It's BS anyway. Outside of a few outlier examples, there are million ways to dispense with medical debt, the costs are all placed on those covered by insurance.
Ask yourself this. A birth costs approximately $20,000 when billed to insurance.
Do you think the millions of uninsured illegal aliens in the US who have babies each year are bringing in a sack of cash to pay for that? Or being turned away and having babies on the side of the road? If the newborn has a heart defect requiring a million dollar treatment, guess what, they're getting it no matter what. Is the landscaper with a broken leg and no money hobbling around crippled from it being unset?
The "lose everything" fables are what politicians tell their constituents to make them feel better about a nine month wait to see a specialist for their intractable pain "for free", while they see a private doc within a week.
Private insurance, medicare, medicaid, chip, the number of uncovered citizens is in the low single digits and even they have options.
