Hotel Gym training
Machine OHP 5 sets
side laterals 3x12 30
cable front raises 3x10
ab work

4/23
night training straight off the plane

paused bench worked up to a smooth single at 365, wasn't easy but not a grinder. Max is right around 375 now which I will take given I haven't done much bench work since my meet nearly 3 months ago giving the bicep tendon a chance to heal up.

dips 3x15 bw
pushdowns 3x10 100

Saturday is 8 weeks out from meet day. Bulgarian method for benching starts Monday which is the beginning of serious meet training and a gradual tightening up of my diet over the next four weeks.
I love watching your numbers progress with that Bulgarian shit. Get it!

Good log man. I'm getting ready to do a Coan circuit on deads myself. Always good to see other people's numbers to get a little push.

Started a 12 week coan based training cycle, but my lifting partner steered us away from it by about week 8. It's like pulling teeth to keep him going on deadlift anyway. I think the speed lifts and the power shrugs bug him for some reason. I'm waiting for him to start ditching deadlift day and i'll go it on my own and see how it goes. I've been stuck at 565 for a single for a long while and was looking for something to nudge me over the edge.

The biggest problem is that my partner is a bench freak and his world revolves around that. I have finally got him to accept/like squatting, but his bench will remain above his dead until the switch flips in his head. Bench comes too easy for him and deadlift is on the other side. I know if i was benching 500 and deadlifting 425 i would be doing everything i could to flip those around, but different strokes for different folks i guess.

Coan is worth trying for a full run IMO. Even though I generally miss a few reps during the program my meet results have always been good after running it.

4/25
double overhand sumo pulls 5x225, 3x275, 2x325, 1x375, 1x425
bent rows 3x8 225
face pulls 10x90, 100, 110
ab pulldowns 15x120, 2x12 130

Since I did my regular deadlifting session on Monday instead of Tuesday this week I really should have done this session yesterday to give myself an extra day before next regular pulling session but I didn't think about it until after. Everything went smoothly so not making the adjustment shouldn't be a big deal.

4/27

paused bench 5x135, 5x185, 2x235, 1x285, 1x335, 1x360, 2x2 325
weighted dips 15x +45, 2x12 +90
tricep pushdowns 3x8 100
bb curls 10x95, 10x105, 9x115

First day of Bulgarian method benching. Will be benching 6 days per week (everyday but Tuesday) into the meet. Two slight changes from last go around. My plan is to work up to max double and a max triple once each week rather than max singles everyday.

The other thing I'm going to try to concentrate on is not getting pumped up for any reps during training. I find this tough to do as the weight gets heavier but it is the way the program is supposed to be run and I think the way it will prove most effective on meet day if I can pull it off.

I'm starting from at a higher top weight than I have ever done before which takes some of the pressure off to make big jumps. Below is today's 360.

If you are avoiding a pump (which makes sense) how long in between sets?

More trying to avoid using adrenalin during training than avoiding a pump. As low rep as I go benching using this method a pump really doesn't come into play. Most guys running the program seem to get a 5 to 10% boost over their training numbers on meet day where I have been right about the same on my meet days as I am during training at the end of the cycle. I think it is because I'm getting too much adrenalin going on training days so that when I get to meet day it isn't much different than a training day.

Rest between sets is relatively short for the first several sets, probably around 60 seconds. Gets longer the last couple, at least 2 minutes but I don't time. Add weight to the bar, take a drink of water and go when I'm ready.

Week 4 Coan Deadlift

Deads 2x315, 2x375, 1x425, 1x475, 2x520
"speed" deads 5x3 435

3 circuits
bent rows 8x225
underhand lat pulldowns 8x210
good mornings 8x165

I find week 4 of Coan to be the toughest. First rep at 520 moved pretty well while the 2nd rep was a bid of a grinder. Nothing "speedy" about the last three triples at 435, in fact they were a bit of a gut check and I was happy to get through all five sets.

Looking at this session on paper it doesn't seem that gut wrenching but it is.

4/29

paused bench 5x135, 5x185, 2x235, 1x285, 1x335, 1x365, 2x2 325
dumbbell OHP 3x10 60
rear delt raises 3x10 60
side laterals 3x10 30
ab pulldowns 2x15

365 moved much slower than I would have liked but went up. Based on how 360 went up on Monday I thought 365 would move a little faster than it did. I will be taking smaller jumps for a while until I get back in the groove of daily heavy benching.

4/30

paused bench 5x135, 5x185, 2x235, 2x285, 2x315, 2x335
squats 5 sets 15-8 top set was 8x255 (Right knee has been bothering me so stayed very light and higher rep
leg curls 2x12 90, 10x100
GHR's 16, 15

F'ing allergies were the worse they have been all spring today. Left 5 to 10 pds. in the tank on top bench double. My hamstrings knew I had worked out at the end of the session. Actually, felt better when I was done with this than when I started.
