Who here rides motorcycles?

Appreciate the suggestion, definitely going to check it out!! Yea you can’t beat the weather up there rt now, it’s gorgeous!
Here’s a video of the ride.
This guy gives a very good description because he’s talking though most of the ride.
He’s heading up the mountains so the second half is where the road opens up to two lanes (4) and you start to get some great views off the mountains as well. I like running it the other way (down) for the views myself but you can get in over your head quick running over 100 mph in curves downhill so up is a safer option.

Oh that’s up by Brown Mountain, my son and I rode dirtbikes up there at Brown Mountain, very nice place! Not sure if you’re into stream fishing or not, but Wilson creek is an amazing place to visit, rt next to Brown mtn, we nail the stream trout there!

First off, for all of the pervs out there, I will be talking about naked sport bikes, not naked ladies.

@Demondosage have you checked out any naked bikes for your son? They are very much like your typical sport bike / rocket. But they ride more like a dirt bike. My brother, uncle and cousins all ride dirt bikes and we all have naked bikes. You sit more upright and your feet aren’t as far back on the rear sets. They actually have handlebars and not clipons like rockets. They are really exploding right now in polularity.

The Yamaha MT07, MT09 & MT10 will all perform similarly to a standard sport bike with more upright ergonomics. Sport bike in line engines.

The KTM Duke lineup is really great for people that come from dirt bikes to the street. They are Vtwin engines that make their power low to mid rpm. Only rev out to 11k. Really fun bikes. They make usable power low to mid so you don’t need to ride balls out to be in a typical sport bike power band. Try checking these out for your son. They make all different sizes. From a 390 all the way up to the 1390 SuperDuke R. A 790 or 990 would honestly be a great bike that your son would be able to learn on and still have fun on for years.

Almost all of the major players are making nakeds now, I just listed the the 2 I think are the top dogs.

Anyway, have fun and ride safe! It would be really awesome to be able to ride with my dad. Something your son will remember forever.

I agree with you 100% on this, unfortunately I have a son that wants to be the cool kid with the race bike. My wife is like “just get him what he wants, I’ll never forget how bad I wanted that Geo tracker when I was a teenager and my dad made me settle on a damn prism!!”

Yeah, I guess I never listened to my dad either. Wish I would have a little bit more when I was younger. Everyday I figure out that he was more right than I thought.

So much of young kids wants are based on what other people think is cool. I was there, I get it. I’ve had many sport bikes and I wish they had naked bikes when I started riding. These things are the best of both worlds. Even at 18 I’d have to convince myself that the 600cc sport bike was moderately comfortable. Cool, yes 100%. I get so many compliments on my naked bike from young and old. I can also keep up with almost anything in the road.

Have you and your son decided what bike he’s getting?

He wants a cbr600 or 600rr. At first I was looking at an R3 or ninja 400 but he would probably get bored of those within the first week. He says he doesn’t want a parallel twin engine, wants the inline 4. But the thing is he’s never ridden sport bikes, only dirtbikes. I’m afraid he’s going to get out there on an afternoon ride and hate the riding position a dedicated race bike puts him in.

Honestly a ninja 650 would be a slightly more upright riding position and still quick enough, but not an inline 4 engine. I think I’m going to tell him that I came across a good deal on something and try to persuade him to go with a slightly more comfortable bike to ride

That was my first road bike! 2004 CBR600RR!!
The scary thing about the true sport bikes is that you really need to rev the hell out of them to make power. Being a new rider, he would benefit from something with usable power that can still go fast. Sport bikes hate low to mid rpm and are really meant for the track or doing felony speeds on the highway. Not too much in between there. Every time I had the sport bike out I was hitting low/mid triple digits on my 600. My naked will do 160mph just fine but it also doesn’t hate tooling around town. Rode for 5 hours with no noticeable discomfort.

There is a happy medium somewhere for you and your son. Either way he’ll be on 2 wheels. Not too many 16 year olds can say they have a street bike. It’ll be cool no matter what. Good luck with your search. If you remember, let me know what you end up with. I love hearing about people getting into street bikes and what they chose to ride.

I really appreciate this response and perspective on power versus usable power, EXCELLENT POINT! I had actually not thought of this until you mentioned it. Most of those bikes don’t kick on till about 8,000+ rpm range when you’re going over 100mph and that’s not what I want for him. I’d rather have him be able to actually learn how to ride rather than simply “not crash.”

I've got a Victory Cross Country that I've ridden all of over the mountains of Colorado, to the Mexico/Texas border, and everywhere in between. Eventually I'll make it the east coast and up into Canada.

I'd recommend a riding school for both you and your son. Even if you grew up on dirt, bigger road bikes are a slightly different animal. You can probably get by, but you'll learn things in a riding school that will make your life easier and riding more fun.

I lost my brother to a motorcycle crash. And I've been through a few, one that was pretty scary. And I still ride. If you're sure your son is going to do it no matter what, set him up for success.

Good luck!

For sure man! I agree with this and I looked at one class that’s abt $2600, Yamaha ride like a champion school, a life and safety is worth the 2600$ to me! And yea, I’m doing abt a 5,000 mile round trip journey from east coast out to the Grand Canyon and back in April myself, can’t wait!

Ok, after researching many bikes I’ve decided that I’ll most likely look into picking up my son a CBR650r or a 650F.

The mid weight sport bikes are a good balance of speed to comfort but more linear power than a 600 race bike, slightly less chance of an accidental stupid throttle twist and the bike flying out from under him.

Anything 500cc and under sport bike wise he’s going to probably be bored of within a week, I feel like the 650’s are a good compromise and it’s a bike he can grow into with power on demand if he wants to punch it. The CBR 650 still keeps the inline 4 engine and sounds sick, kid is dead set on that inline 4 engine. I still prefer parallel twins myself, and the parallels seem to have a lot more low end grunt. But yea, I remember being a kid and wanting what you want. We went a few dealerships and he sat on some race bikes and he even admitted it wouldn’t be comfortable after an hour of riding. Good, that was what I was trying to get him to understand! So now that that’s out of the way…..

If you are going to sign him up for a track school, then getting him a sport bike shouldn’t be an issue. I wouldn’t be worried about the riding position being too aggressive especially for a teenager or young adult.

I did amateur racing on 600cc supersports for years. I have ridden on basically every track on the west coast. I have also attended multiple sport bike racing schools. I got to the point that I actually quit riding on the street.

My street bikes that I did own have ranged from a SV 650, multiple 600 cc super sports, multiple Ninja 636 ccs, a Gsxr 750 ccs, and a couple 1000 cc sport bikes. I have owned a lot of motorcycles.

If your son is coming from a solid foundation in riding dirt bikes, by all means, get him a 600cc super sport. Their power is in the higher RPM bands so you have to wring them out to make them GO. If he has some restraint he’ll be more than fine.

If you’re dead set on putting him on something with a more upright riding position, look into the Triumph Street Triple. They are reliable and resale well. Look for a used one if you don’t want to pay the new tax. Best naked I’ve ever riden.

I completely agree with this. I’ve been on almost every track on the east coast. Really miss that lifestyle.

@Demondosage If your son is set on a super sport no other bike is going to be what he wants. The riding style might seem uncomfortable to some but you get used to it.
In addition to racing and owning many super sport bikes since 1993 I’ve ridden from New Hampshire to TN, SC and FL and back many times on a few different R6’s with rear sets and lowered clipons which is a more aggressive riding style than stock. You can sit up almost straight on a super sport when just cruising by turning your body slightly to the left and placing your left hand on your quad.
The gearing is an absolute non issue but for more aggressive low speed and stunt riding on a few of my street bikes my regular gearing change was one down in the front and 3 up on the rear sprocket. Completely changes how the gearing feels. But a regular super sport is fine around town even stock.

As a father I can understand not wanting to put him on a supersport for safety and not wanting him to get hurt by having all that speed but the upright riding style and gearing won’t matter to him or be the big deal it might seem if he really wants a super sport.
