WSMWANNABE's path to (not) becoming a pro strongman

Shuttle runs are necessary for slow strongmen. I am strong enough to be moderately competitive in any amateur show at this point, to include nationals. What is holding me back right now is my lack of explosiveness.

In the middle weight class, speed/explosiveness is what really sets apart the good from the great.

I'll never be FAST in the traditional sense, but I can improve a lot at the strength-speed and speed-strength components of strongman.
If you have access to a yoke, I found incorporating 2-3 runs of just 250-300lbs for 60-80ft with like 90 seconds rest once a week greatly increased my moving during loading of all kinds. Also pushed my conditioning to a good level.

I usually dedicate an entire day just to movement events and conditioning in-between my push/pull split

I have done quite a bit of yoke work at low weight and high weight, and lots of speed work. This has helped me some, but as I am working more on moving around, I realized how immobile I was. Sprinting has actually helped loosen my hips a lot, and the combination of jumping and sprinting made me much more spry (this is all with only 3 weeks of work with sprinting and jumping). I almost feel like I am 23 again (I am 33 now). My hips tightened up a lot especially in the last 2.5 years since I am working a desk job now, and I have learned mobility/agility is very much "use it or lose it".

My conditioning is always hit and miss due to my asthma. It could always be better but I certainly have no problem competing for 60s at a time.

6/11/21 BW: 245.8

1) vertical jump to broad jump
4x2

2) 1/2 gasser
50' down and back x5. rest 90s and repeat 3x total

3) SSB box squat, beltless/sleeveless
1x6 @ 325 (RPE 6, I was supposed to go up to 1x6 @ RPE 7 but torching my fast twitch muscles with all of the running and jumping made it difficult for me to comfortably push the weight much higher)
1x6 @ 295
3x6 @ 265

4) BSS machine
4x8 each leg 45 lbs per hand

5) back attack
3x15 @ 90 lbs

6) reverse hyper

I have an albuterol inhaler that I use before/during/after (as needed really) and sometimes it helps but most times it doesn't help all that much. After doing a bit of reading and research, I think I have eosinophilic asthma, which an albuterol inhaler doesn't really help with all that much. And there are some days that my asthma is better/worse than others. With the good and bad days being so random, I am having a hard time really figuring out what triggers a good or bad day.

I have asthma as well.
When I'm doing hard cardio or a high intensity weight day (Without breaks... non PL day) I'll pop 2mg Albuterol
I find the inhaler only gives momentary relief, wheras Albuterol will keep me pushing through my workout without any issues.
Shit is dirt cheap too... like 7 bucks a pack lol

6/12/21 BW: 245.4

1a) Log strict press from rack (beltless but w/sleeves, wraps)
2x2 @ 235 (I was supposed to hit a top triple at RPE 7 but my low back kept giving out on me after the second rep on each set, and I believe it was from squats on the previous day. I have talked to my coach about switching my upper and lower body days back to how they were previously so that I take a day off after lower body days. The first rep of the first set flew up at 235, I think I might have been able to push it higher than this... o well I'll find out another day)
1x3 @ 205
1x3 @ 195

1b) cable face pull
3x20

2) machine chest press
4x12 @ 140

3) T bar row w/ high elbows
3x12 @ 135

4) Weighted side plank
4x30s w/ 25 lbs

5) BFR bicep curls
2.5 lb dumbbells 30, 15, 15, 15 reps

6) BFR tricep rope pushdowns
20 lbs 30, 15, 15, 15 reps

My doc just gives me an inhaler for when I have a asthma attack.
I think it's important to mention that I just dont get asthma attacks anymore... ever.
Just time where my breathing is more difficult due to allergies etc.

But Albuterol is great for a big cardio session, it's also been proven to help maintain muscle/strength during a deficit.

I use it for probably 2ish months a year (Not consecutively) for a big cut... which usually involves a hard cardio push

I also find ladder drills helped me a lot with my mobility and loosening up. I've got pretty trash knees from genetics and being a tradesman. I can relate to the stiffness, I'm only a couple years younger

I hear ya there brother. I’m only 33, but I spent 4 years in the USMC in a combat arms MOS. I was an HVAC tech for 3 years. Several other manual labor jobs. Only recently did I get away from that. You lose your mobility so slowly that you don’t notice it leaving until it’s too late

Still the qualifiers isnt it.

Good to see Shaw was winning his group last time I checked.
Hes getting old, but you arent a 4x WSM unless you have some Sauce in the tank still
Yes, the competitors are qualifying for the finals right now. I really like Kevin Faires, he isn't well known compared to most of the others, but I have talked to him a handful of times and he seems to really be a standup guy. And I am partial because he started as an 105k guy and once he got his pro card he decided to just go get bigger and stronger. He is usually the lightest guy at WSM.

Unfortunately the details of the competition are very sparse right now. I think WSM/CBS is trying to keep everything under wraps until they air it months from now

Yeah, I was surprised when I saw Faires at the top of his group
Going to be a fight in that group for sure.

As you know everything is in the air with WSM, depending on the competitions, could be a strength year and Shaw could do well... or even with a good balancd.
You start getting into mobility and speed, guys like Faires and Maxime (Gotta rep the Canadian boys) whose IMO agile for his size.....are going to start scoring crazy well.

That's a great thing about Strongman and PL, the top guys are extremely accessible to the other guys in the sport.
Due to the lack of popularity and massive pqssion these guys have for the sports I guess lmao.
