Dogs

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead.

He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble... At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.

When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.

When he was close enough, he called out, 'Excuse me, where are we?'

'This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered.. 'Wow! Would you happen to have some water?' the man asked.

Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up. 'The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

'Can my friend,' gesturing toward his dog, 'come in, too?' the traveler asked.

'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.'

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.

After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence.

As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.

'Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?'

'Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in.'

'How about my friend here?' the traveler gestured to the dog.

'There should be a bowl by the pump.'

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.

The traveler filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog.

When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree..

'What do you call this place?' the traveler asked.

'This is Heaven,' he answered.

'Well, that's confusing,' the traveler said. 'The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.'

'Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell.'

'Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?'

'No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind.

Travis Allen's dog, Chipper, howled in delight when they were reunited Jan. 28, 2018, at Endless Love Pet Palace in Warner Robins. Allen was visiting from North Carolina when Chipper got away Dec. 28, 2017. http://www.newsobserver.com/news/nation-world/national/article197266209.html (Watch this lost dog howl in delight after being reunited with his owner after a month)

We used one for our lab/Shepard mix. He was an exmilitary k9 dude and we as legit as they come. The dog was gone for 2 months and came back as an insanely well trained dog.

Since then we have not kept up with the training portion so she is more or less a regular dog, but when you give commands she is back in the zone fast. She was unmanageable prior to his training.

Our pitbull is a 100% love everything dog but doesn't listen to anyone haha, he is perfect. No training at all with him.

I'm thinking about getting a trainer for my pit. Just so she has more discipline. She's a great dog. No issues. Just kinda thinking it would be good.

Fur Babies Matter: My Dog Is Not Property

In May 2015, Michael Hammons, an Army veteran, made headline news when he was arrested in Georgia after breaking into a hot car to save a dog’s life. Hammons stated that he has no regrets as to what happened, that he “personally felt the heat in the car [and] saw the dog was panting[,]” and knew the dog was in distress.

“The Georgia good samaritan law allows someone to break a car window to save a child or an adult in distress, but not an animal. Animal lovers around the world were outraged. This leads to the inevitable question – why does the law fail to protect the animals that we so deeply love and share our lives with?

Despite all the evidence of pets’ value as companions, the law still categorizes dogs as property. In the United States, 66.7% of dog owners consider their dogs to be family members and only 0.7% of dog owners consider their dogs to be property. Under the current law, because dogs are categorized as objects rather than as a being, dogs are afforded significantly fewer legal protections than minors.

In the 1700s, children and dogs were treated the same— both were considered property of their owners. Now, however, children and dogs are treated substantially different. The purpose of this Note is to argue for a change of dogs’ legal status in the United States. Dogs should be seen as a type of person, and the best way to achieve this is through a dog-guardianship system.

Prehistoric Puppy May Be Earliest Evidence of Pet-Human Bonding

Dogs may have been man’s best friend — and treated as such— since the earliest days of domestication.

According to a study published recently in the Journal of Archaeological Science, prehistoric people likely cared for a sick puppy for weeks before it died, suggesting an emotional attachment to the animal. A new look at an old dog: Bonn-Oberkassel reconsidered - ScienceDirect
