6
Body water: 49% (seems to be going way down, wtf at this scale? But fuck im horribly thirsty and can’t drink enough water)

Waiting on DOMS to disappear and jumping into a much bigger hypertrophy program for my core and upper body.

Massive vascularity gains in the last few weeks. They’re protruding through the fat and are very visible. I think once I cut it’ll look amazing.

Kudos to doing all the homework. One of the best first cycle posts ive ever seen in decades of browsing bb forums.

Best of luck with everything.

Is that you in your avatar? If it is, you certainly aren't 31% BF
Nah, it’s Halfthor. We are roughly the same height. I’m sure going by appearance I’m about 24%. This scale doesn’t work well for tall people.

Or at all, other than measuring your base weight. For example, even my doctor suggests not using BMI for my height.

These scales, and DEXA scans, are pretty wrong and easily influenced by the amount of food or water you’ve consumed. There’s no way I’m 30% lol.

Gotcha, when I hop in the bodpod, I always make sure I have been fasting for at least 8 hours.

BMI is a shit measurement for people that have anything more than the slightest amount of lean mass on their body. My BMI is like 31 or so (which makes me obese by BMI standards), but my BF% is much closer to 13-14.

How are you dealing with strongman with that little BF %?

I don't really understand the question. Are you asking if it is hard to be competitive in strongman with such low body fat percentage? Are you asking about my strength or energy level? Or something else altogether?

Overall, strongman competitors, even the HW's, are coming in much leaner and more athletic. This is far more prevalent in MW and LW, where you have to maximize body composition to make yourself the strongest and most athletic you can be.

In about the last 5-10 years, strongman, and all strength athletes are getting away from the "mass moves mass" mantra. I think most guys should be fine in the 10-12% BF range for strongman.

I myself am actually down 13-14 lbs in 5 weeks. I hired a nutritionist and I am going to try to walk in at comp weight instead of trying to water cut. I had enough fat on me to make it happen. I am 233.8 as of this morning (started at 247) and my weight class tops out at 231.4. I have gotten stronger and faster during this cut as well.

Yeah, I’ve been part of the “mass moves mass” mantra myself. Seems like the recent WSM winners haven’t been the most massive, but a bit more lean.

But it’s definitely easier to put up muscle during a bulk like I’m doing, so I’m going to stick with this and then cut.

Not sure exactly what’s causing my vascularity, but what I’m doing seems to be working. I woke up, looked in the mirror and saw veins protruding from all sides of my arms and legs. Not too shabby.

I’m already up 28lbs in 5 weeks. Pretty sure most of it is water weight, but I’ve gained visibly significant muscle mass. It’s noticeable. If there is a plateau, it seems I’m nowhere near it.

4x15 is the new normal.

30% bf and you’re “vascular”. Ok @Bork. Sure pal.

I’m glad you didn’t plateau. I know you’ve been “hitting it hard” squatting just the bar and benching 100 lbs. gotcha. Steroids are a miracle. Thanks for the update @Exister0

5x15 = 75x bar curls
4x15 = 60x benchpress
4x5 = 20x lat pulldowns
6x5 = 30 seated low-mid rows

Quicky before donating blood. I’m down for the count for the next 3 days.

Need to significantly increase the reps. Rest period is down from 3 minutes to 2 minutes, with a 5 minute rest between exercise types.

Looking much more rounded and much bigger, while also looking much slimmer. And next week, I’ll do the 6 week blood test to see what’s up, then post results. May take another week to get results.

Not gonna lie, I feel really good. Super calm. No tinnitus. And I really want to wine and dine random fat chicks and eat and fuck their sweet pussies until I pass out. Fuck I’m so horny I’m jacking off several times a day… motherfucker… I need to go again.

New gym parts arrived today too. RML-690 representing!

DOMS gone in a day now. May start having a single rest day at this point, or just two, but we’ll see. I need to be careful not to go too hard because I have a tendency to develop rhabdo from excessive exercise.

Looks like I need another day of rest. Got labs done and I’m awaiting results. Between labs, Friday’s exercise and whole blood donation, I’m really exhausted.
