Recently got into it with a buddy, he told me that I have it easy, that it's much easier going up then it is going down.
Well let me tell you, starting at a scrawny 130lbs 6ft when I first started training 8years ago that it has been hell of a climb so I can sit at 220 at 6'3.
Help me settle this debate, what is easier to do, Gaining mass or losing mass?

"For those of you who are really anal (aka half of Meso) the question is, is it easier to go from being fat to muscular, or skinny to muscular. Which route is more difficult when it comes to packing in muscle mass?"

I think it’s more difficult to add and maintain quality muscle then to lose weight (fat).
Seems like a no brainer to me.

It depends on your metabolism. If you have a fast metabolism gaining will be harder and cutting will be easier.

It’s also much cheaper to cut/lose fat.
Eat less and add cardio which could even be running or biking. To add and maintain quality muscle you need lots of food, protein, gym membership.

I wouldnt say its cheaper. Usually healthy food is more expensive, and you need more drugs to lose bodyfat.

Age is a cop out! Its a genetics thing!!
I’ll be 45 next week and can eat anything I want. I’m in the best shape of my life! :)

I'm already 45, and the strongest I've ever been :p I can't eat anything I want to though, otherwise I break through 310#s, which appears to be my genetic limit before everything goes slomo.

Hardest - add muscle mass (once past noob gains) - obviously, or we'd all look more like Ronnie than we do

Medium difficulty - lose fat without losing muscle, get down to 10% (I'm not going to comment on how hard it is to get down to 5-ish % competition level because I haven't done it - maybe that's the hardest of all)

Easiest - gain any weight - just let it go. Supersize me.

Harder to gain imo. Eating enough is tough business. To lose you just gotta exercise and the eating isn't an issue. Yes you'll crave but it's easier than shoveling food in your mouth when you don't even wanna look at another bite.

I hate bulking and I suck at it. Stuffing food down your throat while you are full sucks. I can cut up with ease.

It's also hard for me to balance a caloric surplus and not put on to much fat. I like staying lean so the fat bothers me.

Also an age thing. I used to be able to shovel in burgers and fries without gaining any fat. Now I look at a fucking fast food ad on the telly and my waist expands :(

Funny thing, I just told a buddy yesterday that 25 years ago I could eat a pizza and then play football 30 minutes later.

Now if I over eat I'm laid up with bubble guts for 2 days.

I agree, age will make it harder but it has become a cop out in a big way.

When I look back at my life what happened was priorities changed. No excuse, I let it happen.

Kids, wife, life...for me it took my time but then again with better time management I could have avoided a lot of it.

Or I could have pulled out

Anyone can bulk up all you got to do is lift heavy and eat a lot. Not everyone can cut up though.
