I just bought a 2001 Camry 4 cylinder 5 speed manual with EXTREMELY low miles. I absolutely love this car. Best car I have ever owned.

Anyhow, I propose 2 different scenarios. Which of these do you feel would be best for my engine (which will make my Camry's engine last until 250,000 miles??)??

Change the oil every 3,000 miles with Conventional Mobil 10W-30
................

Or

Change the oil every 5,000 miles with Fully Synthetic Mobil 1 10W-30...........??

My last car lasted 198,000 miles............and the car still runs absolutely PERFECT, and it will probably go another 75K to 100K miles for the lady who bought it from me. Ever since I bought my old car, I changed the oil religiously every 3,000 miles with Conventional Mobil 10W-30. Changed the Air filter and fuel filter bevery 15,000 miles. Tuneup every 40,000 miles. Replaced the brake fluid and antifreeze every 40,000 miles. 4 wheel alignment every 12,000 miles. Rotate and balance the tires every 6,000 miles. STP Fuel system Cleaner every 6,000 miles. Never ran my engine past 4,000 RPM.
LOL I am very very anal about taking care of my cars.

Anyway, like I said, I LOVE my new 2001 Camry and I want it to last me 225K-250K miles.

Would I be better off.....

Change the oil every 3,000 miles with Conventional Mobil 10W-30
................

Change the oil every 5,000 miles with Fully Synthetic Mobil 1 10W-30...........??
Thank you in advance for the help.

Change the oil every 3000k miles with the synthetic... synthetic is better all the way around...

However.. make sure that your motor calls for 10W-30....(read the owners manual) A lot of Japanese engines are notorious for running on 5w-20 oil

DBP I know a lot of people are more comfortable changing thier oil every 3000k but your car will last just as long if you follow the onwers manual, and I'm fairly certain for a 2001 Camry it's closer to 4000k.

OK But neither one of ya'll really answered my Q.

I know for a fact, from talking to four different master mechanics at 4 different garages, who I trust completely, that with a premium Synthetic like Mobil 1, you do NOT need to chnage the oil every 3,000 miles - that is a FACT and I real certain of that.

Again...........
Conventional Mobil 10W-30 every 3,000 miles........

Or

Synthetic Mobil 1 10W-30 every 5,000 miles??

And as far as my Camry yes it calls for 5W-30. However, the ONLY reason it calls for 5W-30 instead of 10W-30 is because some people, like those in Minnesota, North Dakota etc....where it gets down to -40 degrees or -60 degrees.........10W-30 will not pour sufficiently beause its viscosity is too thick for these extremely cold temp's. That is why 5W-30 is reommended for my 2001 Camry - in case I DO live in these extreme subzero temperatures.

But I don't!!! Where I live it never gets below +10 degrees Fahrenheit. So for me, 10W-30 is actually superior to 5W-30 because 10W-30 will hold up much better when it gets extremely hot, like 103 degrees fahrenheit. I know for a FACT a 10W-30 will hold up much better than a 5W-30 in extremely hot climates, which is where I live.

Please, someone answer my Q.

I used to work out at Mobil and the would definately recommend taking the synthetic. The synthetic Mobil 1 is the best oil around. The Lube Plant Mgr. said that the life of the oil will last up to 10,000 miles. But the official way to do it is: every 3,000 miles change the oil filter and add a quart all the way up to 10,000 miles then completly change it .

That is cool. Mobil is the Official Oil of Nascar. And like I said, in the Japanese car I just sold................198,000 miles and the car still runs PERFECTLY and should last another 75,000 - 100,000 miles. I guess I am superstitious, but I will ALWAYS use Mobil Oil until the day I die....................if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Any other thoughts on Synthetic Mobil 1 every 5,000 miles or Coventional Mobil every 3,000 miles???

DBP For the last time look up maintence in the owners manual and change the oil exactly when it specifies, the manufacturer of the vehicle knows better than anyone when it is optimal to change your oil. :)

So dolfe1 , are you saying I should use Mobil 1 synthetic every 5,000 miles, or should I use conventional Mobil every 3,000 miles??

When does your owners manual say to change the oil?

Buy the synthetic. Costs more, but a much higher quality oil. As long as the system is tight, then you could easily go 5-7k per oil change. My car uses Castrol Synthetic (as do all BMWs) and the scheduled oil changes are 10k.

IMO, the 3k rule is only good for natural oil and really has nothing to do with synthetic's lifespan.

Your other option, not following your choice of two, is to switch to Amsoil. Its synthetic and normal oil changes are 25k+ and you only change the filer about 20-25k. Amazing stuff. My brother had it in his full size Chevy and he went about 45k miles before an oil change, and that was only because some retard at a shop added a quart of natural oil and ruined it. He is anal about all things mechanic (jet mechanic) and would end oil samples out to be tested for impurities and the such. Always came back clean even at 45k.

i'd go with the normal every 3 until you get higher miles, yes the syn is better and will last longer, but if you are not driving hard and change it every 3 the other oil can be better for your engine. when you get to higher miles, it is a better idea to move to syn. my 89 wrangler is rockin 200k and i didn't start syn until around 125. and those gay little magnet oil plugs are woth the $5

hey

How mant miles on the toyo?..My guy says dont use the synthetic if you over 50,000 miles,He says the rings and seals somtimes cant handle the slicker synthetic and cause leaks.Well thats what he says, but who knows for real?Make sure to use frams new oil filter thats rated for 7,000 miles. My wifes 2001 hondas book says to change the oil every 10,000 and filter every 20,000.And it runs like a champ...i think the japs know somthing we don't...lol

DBP I use Mobile one in my Corvette ( it is the oil used by the factory ) and in my SL 500 and in my boat that has twin 502's. I have used it for the last 10 years in everything I own. I change the oil in the cars at 7500 miles and at 75 hrs in the boat and have never had an oil related failure. In my opinion you can't buy a better oil. Just my 2 cents.

dbp, i also mobil 1 syn. in my truck.i run 5-30 in the winter and 10-30 in the summer.its good to run a non detergent oil in new engine to "break in" the seals and such for about 6000-10,000 miles.but since it a used car and they probally have used conventional oil that doesnt matter.now once you go syn. it not wise to change back cause not all oils that is left in the engine will mix well with it.

i think that syn. oil changed about every 5000-7500 miles will be best, the only draw back to syn. oil is the cost.i will add an additive like slick 50 or something about 25000 miles.mine still runs good.its an 02 model but it has 60000 miles on it.

You must be mistaken, what kind of Honda?

i agree w/ the above opinions about synthetic. a little more expensive, worth it in the long run.

i also agree with the above sentiments regarding the 3,000 mile rule. there are more and more auto enthusiast articles written of late about this subject. car manuals have gradually extended interval requirements for oil changes over the past several years. consensus is that requirements were 3,000 for a long time for 1 reason: oil companies wanted it that way. my Prelude gets a synthetic job every 5,000 miles, even in the cold of boston. never a problem. good luck

i've never heard of a Honda suggested interval so high either. the manual for mine is 3,000-5,000 depending on geographic locale.

I would run the mob 1 with the new K&N oil filter. Not sure if they make them for cars yet but that is what I run in my truck with a 454. The synthetic is made to last longer so 5000+ before change is ok, especially since you don't get it over 4500 rpm's (I don't know how you do that) :p . Also if I don't run the mob 1 then I run Dello or other 15w, I also know people who will run this in cars I know that it is ok in Texas since it doesn't usually get that cold.
