First cycle log and meet prep

I'm still a few months out from my second one. At 2am I was sitting in the trunk of my car in the hotel parking lot eating with a glazed donut around each finger (5 whole fucking donuts). I think I scared off some people lol.

You have anyone that goes with you or you fly solo?

Solo except for my girl and maybe the guy spotting me in the video. He's very new to lifting though. I don't even know anyone in real life that's into powerlifting. Last year I drove up alone the night before for weigh ins and because it's a two and a half hour drive. My girl came in time for the meet. Not sure how we're doing it this year.

If you're allowed 24hr weigh ins def take advantage and chow down after. It helps having someone there assisting you. When I went I had so many guys from my other board come and my coach was there as well. I didn't have to pay attention to my name being called, loading the plates for warmups, etc. I could just relax and focus on lifting. I compete raw classic for now so no knee wraps or belts, yet lol, but if you have to wrap yourself that's a pain in the ass.

I've driven as far as 5-6hrs to watch a meet and support a friend. I love watching this shit and helping/supporting out guys when needed.

Subbed!! Im not a power lifter but i have been a power bodybuilder my whole life. So i dont have much power comp knowledge or advice but i enjoy seeing how you PL's do your thing.

Yeah, I'll most likely have no worries on making weight at 242 being 231 yesterday and around a month out right now.

My first meet my name got called for my third squat attempt and I didn't have both wraps on and ended up dropping the roll and tore off two fingernails struggling to get it on in time. Not all the way off, but back enough they were pouring blood. I'd invest in some of those knee wrap rollers if they weren't over $100. Kind of exploring some DIY options right now.

This is one of the nearest meets to where I live, most others would be 5+ hours or more. There was actually an unsanctioned meet at the local university a few months back, but I didn't know about it until after with it not being on powerlifting watch. Just heard about it at the gym later.

Good to have you. I started the log a little late, I just finished an eight week volume block, currently testing 2RM this week and then moving into some low rep work leading up to the meet.

Big deadlift PR today.

Weight was 230

Five minute cardio warm-up
Sumo deadlift warm-up

Light bench 275 3x1
Light squat 290 3x3
Standing cable crunches 3x10
Chest supported rows 3x20
No cardio today

Great lift! I got some work to do!
Have you always done sumo or did you switch at some point?

Nice PRs. I think the reason you struggled a bit on the 585 is bc it looks like your knees locked out a bit early. If they lock out early your left relying on your hip extensors moreso and you get that jerky up and down motion that you see right before lockout.

Also, Maybe try experimenting with a slightly closer foot placement. Not much just a little bit. It could help you rotate your knees out more which will tighten your glutes more.

Thanks, Jay.

No, I did conventional until the start of this training cycle nine weeks ago. Old PR was 555. Hard to say if it was the test cycle or switching to sumo that made the difference, probably a bit of both.

Thanks, Doc.

Yeah, was definitely a problem with the setup or execution based on how fast 570 went in comparison. Also, I was super amped up for 570, heart was thundering and I think I exhausted myself a bit.

Thanks for the tip, when I first tried sumo I went super wide and changing to this helped a lot, maybe going in closer will help more. Do you think I should wait until after the meet to try to change that or just try icing in a little now.

Just under a month now.

I'd just stick to what you know now. 4wks isn't enough time to adapt yourself to the lift even if the change is minor IMO. Especially considering the last week before the meet will be rest or vey light MOB work and the week before that you're typically working up to your openers on the competition lifts only. Just start experimenting after the meet

That's what I was thinking. I'll toy with it after though. It might turn out to be the way to go though. I went through a lot of little changes with conventional fine tuning it and I'm still brand new on sumo.

I tried sumo with my coach there to guide me and we decided it just wasn't the best way for me to pull. I'm thinking of trying to go back to it again, or at least work on it to use it in the off season to give my lumbar a break from conventional pulling. I'd like to use it as an assistance lift even if I don't wind up using it to compete.

I did that last year leading up to my meet. Was running 5/3/1 Boring, but Big and did sumo for the 5x10 and 5x5 sets and conventional for the 5/3/1 sets. Seemed to work pretty well. This training cycle was the first time I'd programmed it as my main pull.

I'd love to hire a coach someday.

Great work That first pull was good for 600+. Really good speed off the floor. It looked like you got a little forward on 585 trying to get it moving a bit too quickly and were just a little off balance after that. You did a good job grinding it out to lockout.

Congrats on the PR's all week. Training looks very solid.
