Dog Survives Terrible Abuse — Then Changes The World
A DOG NAMED GUCCI

Doug James still remembers the night he saved the puppy who would end up changing history for animals.

"The little dog was blazing from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail," James said, describing the moment he found the burned puppy.

The person held responsible for the crime — dousing the puppy in lighter fluid, hanging him from a tree and set him on fire — would only get 6 months in jail.

But James took in the puppy into his home and helped him heal.

This was back in Alabama, in 1994. And despite his injuries, Gucci survived — and James took it upon himself to speak on the dog's behalf. For 16 happy years, the pair worked to change how animals were treated in the eyes of the law.

And they really did change the world: Gucci's Law, named for the puppy who survived the worst, changed Alabama law in 2000, making this kind of animal abuse a felony with severe consequences. Today, crimes against animals are taken much more seriously, thanks to precedents like this.

Even though, after a long and happy life, Gucci passed away in 2010, his legacy will never leave us. Now, a documentary, A Dog Named Gucci, tells his story.

"The sadness I feel looking into cages is nothing compared to how it must feel looking out.” - Unknown

Damn scally getting real with that one! I remember picking up my Rottweiler from the pound when I was 12 years old and I just sat infront of his cage for 3 hours while my parents did the paperwork and every puppy there didn't look or act like puppies.

Wonder what you guys think it proper ediquate when coming to someone else's dog. My dog is incredibly well trained, he has Avalanche training and search and rescue training and is great off leash so generally he stays off leash everywhere I go. When people have their dogs on leash I grab my dog by his harness (he always wears a ruffwear harness) but if the dog is off leash I assume it's fine mine is also. Today my dog got attack by one of the dogs off leash which is fine because my dog is very large and listened and came to me the second I called but the other person freaked at me. I figure that person should have their dog on leash if it is an aggressor no? Also when we left I put my dog in the back of my truck and someone reached in while I was putting away his harness and tried to pet him, he doesn't like people in his spaces (truck bed, his cage, my bed) so he growled at the person and bub smacked his nose and said no, I don't hit my dog as a form of discipline so I was quite pissed. This isn't normal right? As a dog owner I would never discipline someone else's dog with a physical action but I guess other people do it that way?

Pretty ballsy to have snakes your dogs nose! Your dog could've bit him.
Personally, I wouldn't freaked the f*** out if someone hit my dog. It's like hitting someone else's child.
I am extremely defensive and protective of my dogs, I don't think I would've reacted kindly to that. (Esp. On anavar )
Is your pup ok, did the other dog get him?

Naw other dog was like a 45lb border collie didn't really have any fighting chance with my 120lb German Shepard and that's why I called him right quick otherwise I'm fine with dogs wrestling if they are an even match for one another. (Wrestling not fighting). Ya it was ballsy but my pooch looks super nice so everyone wants to pet him. It took a lot of self control to not freak out but my vehicle is marked and my dog was wearing his ruffwear pack that has first aid crosses on it so I kind of have to rise above sometimes.

As requested, this was his first day back on snow this year working on some search drills image.jpeg

Also for all the dog lovers out there if you have never heard off ruffwear check them out they make the highest quality dog accesories, packs and have a lifetime warranty. Also they carry the only dog harness certified for rope rescue and repelling which is pretty awesome if you do any mountaineering

Oh my goodness what an adorable puppy!! And that view. Wow.
I never get to see snow like that (or any really). It's so majestic!
What do you carry in those packs?
Meal prep? Lol

Gorgeous doggy! I can't believe that douche touched his little snout. How dare he put his hands on such a baby!

In that pack he carries: first aid kit, rescue rope, his water and food, a snow mat blanket for when we take breaks to lay on and a Avalanche beacon just incase I need to rescue him. He's got 4 packs and we just pick depending on what we do that day :D

Oh wow, both of you are mountain badasses. That's so cute!! He's not only a gorgeous dog but he actually provides a service. A pup in the workforce:)
You gotta have one of the coolest jobs. That view and you get to work with your best friend.
I still can't get over how pretty those trees look covered in snow and the skies are so blue!!

Still just a little pup... Listens so well. Runs to the room when I'm home, sits on the bed until food is poured and water. Waits to be told to eat. While out he still needs a leash sometimes but around the house he's right beside me, sits when I stand still. When I leave he walks to the tree mid drive and goes back around the house. When I pull in he's right back at that tree.
Tank is an Am Staff pit

That's tank.

Here's my boy grizzly who got stolen around 5 months old.. Damn thieves. The golden and white is deceiving of the rott but his brothers who were dark brown and black were dead on. His color was unique and paws the biggest so I took him.
Rottweiler Alaskan malamute . Both pups you see 10 weeks old

If someone hit my dog I would have a difficult time avoiding a physical altercation; especially in your circumstance considering dudeman invaded your dog's personal space. Good on you for rising above.

Any mastiff fans? We have an African Boerboel now. My cousin has Cane Corsos. We are thinking about getting a Dogo Argentino.
