Odie's First Log

A couple pointers on the bench form:

1) Before you had is unracked, your feet and ass should be planted to the bench and not move at all. If your legs move at any point you're not tight enough and you lose leg drive on the bench bc of a weakened kinetic chain. Plant your feet from the jump and they shouldn't move throughout the entire set.

2) once you get your setup down and locked in, have the spotter unrack the bar for you. All you should do is use your lats to pull it above your chest. You shouldn't unrack the bar for max effort or close to max effort bench presses bc you lose your tightness in the upper back.

3) try moving your grip a hair closer, bring the bar down just below the nipples, and don't flare your elbows out so much. Keep them tucked in close to your sides.

Other than that.... FUCK BAD SPOTTERS

Thanks bud, yeah the hardest part with weight like this is getting the shit off the rack. Especially for us shorter guys. I appreciate the advice

Definitely. If you're working with sub maximal loads, like less than 90% of your 1RM, then lifting off on your own isn't so big a deal but when lifting very heavy the movement in your feet and upper body will cause you to leave behind some pounds that could've been lifted.

Notice the two schools of thought on bench pressing . Some say drive with the legs (like I do), others say dont involve the lower body. I always lift my butt off the bench on exertion . Is that wrong ? Says who ?

No shit!! I don't even like unracking 315..

Awesome video, wouldn't surprise me if you're pushing 405 x 10 by the end of this cycle!!

Yeah I will defiantly give it hell and try. I think I will, I was getting 405x8 at the end of my last cycle when I was 222 lbs.( thats my PR ) Thats why I'm taking in a lot of carbs for 5 weeks because I want to fuel myself for some PRs.

Ive always squirmed and lifted my ass up on heavy weight. I do think If I could train myself to correct it that I could lift more.

Leg drive will allow you to lift more weight but not necessarily help you build the target muscles if aesthetics is your primary goal. Lifting your butt off the bench can increase the chances of a spinal injury and it puts you in a mechanically more advantageous position similar to a decline press. It will get you red lights like it did for me if you compete in PLing

Sorry anyone that says don't use leg drive, is again, I'm sorry not educated enough in the bench press to know any better.

And another thing leg drive is as fundamental as is the retracting of the scapula. Bench 135 or 400 plus, u set ur body up accordingly.

Set up is the MOST IMPORTANT aspect when benching, no matter the weight used!!!

I didnt realize it was hard for you guys to unrack the bar. When I unrack my elbows are 1/3 bent. Then I push the bar up about 4 inches just to start.

Looking at your form you are using more of a bodybuilders form. Which is GREAT! You would lift more if you took docs advice tho.

So are you sorta going in the direction of PL or BB? Not that they cant coexist. Or do you just enjoy a big fat PR?

Yeah its a hard on me to get heavy weight off the rack. On decline bench I can't get heavy weight off the rack because it requires I throw my upper body up off the bench to unrack it.

I just lift brother. I did very little PL when I was a kid. Ive always been strong. My grandfather used to yell at me because when I would hook up with a bass I would set the hook so hard I would send the fish out of the water and right on the boat. lol

I like BB but I like pushing for new PRs to. If I had to choose I would choose PLing though, but Im weak in other areas.

Well I pulled/ strained something in the back of my neck doing bent over BB rows. Fuck, I can't even turn my head. I tried to finish my back workout but I figured I better not.

IcyHot and rest. I also take a lacrosse ball to the soft tissue area around whatever is hurting and it tends to make it feel better. Sucks this happens mid blast for you but when life gives you lemons you make some fucking lemonade.

If you take more protein than you need it will not be excreted as waste. There are other metabolic pathways it follows besides being stored as protein.

I am eager to learn more Doc, I must have been mis-informed. Can you please elaborate on this if you don't mind? I am curious as to where the surplus protein goes? Please explain further ?

It really depends on the context but Protein can undergo gluconeogenesis and be converted to glucose to be used as an energy source immediately or stored as glycogen in the muscles and/or liver. The context will determine what ultimately happens to prtoein.

So, I assume it is safe to say that the combo proteins I drink in a day are doing great? I sometimes consume 4 or 5 in a day. Some are whey, some casein, some whey isolate. Sometimes I use double scoops !! Thanks for the reply.

Shit!! That's how you do it. Strong as an ox already. Sky's the limit by the time you're done haha.

Thanks bud. This will be one for the books for sure. I might take a week off or at lest a few days. I strained my neck really bad today.

Also like @brutus79 mentioned the other day. I have been fighting gyno. Ive never had it before but last night and the night before I had to combat it. Seems completely fine today though, but fuck Im only a little over a week in. Luckly I have all pharma grade stuff to fight it
