Strongman Thread

Sometimes the training is the best part anyway!

Curious as to what I can OHP with a log.. Ive never trained on one. My barbell OHP is 245 at 190 lbs so curious as to the carryover.
The clean is the limiting factor for some guys. My back is pretty strong so it's not the issue for me .

Other than that my barbell and log are pretty much 1:1. For the press part of the movement it's basically just a change in grip angle.

I want to try the Juggernaut strongman club programming but I need more access to stones... I need a stone of steel. Except I don't feel like spending money... If I got all of the money back I spend on this stuff, it would be like winning the lottery.

Why steel stones?

I'll be honest, I haven't touched our stones since last year...

"Stone of Steel" by Mike bartos. It's like an all in one.

It is one of my favorite implements... I just can't work up to a 2rm with what I have lol.

I think I'll start in spring with heavy strongman programming so I can do stuff outside. It would be a better schedule for me by that time of year too.

A friend of mine will be going for his pro card pretty soon. 350lbs, down from 450...

Man I have never seen that thing until now, that is bad ass!

And I'm with you on waiting for better weather to train outside. Its still in the upper 90's here ..

Thought I’d drop a line here so I can follow the thread. I’m looking to get into strongman in the masters division early next year . Right now just focusing on driving my base strength numbers up and trying to get some hands on implements 1-2x a week. I’m sitting on the edge weight wise between the light and heavyweight division too so that’s a decision to be made at a later date. Prob just enter my first comp at whatever natural weight I’m at . Prob around 230ish depending how this cycle finishes .

The price is insane! I would love to make a set of stones myself... Mostly large, some with lighter material in middle and some heavier.

Practice the technique at various weights but on physically large stones.

So very expensive, though.

It's actually not that hard to make your own mold. Just do the math, or steal the dimensions from listings for pre-made molds, buy a ball that matches and fiberglass it.

Deflate the ball after fiberglass has cured and fill. I've actually even done this with paper machete heavily reinforced with tape.

230lbs and up are actually really competitive weight classes, simply because that's the class most fall into. So if you can compete in a lower class, you might do better starting out. Just something to chew on a bit.

Also, don't focus on just strength. Conditioning will kick your assets way before you get to the point that your strength, or lack of, hurts you in competition. The guys that go in thinking that just putting up big numbers puts in in the bag get humbled pretty quick.

Why did this thread die? Let’s revive this shit. I got a plat+ competition coming up in early May that I’m prepping for. Anyone else got competitions coming up?

Start up a log and make threads, maybe you can draw some competitors here. I would definitely read even if I didn't have anything to contribute. There for awhile it was pretty much just @Worf and I in the PL section and it picked up from there.

Alot of strong man fans here too
I'm sure we would all be interested on updates and traininf methods etc.
I have a training log of sorts. It’s more of a gear log that has some of my training and lifts. Maybe next competition peak I’ll include training and gear in the same log.

check out “test c, tren a, and oxandrolone” of you wanna see a little bit about my training. I’m 3 weeks out from the competition so it’s a little late to start a training log

I haven't done any strongman training in a while... I've considered adding a day for it, I just haven't given a ton of thought to programming.

The implements are the hardest part to piece together.

Will do, awesome!

Probably the number one reason I dont implement Strongman training.

If I was at a Gym that has Hussafel stones, proper padding for using the stones, Atlas, Yokes etc.. I would NOT be able to resist for long lol
Especially if there was a log, I fucking love log.
But I'm not made of money, so if I'm splurging on unique equipment, it's going to be a Texas Power Bar > Log

I own a yoke, farmers handles, stone and log... The log is fun but I rarely use the others. If I'm being honest, they're a lot of fucking work just to get setup.. Much less to actually train with. The guys that do legit strongman training have my deepest respect because that shit is fucking hard.

I made the atlas stone and that was fun but it was too light to really get much out of... It was good for learning technique. Fuck that fucking 200lb sandbag I got... It was a humbler.

If you really want, there is a lot of strongman type of stuff you can do without having the equipment. You could use a trap bar for farmers/frame carry, a straight bar easily replicates and axle bar. If you can get a swiss bar, you can kind of replicate log press (but not the clean portion), if you have a t-bar pin you can replicate stones. Front squats I think are the number one exercise for carryover into MANY strongman events as well. Especially SSB front squats. zercher front squats off of the floor are killer too

Good lord the setup and tear down usually takes longer than the actual exercises lol

So true, lol. It made it less fun to look forward to for me. But, it was fun doing outside workouts in the summer.

I was a little concerned about yokes and farmers because they felt like they were putting a ton of strain on my knees. Walking with a few hundred pounds just feels worse than standing still and lifting it.

I think strongman training probably has the potential to change someone's body composition more than most any other type of training though...
