Why are Foxx autofils so cheap at MLgear?

They actually work depending on your set-up, and yes... they have a separate supplied nipple/attachment for any standard vacuum pump, etc... HOWEVER, there are 3 different Tiers/levels of these filters....I've only seen the lower grade/standard PES filters offered on MED Lab's website... could be wrong though... I would only use the middle or top tear grade they offer = "SS" or higher as the filter membrane @ 22um is a better quality material for filtering purposes...., etc... Simply look on Amazon, or their website directly for more info., etc... But yes, they work just fine.... Just need to tinker w/ them a bit... especially if you're using your own glass 45mm top glass media bottles, etc.... Example: you may need to double up on there supplied O-Rings in order to create a proper % suction seal from their filter top to your glass media bottle.... Trial and error my friend w/ all units, etc... But yes... they do work...:)

Have you used Autofils yourself?
How do you compare them to Zapcaps?
Both quality AND PRICE comparison please (Autofils are cheaper than Whatmans)

Yes, I've used both... w/ most recently using the Autofils w/ great success, especially for the price...;) I believe I was able to get 12 complete "sterile 250ml set-ups w/ media bottles" for less than $60...*NOTE: I only use Glass Media Bottles because evevy plastic media bottle will always crack even when only applying about 10psi of suction... Then you're screwed...lol However, having additional sterilized plastic media bottles on hand w/ caps can always come in handy for short term storage and emergencies, etc...:)

Yes, I've used the Whatman Zapcap CR's b-4, and they do seem to have a slightly faster and more consistent flowing rate while filtering out gear... However, I wasn't too impressed for the following reasons:
1.) The CR models are not Sterile out of the box....when compared to the Autofils and many other brands on the market....
2.) Zapcap filters are not threaded to fit any media bottles, etc... Instead, they work by attaching via suction basis to the top of the media bottle itself.... twas kinda left scratching my head w/ that one too... as if you lose suction and something topples over, you're toast....
3.) They are also nearly double the price when compared to various other brands on the market today....

It all depends on whether you believe and/or feel that Nylon based membranes via the filters are better than Poly/PES filters, etc....blah...blah...blah...

Yes, I've also purchased and used just about every other brand and/or variation out there: Nagalene, Milipore, Corning.... Yes, the Autofils for the price alone will definitely do the job just fine....:) Albeit a bit more costly, I also had great success w/ the Sterile Nagalene Rapid Flow Series.... The Milipore bottle top filters gave me the biggest fits as several of the filters simply broke and cracked w/ minimal PSI Suction being applied... I'm sure many other will chime in here w/ there own experiences as well....:)

I just read that right? Between a zapcap and the media bottle there must be a seal otherwise no flow? Even though there are no threads or anything? They just kind of sit on top of my media bottles...

Maybe thats why i had flow problemas all along?

Great post

What kind of glass bottles do you use?
Do you know the neck size and type required?
Are necks threaded?

Yes.... just sits on top of said media bottle w/ the suction actually creating the seal...

I fought that shit for hours. Have a thread in homebrew about it. Fml. I feel like such an idiot right now. I had no idea i needed a seal between the filet and bottle. Should i wet the rim of the bottle with a little carrier oil to help?

Great post

1.) I only use Hybex glass media bottles, however there are other manufacturers as well.... I know the Hybex bottles are made of thick Borosilicate Glass
and as sturdy as they come..... You can properly wash, clean, pre-sterilize w/ alcohol and distilled h20 mix, and throw them in the oven for a few hours w/ your 10ml glass vials "pre-prepped the same way" for a few hours for final sterilization while preparing and making your brews b-4 filtering, etc.... They can all be easily be located/found via MedLabSupply site, or by searching Amazon and/or internet, etc...They're not cheap, but well worth the investment... I believe most glass media bottles come in the following sizes: 100ml, 150ml, 250ml, 500ml and I'm sure even larger....
2.) Generally speaking, Glass media bottles have two different neck sizes "Width," etc...: 33mm and 45mm. Yes, they are all threaded.... ALWAYS go w/ the 45mm as it's wider and simply provides a wider neck which provides a wider area to screw your botlle-top filters to... Thus making the overall set-up sturdier @ the bottom/base, and less likely to tip over during the filtering process, eh?...:) ***NOTE: Most bottle top filters are available in both the 33mm and 45mm neck sizes... make sure you are ordering & verifying the correct one that matches the "Width Neck Size" of your glass media bottles, etc... ****
3.) Lastly... and as previously mentioned, there are several bottle-top filters available, period.... While the actual "filter membrane composite type" is debatable, always make sure you're using .22um pore size vs. .45um pore size....

Does mct run ok through pes?

Yes... MCT is primarily used and has become popular over the last several years mainly because it's considerably thinner than GSO and/or CSO for example... Thus also making it flow through and filter faster too...:)

I know i will catch hell...but i brew with miglyol 840. Love that stuff.

I've Never tried it? ....Hey, if it works for you...I say go for it...:) I just know my body has bad reactions to & suffers bad break-outs w/ acne when using certain carrier oils & other additives like EO... I guess that's why I simply began brewing my own gear...I know what's in it, and what works for me....;) Basically, I only use GSO and/or MCT via carrier oils.... My body agrees w/ both... & that's all that matters... What ever works for you....

This thread is exactly whay I was looking for.
I read mixed concerns regarding using PES membranes because of the BA melting them. Some are making it seem like they are to be avoided like the plague.
I wonder if it's safe to use for a 100mg/ml NPP 2%BA 15-20%BB in MCT oil

IMO no big deal with BA less or equal than 2%
@XKawN says 1% BA is enough

For safety, ALWAYS discard filters after half their rated capacity was used
i.e. discard a 1000ml filter after 500 ml
