Please help, ever heard of the Iboga root?

I hope you bros can help me out here. A friend of mine has been given this shit called the Iboga root. It is a root that comes from a bush found in western central Africa. When chewed, it produces sedative effects, incoordination, loss of muscular control, and hallucinogenic effects much like that of LSD. A drug called ibogaine is derived from this root, and is actually a Schedule I contolled substance here, from what I've heard.

I am so afraid my friend is going to hurt himself one day while on this shit. I'm also afraid it is going to cause irreversible brain damage to some degree, such as that of LSD users. I hate it, and I'm trying to get him to stop. If anyone has any other info on this stuff, anything at all, please let me know.

Tell your friend not to fuck with it. I can refer you to a guy who was trying to ween himself off of smack using ibogaine. It keeps you REALLY fucked up for a long long time. didnt sound pleasant at all to me

It's funny to me that so many on this board educate themselves on AS and rail at the public's misperceptions/biases and, yet, they don't bother to educate themselves on other substances and they have the same predjudices that others have regarding AS.

well, large doses of hallucinogens may cause convulsions, ruptured blood vessels in the brain which could lead to irreversible brain damage. but like you said grizz there are alot of misconceptions and unsubstantiated claims. but like anything ... moderation is the key!

Basically, it comes down to personal preference. Hippies don't give a shit about being large and, in theory, big guys don't care bout getting fucked up. Neither party is wrong. It's a matter of priorities.

Interestingly enough, from my research into LSD, there are a hell of a lot less side effects than there is with gear. Keep that in mind.

hey kb ... it seems that there is not alot known about long term eefect of this root. it actually tends to help people get over the ediction of other drugs but it tends to cause halluciginations of it's own. it is said that alot of people consider it a lucky side effect as they kick the habit of using other drugs. well, good luck with your friend.

I did rec drugs including acid back in the day, 20 years ago, and with few exceptions, there are NO sides to most rec drugs....alcohol is one of the major exceptions

One thing you might can start with is finding out what happened that stressed him to the point of seeking relief from a consciencous/ sober mind, that may be stressing over something like bills,divorce,etc. Then go with support for him on those issues from there.

If you take away that damn root, he'll only look for something else to take it's place until he comes to terms with what ever issue{s} he could be hiding from the rest of the world.

Could be something totally diff' going on since I don't know your friend, but one of the things in life that pisses you off more than some, is seeing friends do stuff they shouldn't.

Long term LSD use can cause problems. I have a friend who ate acid all the time and I was with him when he "puddled" about 25 hits into his palm and sucked it down. He has never been the same since. Slower...not "stoner, burn-out" slow, but slower like mildly retarded. Spent 3 days in the ER/psych ward and then gone for a year to a mental hospital.

Also if you read Electric Cool-aid Acid test by Tom Wolf (which is an Essay/non-fiction) there is a story about a woman who jumped on board with the Merry Pranksters and after about a week went "stark raving mad" and wound up institutionalized. From eating benzedrine and drinking OJ with huge doses of acid.

Hell, I'm afraid to even count how many times I've tripped, but I truly believe that you run the risk of fucking yourself up permantly if you gulp down huge doses.

Freak, actually the reason he first tried it was because he was simply influenced to try it by someone else. He has no problems in life or anything, it was just pretty much "here try this stuff, you'll like it"... you know, peer-pressure.
