@MairUnderwood(Researcher) has a new article exclusively for MESO-Rx readers. She shares her research working with online bodybuilding communities. She discusses the differences in how bodybuilders and doctors see "bigorexia" / "muscle dysmorphia". Do you think you have it?

I am an anthropologist who has been working in online bodybuilding communities, particularly enhancement communities, for the last 4 years. In this paper, and the next, I want to tell you what I have learnt from bodybuilders about muscle dysmorphia, and compare that to how muscle dysmorphia is described in the medical literature. My aim is to increase understanding within both bodybuilding and scientific communities, but most importantly I want to build understanding between them.

Uglyorexia : ugly girls that feel bad because they re not hot. Pointing out this is fuckin cynical and disrespectful, exactly like that bodybuilding related one. Those bored and boring skinny faggot “scientists” just dont have better stuff to do.

They dont have better stuff to do so they try to diagnose “mental illness” and tryna feel smarter doing that.

i m very into bodybuilding and would love to be special and have a damn super hero body.

but in all honesty, if i was a millionaire i would resize everything to get the most out of my life while taking care of my body.

i would train less, and avoid harsh compounds. And probably i would have a huge home gym with victoria secret models as spotters, that i would fuck after training.

and they should spot my bench in topless, and every rep, after the concentric i would do a isometric one while sucking their nipples, meanwhile another one should twerk and suck on my dick

I would love getting a blowjob while doing biceps curls, delts, and so on.

I said i would have fucked them after workout, it was a lie.

bigorexia my ass, those loser scientists could hang themselves

I agree that 'everything is not a syndrome'. That being said...yes, most of us have it.

I really thought this would focus on people sacrificing their health for looks. I get why people would consider that a problem but it seems like it was all about guys wanting to get bigger. You keep moving the goal post it said, well no shit. I keep trying to get more money too, if I'm getting a bj I'll see if I can get deep throat. It doesn't seem like guys are nearly as into size as they use to be either, being shredded seems to be as important to most guys now.

if you fuck a hottie you wanna have a threesome with her and her hot gf... then quadsome.. then you wanna be a sultan and have a harem to get into a reverse gang bang

I admit I have bigorexia. I love the way I look at 230lb of lean muscle versus 185lb of lean tight muscle. I hate to acknowledge it but even most everyone else treats me better when I'm big and muscled. Kids always come up to talk to me asking me if I compete or much I bench. Women and girls occasionally ask to feel my biceps. Some have gotten carried away at times and just come up to me and start grabbing my pecs. And they don't know me from Adam. That's one double standard I don't like. I mean, to reverse the situation, if I go up to a woman I don't know and grab her breasts I'm going to spend the night in jail.

Yeah that double standard was so awful, I'd always have to go find a safe space after a strange woman would grab my arm and tell me to flex. GTFO with that, you love it

I'm not going to bash this read, it's true to a very large degree and I know this is someone who actually took the time to talk to ppl and get real insight from bodybuilders.

I was obsessed with size at one time and I'll admit, shit started happening based on some childhood events like getting jumped by a group of guys, never feeling as though I fit in, never doing well in team sports. I was that guy that was building muscle thinking, "I'm gonna show all those motherfuckers whats up!"

Now, I'm better now...MUCH!! I bodybuild for me, and I don't care what ppl think abt what I'm doing or hearing all the nonsense abt "you used to be bigger, you look like you are thinning out..blah blah blah"

The general public that doesn't know what this takes, their opinions rarely mean shit to me, so it's no longer for them because many don't understand what they're looking at. Hell, you could look at an Olympia competitor in a hoodie near Showtime and think they're "thinning out" till that damn shirt comes off, then it's like GAAAAWD DAAAAAMN!!!"

But getting back to this topic, basically took self development away from the gym to not obsess over it as bad. Without any other accomplishments in life chances are you just won't break away from it.

NOW, ONTO THE POSITIVES. My physique built confidence, it landed smoking hot women, it brought respect from ppl. It took someone who never felt like he fit in to someone who felt incredible when he wondered out or was in the clubs back on the day!

It doesn't always work in the order of character development developing the physique, sometimes the physique can help develop the character too! Without bodybuilding on my side I would probably have some fat wife, work a job I hated to come home and drink myself to sleep, and look on the mirror and think "wtf happened to me? I'm a fat shit that has no energy, no positive outlook, no sex drive, and on rare occasion when my dick is hard THAT HOG OVER THERE IS WHAT I HAVE TO STICK IT IN!!!?

YO....FUCK THAT!!!

That's preference. It's very normal to engage in behavior that is socially-rewarded. That's not bigorexia.

another disease its Moronrexia.. that affects “scientists” that need to categorize every human behavior into “disease”

another one is Fuckinkiddosoverpopulationrexia, affects humans that wanna keep popping out children because they have that fuckin irrational instinct to crank out thousands of babies... thanks even to that people this world is fucked...
Agent Smith was right... humans are fuckin viruses

They re nobody to establish what is dysmorphia etc

There is a fair amount of criticism of the American Psychiatric Association for the tendency to seemingly psychopathologize everything. The more "disorders" that can be diagnosed, the more money they can bill insurance for.

And some notable psychiatrists seem like they want to diagnose all bodybuilders with muscle dysmorphia. But there is actually only a small percentage of bodybuilders who truly meet the criteria for clinically significant muscle dysmorphia.

The key criteria that most bodybuilders fail to meet is that of clinically significant distress or impairment. Is bodybuilding destroying your life?

The answer for the vast majority of bodybuilders is a resounding 'no'. Instead, the opposite is true. Their lives are enriched and enhanced.

Of course, everyone may have symptoms of body dissatisfaction just like everyone may experience sadness. Body dissatisfaction doesn't mean someone has muscle dysmorphia any more that being sad means someone is clinically depressed.
