How did the mock meet go?
DOC!!!!! Your back[emoji4]
Mock meet? What did I miss the last couple days?
Do you find having a coach pretty useful? You're obviously knowledgeable yourself, but I could see it being helpful picking up on things you might miss in your own programming and very helpful in person with form checks and stuff. Seems a lot of the top level guys use them, even if they are super knowledgeable themselves.
I thought about hiring an online coach for my meet prep, but cost was an issue and also I think not having your coach in person would be suboptimal for a lot of reasons. As far as I know there are no powerlifting coaches within a few hours of where I am, unfortunately. I may still look into an online one at some point in the future though.
How's sumo deadlift feeling? I think I'm going back to conventional for the off season, but will likely use sumo for meets and leading up to them.
I do find having one useful. At the very least I get to bump ideas off him and see what another objective mind thinks. My sumo form leaves a lot to be desired. I'm just not built for it but with my coach's help I was able to fix a few mistakes that I overlooked.
Ask TheProdigalSon what he thinks about a coach that he's never met or worked with personally. Him and I have the same guy. A member on another forum also uses this coach and just did his first meet ever with a ~1640lb total @ 242 I believe. Set PRs on 2 lifts and pulled over 600 with a hook grip. Never once met the coach but did send videos and whatnot. Point is some people will still benefit even if they never meet their coach but some will do better working in person. It's up to you, the coach. And what your strengths/weaknesses are.
Sumo is weird to me. Just doesn't feel natural but I haven't done it in years. I'm willing to do nay thing though to keep this back issue from preventing me from being able to lift and compete. I'll most likely still compete conventional but use sumo to help, take stress off my back.
I gathered from reading the logs that you two had the same coach. Yeah, if the coach was really involved with talking to you regularly and reviewing your videos I could see it being a great help. A lot of the online coaches I've looked at only guarantee like one conversation a week and are likely super busy and unable to really go the extra mile for the client like the one you're describing does.
i wish my gym had boxes to do box jumps with!
my coach is very good at getting back to me promptly. generally within a few hours. ive gotten very good at follow directions, considering my colorful past. i do exactly as my coach says, no more no less. i asked if i could add cardio in because i wasnt sure if that would have diminishing returns. As soon as we hashed out the details, he emailed me and said for the next 12 weeks im God to you, do as i say and you will see results. and sure enough i did. My squat went up something like 85-95lbs.
part of the reason i decided to go with a coach is so i didnt have to figure out all of my programming. call me lazy, but im very indecisive. so id end up with 16 different training blocks to choose from. i was skeptical at first. i had a coach before him for 1 month and he was impossible to get a hold of and i wouldnt get any form corrections till after i had already trained that lift again. but i took that chance and it was well worth it.
this is not a promotion or shilling for strength first/POB. just my experience.
Did he go over your old training, what works for you and what doesn't, etc and come up with a plan?
Nope.
as far as what works and what doesn't, i told him what i wanted to work on a focus on (squats). But that was about it. im not even sure he made my programming any different. but you know what, my squat went up almost 100lbs. my thoughts are trust in the process, do what youre supposed to do, and the results will shine through.
i think we are very similar in the fact we over complicate things. this is powerlifting, its simple. eat carbs and lift heavy things
Squat is my weak point in relation to my other lifts, too. I'd have no problem following directions to the letter if I believed in who was giving them either. It'll be awhile off, but I think I will get some coaching for my next meet. Not the just for fun push/pull I might do later this year, but a full power meet.
I do that in most aspects of life, my mind misses the simplest answer and goes straight to the overcomplicated ones.
Sorry for the log hijack, Doc. Squats are looking strong, by the way. 2x bodyweight should be right there if you haven't gotten it already.
Hijack away. Mi casa es su casa.
Ive gotten over 2x BW at my meet. Hoping to beat previous meet PR significantly this time around. I'm confident in my squat. Bench is weak as fuck but coming along slowly. Deadlifts make me nervous. Not really sure my back Will let me get another PR just yet.
I haven't hit a 2x bodyweight squat without wraps yet, but I think I'm fairly close even though I haven't done a raw squat max in awhile.
How'd you hurt your back?
If your squat w/ wraps goes up your raw squat should also. Keep it up. Right now I'm raw classic so I can't use wraps. I want to use then in training though for the overloading effect.
Tbh I really don't know how. A month or so after my meet it just started out of nowhere. Kept lifting through it. It's some pain and some tightness. Went a few days at a time of excruciating pain but right now it's manageable. 2 MRIs done, my doctor looked at it, had an phyidcal therapist look at it and my coach as well.
