MP's PL Meet Training Log- 3rd Edition

Meet Recap

Today's meet shows you never know what is going to happen at a meet.

First bench attempt was where I had planned and moved quickly and easily. Three whites.

Second bench attempt- for 2 pd. PR came up quickly off the chest then my left thigh cramped and the bar briefly dipped on that side before I was able to correct it. One white, two reds which was the right call for sure.

Third bench attempt- I didn't go to the meet looking for a 2 pd. bench PR and based on how the second moved before the cramping issue I was confident I could hit my pre meet target so I moved up. Got plenty of blue lotion on the thigh between attempts and it was fine. Got a good push off the chest and it moved okay but stopped 3/4's of the way up and I couldn't get it moving again. No lift.

My deadlift PR at the last meet was an all out grind after a good pre meet training cycle. This meet's dead training cycle I had the right knee issue and the best I pulled in training was almost a full 40 pounds short of that number and it was off 2 inch mats.

1st dead attempt- a little under 500. Moved easily but was an ugly stiff legged pull. Three whites.

2nd dead attempt about 30 shy of my PR. Form was better but it moved pretty slow above the knees. No chance at a PR based on this pull. Three whites.

3rd attempt- creeping closer to 575and a 2 pound PR. Best pull of the day by far. Slowed above the knees but wasn't a grind. Three whites. Probably left 10 on the table.

I was sure going into the meet I would PR benching and had little to no chance to PR pulling. Wrong and wrong again.

Thanks for the support throughout the log guys. Taking a brief break from competing to let a number of nagging injuries heal up and will crank it back up after I hit 50.

MP you continue to impress my man. Your entire attitude about the meet, how it didn't go how you wanted, yet you remain positive is impressive. You still did something that most could not and that's stepping on the platform. Get those nagging injuries healed up and I ready for your next ride brother.

I 2nd what Doc said.
Also thanks for allowing us to come on the ride. Ive used you as an inspiration since I got here. Even changed the way I do bench after watching your videos.
You da man MP!

Thanks Doc. I appreciate the continued support.

The two things that upset me performance wise at a meet is doing something stupid causing a miss like jumping a command and poor technique causing a miss.

The reality today was my first two pulls were the only lifts with poor technique and I made both of them.

The cramping issue falls under the shit happens category and I think was likely caused by me focusing on tucking my feet as far back as possible (for me at least) to make sure my butt stayed down.

With a long start command and a relatively long pause being required by the judges today I simply wasn't strong enough to lift the number I called on the final bench attempt. Technique wise that lift was solid.

I always try to look for the positive and from today I know I will top my meet bench PR next time out just like I would have today without the cramp. After my last meet I wasn't convinced I would ever pull a higher number based on the fact it was done with good form and was an all out grind. Granted I only beat it by a few pounds today but I left some on the platform and this dead training cycle was a mess at best.

Thanks for the kind words and continuing support Jay. You are making steady progress in your transition to powerlifting and I have no doubt you will continue to do so.

I agree with Doc, your positive attitude even with adversity is to be admired. I agree the cramp is just one of those things you know "shit happens".
And a big congratulations on the Dead lift PR, very impressive. And i know you will be back stronger than ever for the next one, and you'll get that bench.
Its been very inspirational following you on this journey MP and now you will get some much deserved rest and recovery, so you can get ready for the next one.
Take it easy brother[emoji4]

Congrats on the deadlifts PR MP!

The more and more I watch meets the more I see discrepancies in judging from meet to meet and definitely from Federation to Federation. Is this the same federation you normally compete in?

Thanks for all of the support Mr. B. I plan on getting much more aggressive with my "supplements" prior to my first meet at 50. If I can get healthy and have a good training cycle a top three ranking in the nation should be reachable in both lifts.

No big deal MP...get 'em next time!! You're still and will always be a badass!!

Thanks for checking in throughout the log SD. The last bench yesterday was the only lift I haven't locked out in competition this year. Had one bench red lighted for butt lift in my first meet of the year and the second yesterday for the bar dip before lockout and was 9 for 9 pulling. I was probably due.

No the meet I had planned to compete in just a few miles from home last weekend sold out over two months ago. I had never lifted in this federation. The judging was consistent yesterday but they were definitely taking a long time to give the start command on the bench. Two of the four lifters before me got red lighted on their first attempts for jumping the start command. I thought the pause commands were fair. Some federations seem to be getting a little loose on the pause this one isn't one of them.
