Strongman Thread

So true, lol. It made it less fun to look forward to for me. But, it was fun doing outside workouts in the summer.

I was a little concerned about yokes and farmers because they felt like they were putting a ton of strain on my knees. Walking with a few hundred pounds just feels worse than standing still and lifting it.

I think strongman training probably has the potential to change someone's body composition more than most any other type of training though...
I hate the term "functional strength" because it implies that some strength is not functional, which I don't agree with... BUT if there ever was a workout type that built functional strength it would definitely be strongman.

How often do you have to push something off of your chest in real life (powerlifting) and how often do you have to pick up something overhead and immediately put it down (oly), how often do you have to carry shit in front of you or in your hands or pick shit up off the floor and move it? At the very least it'll make you a good grocery getter haha.

I hate the yoke, but only because I suck at it. I don't mind carrying the weight on my back, but I'm SUPER slow with it. However I have been really learning how to drive with my hips lately and it is making me a lot faster with the yoke (but I am still slow). I have a 700lb yoke for 100 ft (50 ft down and back) at my next competition. The most I have ever done before was 650 for 120 feet.

Thor obviously has the size advantage, but Eddie is fucking scrappy and tenacious. I don't see Thor beating Eddie.

From a strongman perspective, I don't see how this makes anyone take the sport of strongman more seriously as a legitimate sport though, and I'm not really a fan of all of the antics that led to this point.

I want Eddie to win because I lost all respect for Thor when he claimed Eddie robbed him of the WSM title... Which is what started this whole fight charade. He went so far as to call Eddie a cheat... Which was absurd. If he was actually robbed, it was from the refs... Not Eddie. But, he wasn't robbed of the title by the refs either... He just lost by a small margin. Get over it.

I do think Thor has an edge.. But for some reason I think I'd put my money on Eddie here. I'm not sure if it's because I just want Eddie to win or if I think he actually has a better shot at pulling it off. I think Eddie will have a better game plan going into it than Thor... I think Thor is just going to come out swinging non stop with questionable technique, that'll eventually give Eddie some opportunities while he waits it out.

I agree with y’all. Not a fan of the nonsense that created the boxing match. For all we know they planned the whole thing. I’d put $ on Eddie but it’s not like these guys are actually boxers so I expect this to look pretty sloppy. As a big boxing fan and having boxed myself I can’t say I’ll pay for the fight

I’m 100% buying a yoke, farmers and sand bags this summer. I fucking love strongman training, but have no implements lol.

A recent competition recap:

I took 3rd in my weight class out of 10 guys.

Event 1, Viking press 300 lbs:

I hit 14 reps here and took second. First place got 15 reps.

Event 2, yoke run 700 lbs for 100 ft:

By far my weakest event, however, I crushed it compared to how I normally perform with the yoke. I hit 100 feet (the farthest I have ever taken 700 was 25 ft) in 42 seconds. However this was still only good enough for a 5th place finish.

Event 3, max axle deadlift:

I hit 615 on axle at like RPE 7.5-8, 29 lb all time deadlift PR. This put me in a 4 way tie for 3rd. Hopefully by the end of the year I’ll be a 700 lb deadlifter on a power bar or DL bar.

Event 4, sandbag/keg/sandbag medley:

Took 2nd on this event at 32 seconds. 265 bag, 225 keg, 308 bag. First place guy CRUSHED this event at 27 seconds. 3rd place finished in 56 seconds. Unfortunately I tweaked my bicep when lapping the 308 bag, which greatly impacted my stone loading.

Event 5, 320 lb stone over 50" bar:

Took 3rd in this event in 30 seconds (everyone got 60s but I cut it short). I was one point ahead of 4th place, so I knew if I tied him I would keep my one point lead. I could feel a small tweak in my bicep going into this but on the very first rep I felt a sharp, tearing pain in my left bicep, so I did as many reps as I needed to keep 3rd place (4 reps) and called it there.

Overall I did really well and hit pretty much all of the numbers I expected to outside of the viking press. I took top 3 in 4 out of 5 events and my weakest event killed my point total about as much as I expected it to. Hit PRs in 3 out of 5 events too so I can’t be upset about that.

With all of that said, you’ll never hear me make an excuse for losing, I got beat fair and square by two really solid competitors.

Now time to heal the bicep and start prepping for nationals in October. I’ll have another shot at an Arnold bid then.

That’s fucking awesome, man. Sucks about the bicep—that seems like a common strongman injury.

Thanks man!

Yea the bicep was me being stupid... most bicep injuries are, at least IMO.

I was lapping the 308 sandbag and I didn't quite get it over my knees, so I rolled it onto my knees using a hammer curling motion. It rolled up just fine and I didn't feel a damn thing when I was doing it, but shortly after the event was over I felt a small, dull ache in my bicep.

Stones lit my bicep on fire, like a searing, tearing pain in the muscle belly. I feel like I am average at most events, but I'm an excellent stone loader, and even using "perfect" technique (if that's actually possible) it was still just lighting up my bicep. I could've hit 10 reps in 60s if I didn't have that injury.

I have a fringe sport one that's pretty sturdy and it can double as a rack for squats and bench if you set it up right... Pretty nice multi use implement.

Strongman is the only strength and physique sport with any hope of acceptance and televised competition. I wish they’d stop this, get back to competing, and market the fuck out of it..

No, I am a middle weight amateur, but I'll take that as a compliment haha.

This particular show is one of the heaviest, if not the heaviest, amateur shows in the nation.
Moving some big weights for a Mw, what’s the limit on MW in strongman? 200 lbs

231.4 is the cut off for middle weights. So 176-231.4 is middle weight. Under 200 is a middle weight subclass. Of all of the guys competing, I was the heaviest. I weighed in at 230.6 24 hours ahead of time and I was about 249 on competition day. The second lightest guy won the show. He weighed in at 220 on competition day.

the lightest guy at the show is also one of my training partners. He weighed in at 212 on competition day. He totaled over 1800 lbs under 198 in PL’ing, so he’s pretty friggin strong. His problem is he’s just too damn stiff/tight and needs to learn to loosen up to be faster and more explosive with strongman movements.

for the record, on a good day sitting at 250, I’d probably total around 1600 lbs (guessing 550 squat, 400 bench and 650 DL), which really isn’t that strong. “Strong”man is a bit of a misnomer though. I think you could make a really good argument that most of the time it’s not the strongest guy that wins strongman competitions. I know for a fact that of all my competitions (I’ve podiumed every Comp I’ve been at) I’ve never been the strongest guy, probably not even top 2-3 strongest, at any of them

It’s a pretty dynamic sport. Strongmen have to be quick, mobile and strong. And capable of doing it all day.
