I hate the term "functional strength" because it implies that some strength is not functional, which I don't agree with... BUT if there ever was a workout type that built functional strength it would definitely be strongman. So true, lol. It made it less fun to look forward to for me. But, it was fun doing outside workouts in the summer.
I was a little concerned about yokes and farmers because they felt like they were putting a ton of strain on my knees. Walking with a few hundred pounds just feels worse than standing still and lifting it.
I think strongman training probably has the potential to change someone's body composition more than most any other type of training though...
How often do you have to push something off of your chest in real life (powerlifting) and how often do you have to pick up something overhead and immediately put it down (oly), how often do you have to carry shit in front of you or in your hands or pick shit up off the floor and move it? At the very least it'll make you a good grocery getter haha.
I hate the yoke, but only because I suck at it. I don't mind carrying the weight on my back, but I'm SUPER slow with it. However I have been really learning how to drive with my hips lately and it is making me a lot faster with the yoke (but I am still slow). I have a 700lb yoke for 100 ft (50 ft down and back) at my next competition. The most I have ever done before was 650 for 120 feet.
