Meso Powerlifting Corner

So far this benching every session is killin me. Im seeing results and getting stronger, but Im not recovering hardly at all. I feel like its gonna catch up sooner than later and ill either stall out or get injured.
Anyone have any tips, or should I maybe skip a day every once in awhile. I figure it has do be doable because many people before me have run the same program with success.

Don't hit RPE 10's and rarely hit 9's except for your last sets and that'll go a long way towards keeping you healthy and progressing. Get in band work when you can, too.

Its really not the weight. Just the frequency. Im doing sheiko, so it usually only goes up to 80-85%. But even 70 starts feeling heavy after a month of benching four days a week. My elbows are starting to feel over used.

Hmmm. I don't know, maybe you'll adapt after a couple months. One of those compression cuff things might help, but I have no experience with them myself.

Just an update for anyone considering it.

For the past few weeks Ive been taking a stretching class and Yoga 2Xs each a week. Both have been helping me
A)Put up more weight
B)Become a lot more flexible
C)Keep from getting nagging little injuries (except to my elbows)

Just something to consider if its available around you. At 6 ft 250+lbs I stick out, but its worth it.

P.S. The women in there love me because all the other men are either skinny or "iffy"

I've been preaching the flexibility thing since my first day here man it's awesome! I've probably gone to a bit of an extreme with it but it's cool being flexible and large plus if it helps the big 3 be bigger that's worth it just there! Man I betcha those ladies are eatin you up, when I was doing yoga it was just MILF galore in there only time I'm getting hit on more is when I taught Aquafit classes at the Rec centre (there are some crazy 40-60 y/o out there and when they get together they'll say anything)

The instructor actually gave me her personal number if I ever have questions and asked for mine. She said it was in case she wasnt going to be there I would know. It was funny because people who have been there for months said she never told them that. LMAO.

And the flexibility has helped. Im reaching parts of my body I forgot existed o_O

So I've been spending a lot of time reading about it and I think I'm going to make the full switch to hookgrip for my deadlifts, my hand/ well middle finger is currently semi fucked and I can't grip the barbell very well but instead of using straps I can still hookgrip 455+ no issues for one set. I was reading over at SS that it has some big advantages being symmetrical for the entire pull and once you are use to the pain/thumbs adapt it doesn't really hurt. The plan is to stay double overhand until I can't (currently can pull singles with 405 DOH) then I'll move onto hook grip until the pain is too much and then move onto using straps so I remain symmetrical for the pull and eventually when pain tolerance builds in the thumbs the straps will not be used at all except for AMRAP sets so that pain isn't the limiting factor. Anybody have any expeirence with hookgrip beyond this? I've been doing a bunch of research on it and think it'll help with my current hand issue and the issue I've got going on in my back right now to a certain degree at least

I don't pull mixed grip during training for the symmetrical reasons youre talking about. Something about it really irritates my shoulders when the work gets heavy

Do you just double overhand everything or hookgrip or just strap up and on meet day go mix grip? My issue is an impingement inbetween a couple vertebra that I'm making worse with all the heavy lifting and doing mix grip seems to be the only time it really gets bad so I'm taking advantage of the fact I currently can't do mixed grip and gonna go for hookgrip. Plus pulling huge numbers hookgrip is always crazy to see

Double overhand as heavy as I can go and when it's a limiting factor use straps. I've yet to meet a weight I couldn't pull mixed grip when needed even though I don't train that way. Just can't use it all the time. I need to get good at hookgrip. Always looks bad ass pulling heavy no straps or mixed grip.

Just as a frame of reference, how heavy until you guys need straps? I'm using them around 400+. No way my hands can handle more right now.

I dont use straps either for DL. But I do switch from overhand to mixed around 365. Unless Im doing pauses it might be sooner.

Edit: I'll add this. I used to use straps before I was training to compete. The reason I stopped is I believe you "practice as you play". If you dont want to compete I say use them because your doing DLs strictly as a workout. Just my opinion.

I've never used straps for deadlift and my grip can handle more than I could pull. Grip isn't an issue.

I pull double overhand to around 405, then do mixed grip from there on. Best max to date is 600 with mixed grip.

I don't use straps for deadlifts. I use them for RDL's and rack pulls and SLDL's

These are the only things I use them for, too.

I've never used straps for a deadlift I go double overhand till 405 then mixed grip and I've pulled 545 but I'll be doing hookgrip instead of mixed now. Only thing I strap up for is heavy shrugs and rack pulls otherwise I'm a firm believer in buildin up your grip strength by staying DOH as long as possible and never using straps for anything else
