I think any instrument used primarily for analytical capabilities at around 150,000$ not to mention all of the other goodies downstream for ever-evolving m/z,throughput,etc is generally considered to be a decent instrument. I ask, do you choose in situ methodologies? are you able to handle a startling battery of vaporization/ionization techniques? Then getting the cookies into the oven intact? If not, one would certainly hope that he could afford a damn good (preferrably unmarried engineer)who is willing to devote his life to your lab and its technologies haha! But seriously I would walk through hell in a gasoline suit to "play" with these trichotillomania-generating instruments and really,who wouldnt!? But in actuality they are certainly NOT all created equally. Sometimes people speak blissfully of having access to any number of them! AHHH! Maybe someday but perhaps not yet. Though wouldnt it be fun to whip up a batch of ultra-cold polar molecules while concurrently analyzing your lunches lipid content? Considering one could,in some cases easily be made bald prior to tenure, I suppose life truly isnt a beauty contest,or is it?

Maybe we should also start a TLC thread, while no where near as qualitative as Mass Spec, it does give a decent idea of relative quant. ratios in short order for little money.

I got the impression that the strictures of the MS/GC systems and their on-point accuracy is what got alot of these guys so fired up! They seem VERY enchanted with the I wonder,after all of these years of kind of guessing whats in their vials now that they see the REAL potential in being able to pin-point with almost 100% accuracy their gears potency they now want to get invoved in the game in a whole new way.I have no prob with relative quantities but is it maybe a little too soon? what with those and time of flight?

Hey Walt..did I accidentally somehow run left-of-center of what you were speaking about when You initially engaged me in conversation about TLC Thread and Time of flight report? Ive not gotten an answer,though I really want to jump in..I teach 6 sessions on M,W,F and 4longer ones on T,TH.. They are killing me for time(I DO barely get paid, so I GUESS ITS A JOB) But it sure makes it tough to converse,especially when your Pal is so DANG SMART!!,GOOSE(Curt)

I guess I'm not sure that I'm a fan of labmax testing either. Just look at the number of items that have very similar color and fluorescent characteristics and I'd think it would be fairly easy to find substances that would show positive results.

I have seen discussions about GC/MS testing a few times before on other boards, it is so expensive the cost to operate is sky high. Not mentioning that you need some master degree in Chemistry to run this.

you just need a good eye and some practice, you buy the test kit for $200 and you have 40 test vials, you go to a lab you pay $200 for single test if you are lucky to find one. You get the idea.
I have been using the test kit for some time and it helped me to find really good gear but it took a good few trials and errors to figure it out.

No,Mercury,with all due respect,sir. Although it is ALWAYS best to have a very highly qualified individual to operate the instrument but My degree is in software engineering and I.T.However,during my studies I took,obviously alot of life sciences,chemistry and physics,tons of upper level math.All of that is helpful..why? well you are familiar with the biology,chemistry and of course,the scientific method. But NONE of this matters if one cant Ionize and charge the particles..NONE of the GC/MS process works otherwise,therefore it is a MUST TO HAVE EXTENSIVE TRAINNG ON THE INSTRUMENT(GC/MS INSTRUMENT..THIS IS THE KEY!!! YES THE INSTRUMENT I USE IS PRICEY AS HECK..BUT they dont last much over a fraction of what they did due to constant updating. The throughput at a research facility is like WOW!! The computer guidance advances quickly. The necessary methodologies for IONIZING AND CHARGING IS SOON OUTMODED,Plus it must be put properly into the machine and has much to do with HOW like aerosol in situ operations using MALDI for peptite analysis(to nameone of a zillion!...on and on and on, if your doing BIO as opposed to strict chemical analysis. IM TALKING TOO MUCH..ITS COMPLICATED,YES! But you can isolate and identify EVERYTHING it seems! Just like a fine car..you get what you pay for and it is wise to lease this equipment so your lab/facility can use depreciation to charge-off all of these expenses through modified acellerated cost recovery system(MACRS) DOES IT SEEM IMPORTANT TO ENSURE THAT ONLY WHAT YOU CHOOSE TO BE IN A SAMPLE IS IN THERE? OH HECK YES..Not unlike your 'roids. Actually if your predictions are educated and derived by SERIOUS ESTIMATION,etc at least when your ANAVAR,for example says 97% ..IT IS!!! YEEHAH THE DAYS OF GUESSING ARE AS OVER AS YOU WANT THEM TO BE!!!!!!!

Yes but many of us both teach AND do research and the focus of research is a steady evolving process. True,Mr. Mercury,maybe you can piece your needs out somewhat cheaply. Cool on you if you can But as I indicated large labs MUST own theirs for dedicated,little wait use!!! You are a very intelligent,intuitive man Mr. Mercury but it sure is nice to have fewer waiting the better! try and avoid pre or ++,__charged and or multiple impact cause it beats the instrument up!!! In Situ/exsitu rocks if you can pull it off! These instruments are the best things since sliced bread! AND...your facility can buy a MUCH CHEAPER SYSTEM if needed..CAVEAT EMPTOR!!
