ok, got a dvd burner yesterday. went to put it in my cpu and not sure where to plug it in(fuck you dolfe ;) ). I only had a cdrom. the slot that the cdrom is plugged into is the only one on my cpu that will fit my dvd rom. Do i have to buy a splitter? also, cant find where to plug in the little 4 pin power supply deal. It is different than the powersupply cord that my cdrom uses.
Isnt all of this shit compatible or did i need to check on compatability? should i unplug my cdrom, use the cd roms powersupply for my dvd burner etc?

i thought every pc has room for 2 cd/dvd drives these days, there should be two connectors on that ribbon cable(IDE) to plug into your drives, you plug one cooector in the first drive and the other connector on the ribbon on the other drive.

Just make sure you're computer is off while you're plugging in shit. Partition magic fucked my computer up so bad I had to borrow a neighbors HD. I kept switching them back and forth as master and slave. I had it turned off the first few times and got tired of doing that after a while. One time while plugging a HD in it made a big blue spark and my comp shut off. It wouldn't turn back on and I thought it was a goner. I waited a min or two and reset the surge protector and finally it went back on. I thought I blew out the power source for a while. Finally fixed it back up. My goal was to upgrade from win 98 to xp pro. Well guess what HP pavilions are set up to only take the software that comes with one. To install xp on an oler pavilion my friend had to buy a new HD and change pin settings on the mother board. Anybody run into this problem?

well assuming you dont have one of those emachines or little mini PCs, you should have at least two CD rom bays. Concernin the IDE ribbon cable, if it doesnt have two plugs on it, one should be a master and one should be a slave, then you need to buy yourself one @ Best buy. I am surprised that the cable that came with the DVD burner doesn't have 2 IDE slots on it.. When you do get the cable, unplug the other one completely from the computer and then plug the new one into the exact same spot on the motherboard and then the top plug into the DVD burner and the second plug into the older CD rom drive. You also have to set the jumpers in the back of each drive. Make the DVD your master and the CD rom yuor slave.
Every device should use the same power supply. If it doesnt i dont know what to tell you. I've never seen it otherwise before. It should be 4 wires, i think. Red on the inside and yellow on the outside. Black in the middle.

ok, this master slave shit is humorous. The ribbon on my old cdrom and new dvdrom both have to female ends. One is close to the drive and one is at the end. I just figured they were used to reach a long plug in.

So i plugged my dvdburner into the slot on the motherboard that the old cdrom was plugged into. this is correct? Than the shorter plug on the ribbon will go into the back of the cdrom? so i wont use the cdrom ribbon at all?
as for power, the other cable that came with the dvd rom is just a small 4 pin deal. Doesnt look anything like the power cable that comes out of the old cdrom. The dvdrom has a couple of extra slots on the back to plug shit into. Can i plug one of the powersupply females into the back of the dvd or is the little 4 pin deal my powersupply? I only found one place that would let me plug the little 4 pin deal and that was on the motherboard towards the back of the tower.

Hey bro....... Yes, that little four pin cable on your DVD burner is your power supply... If the old cd-rom has a different one, it must be pretty old!!! If the power cable fits into the slot at the back of the motherboard without forcing it too much, try it. That's the only way you'll find out. There is no power originating from the cord, so you won't be sending a power surge to the box. If all else fails, you can go to Alltex or Sam's Wholesale, and buy you an external USB case for the DVD for about $35. I have one myself, they are quite nice. Anyway, good luck with it bro...

Shit, you know I was lmao as soon as I saw the title to this thread, as far as the answer to your question goes,,,ok did you really think I had an answer. :D

i knew you had nothing to offer.

Well my cpu is not old at all. I just built it last fall. The little 4 pin deal doesnt look anything like my powersupply cords. The power supply cords that come out of the case arent anything like this little 4 pin deal. The 4 pin deal is smaller and black. The cdrom drive was brand new in november of last year. Can i unplug the powersupply from it and use it on the dvd drive? I know whatever i plugged the lil 4 pin thing in was wrong b/c i turned on my cpu and the dvd part had no power????????????

the little little plug is for sound, and depending if you have onboard sound on your motherboard, or if you have a separate sound card, you would plug it into one of those.
since it fit somewhere on your board, i would say that is where it goes.

the 4 pin plug with the yellow, black, black, red wires is for power. all power cables look the same. there should be at least 5 or 6 power cables floatin around the computer.

here are some pics that might help

ok, the ide cable i have. So the ide goes from new dvd to motherboard. Than the other part will plug into the cdrom?

the 4 pin must be sound. It doesnt have the colors and shit. WOuld my dvd drive come w/o power than? or will the extra females power slots plug into the back of my dvd?
the cd rom came with a cord that connected it to the powersupply. my dvd burner doesnt have that. Can i use the cdrom one?

also, is that the correct order with the ide or does it not matter? So the 1 free end goes to motherboard and the two closer together ends go to master(back of dvd) and slave(back of old cdrom)?

you pretty much have it

small cable= sound

yes you can use the power supply from the old cd rom for the new one, and also any loose ones. they all have the same power.

for the IDE, the 1 free to motherboard, and then for the other 2 i would put the top one as DVD and thats master, and the 2nd one as CD rom and thats slave.

Make sure you set the jumpers, and then plug the computer back in and power up.

When the first screen comes up on your computer at start up, it is going through all the diagnostic shit. You should see it say Primary IDE, and then list your hard drive(s), and then Secondary IDE and list Master DVD Rom and Slave CD rom

There's 3 cables:

- power (4 wires) (chunky)
- data (many wires ribbon cable)
- sound (2 wires)

There's room for 4 things on the data cable including hard drives and usually plenty for power.

well it is weird b/c there is an extra slot to plug in the ide beside where the cdrom is plugged into but the slot is just barely to narrow to accept the cdrom or dvd ide. I will f'k with it tonight and hopefully get it. not sure about the jumping thing either

[how do u set your jumpers? what are jumpers?

jumpers are little black pieces on the back of the CD Rom......there should be a sticker on the CD rom that explains what the Master, Slave, etc.
