4 years ago dislocated my shoulder in a wrestling match in highschool... the trainer there told me it was ok so i went to some physical therapy and it never healed obviously.. i've always had bad pain with it and it slides out of socket fairly easily... but i've goten so used to the pain i didnt realize how bad it was
so last week i go to get it checked out again (4 years later after alot of doctor appointments and what not) and i got an MRI and arthrogram (where they inject a dye into the joint to help see in the MRI)...
it turns out i have had a very large labral tear in my left shoulder and its close to bein torn completly.. my only option is surgery...

the doc is the best in town but he says i'll be in a sling for 3 weeks... wont get full rotation for 2 months.. and wont be doing any form of heavy lifting for 4-6 months... i wont have the surgery till this summer... so i can finish this semester..

pretty depressing especially when i'm training for the collegiate nationals...

but on the good side... he did say i could ride a stationary bike and do light leg presses and some ab work!!!! (i felt like kicking his ass when he said this to me)

Awww man that sucks and I am sorry to hear that, but remember, you will recover and return to your normal lifting. I had reconstructive elbow surgery a few years back and couldn't lift for six months! Felt like my world was gonna end, I just kept eating a high protein diet when i wasn't lifting so I wouldn't lose as much muscle. When I came back I just started off really light and worked my way back up. Got back to where i was before in about 3-4 months I believe. Just some words of encouragement. Good luck bro.

Man almost the same thing happened to me. My cuz and I were playing around and he dropped me on my shoulder, I couldnt move the damn thing. After a while it got better and 8 years later I still feel something there it doesnt hurt but I can tell that it doesnt feel the same as my other shoulder.

Bigcaboi nailed it. Jintropin's manufacturers recommend doing HGH 10 ius ed x 10 days starting 2 or 3 days after surgery.

Arginine and some other aminos are supposed to be good too, but not as good as HGH.

Damn bro, sorry to hear this. I have popped my shoulder in and out over 50 times since my boxing days in high school, so I know how it feels bro. I know I had to have done some damage but it hasnt happened in a year and I can't afford surgery, but good luck with the procedure, and recovery process, wisdom.

Hey greyowl I am almost 4 months Post Op what do you think about a Decca/Prop weeks 1-5. I am to the strenthing portion of my rehab?

i appreciate the kind words.. right now i'm kinda in the denial phase..i keep tellin myself i'l just wait and get it done later, but thats really not an option.. its definatly hard to get motivated to go in the gym now when i know its just goin to be wasted away for 4-6 months startin in a few weeks...

i figure i'l just eat right and doin cardio/abs/and ing leg press alot... try to keep somethin...

kinda es me off thought that i just bought a bunch of xxl and xl shirts for the summer though.. probably need to take them back from some ing mediums.. lol

The downtime is depressing but you'll come back. You are on the right track with thinking about what you can still train in light of the recuperation period. I trained one month after surgery. Still had my left side in a sling but I did pulldowns, one arm bench and military presses, curls, tricep extensions, etc.

There is a medical phenomenon wherein if you continue to train the uninjured side, the injured side will atrophy less. I came back from my ortho appointment, told the board, and a number of people said they had been told the same thing by their doctors or had heard of the phenomenon in the past.

Most important thing is not to let your brain take you off in a bad direction. Stay positive, its a temporary condition especially at your age.

I would however give yourself one complete year after surgery before you expect to be 100%. Some will heal faster, some slower.

Couldn't tell you, I'm not an expert in the AASs department.

Sorry to hear the bad news whid. At least age is on your side. Did you do the bench competition and aggravate it or was it something you knew was bad but you were hoping it would go away? Do like hogg said and work legs and the healthy upperbody and you will be able to maintain a lot. We already know you have the discipline. Take care

the only thing i can say is DO NOT COME BACK EARLY EVER. you'll regret it if you try to do anything before the doc clears you to start.

i had a friend in the same situation as you, he got it fixed within a year of the initial dislocation. but he decided not to pay attention to the doc and was out moving it in full rotation within 2 weeks. needless to say his arm got worse and he now blames it on the doc instead of his mind numbingly stupid actions.

of course this doc was one of the best orthos in the country and did one hell of a sweet job on my knees.
