Strength Training Thread

Nice posts a page back, out of all the programs listed I am biggest fan of 5/3/1 and Mike T's. I have the westside barbell book of methods, it looks good but I haven't read all yet. Russian Conjugate is another good method, but I think it is only really beneficial for advanced athletes. Bulgarian method is another good one. Personally what made biggest impact on my own training is the explanation of Brandon Lilly and Mike Tuchscherer on the importance of volume even in strength. As long as there is no category for which you have to keep weight from gaining, more weight (read muscle) is gonna be beneficial. Of course it is all up to person, most powerlifters I know rarely max out, instead using other means like speed (lil break inbetween not 1 rm singles in my case) and control (paused reps are the best in my opinion). Paused deadlifts as per Jonnie Candito and Mike T have become staple in my workouts. Using principles of different programs is a good overall approach especially for checking which works best etc. I know people who benefit from band usage but never do deficit or rack pulls and others completely other way around. Also there is people (Lilliebridge) using low frequency and people (Tuchscherer) using high frequency, many approaches could prove useful just have to find which, all about practice really

What do you think of the cube method Docd187123.Im on the fence with texas method and the cube method.

The Cube Method is a pretty good program. Not the best IMO but a good one nonetheless.

My main critiques with the Cube Method would be:

1) the average intensities used is pretty low and you work with 90%+ I think once in 9 or 10wks. Strength can be built with lower intensities and higher volume to make up for it but trainin with heavy loads teaches you many things. It's better to watch form breakdowns for one thing but also it more effectively targets the neural system.

2) each powerlift is done once a week. This is not optimal IMO. Technical mastery comes from repition and the best way to get that is to bench and squat or do variants multiple times a week and deads as often as you can. My squat form is better than any other lift bc I used to squat 3-4x a week EVERY WEEK for years.

I do know a few guys who ran it and loved it. I even printed out the ebook and read it through but it's not something I would run for myself. I need to be able to squat more often than that.

You know I did sense that the cube creator does take after programing from Jim W.I allways thought programing such as 5/3/1 is best for me to keep for my down times basically in life.Work, hectic scheuldules=stress.

The texas method might be better for me at the moment as I will be blasting about 3 months coming up.Tm looks like it can become aggressive if you actually hit new pr's each intensity day carrying over to volume day each week when adjusted accordingly.Squat and bench I have to do at least two or three times a week for my goals right now. Thanks for the feedback.

You're welcome.

In TM, the 5x5 volume days are what drives progress. Bc of this day, and the resulting recovery between then and intensity day, you should be hitting a new max/PR every intensity day. But not only that, the 5x5 days will start to become PRs in their own right.

Squats will be done 2-3x a week here, front squats are an alternative option bc if the different stress they place.

I love TM and made fantastic progress as a natty with it. I've never have anything bad to say about it and will always recommend it to people.
