5 weeks out from meet today. Have to get steadier on max effort bench. Strength will there to get 400 or maybe a few pounds more but only if form is solid.

So you deadlifted 490 for 2 with a hernia? That isn't something you see every day. Better you than me, but i hope it gets better.

I've had a hernia just above the belly for over 10 years which has never caused me any problems. This one just popped two weeks ago and had caused some issues but not pulling and everything seems to be getting better each day.

@Masters Power thanks for doing this log. I love power lifting and like to see how others train. Good luck with training and the meet.

Thanks for checking in BL. I kept written logs for over 25 years. Have to say I like keeping them online much better and so does my wife who was always getting after me to get rid of the old notebooks which I refuse to.

5/17
paused bench 5x155, 5x205, 2x255, 1x305, 1x350, 1x388, 2x2 350
spread eagle sit ups 3x15 +45

Yesterday's 387 press was an unbalanced ugly lift in which my ass also came off the bench. I was very disappointed in the effort. Decided I would go back to an old method of having my legs further out in front of the bench which keeps my knees below the level of my hips and prevents my ass from coming up. I got away from this method a few meets ago because I felt like I got a lot more leg drive with my legs closer to the bench and I had never been redlighted for butt coming up. Last meet on my final attempt I was redlighted for ass off the bench so when it happened again yesterday I figured it was time for a change. Was only planning to go around 375 to make sure I didn't miss but my final warm up single at 350 flew up so I decided to add a pound from yesterday and give it a shot at 388. VERY HAPPY with this press, solid from start to finish, pause was probably a bit longer than competition, steady all the way up. Increased the backoff doubles five pounds to 350 and both sets were strong. Solid day for sure.

5/18
paused bench 5x155,5x205, 2x255, 1x305, 1x350, 1x390, 2x2 350
dips 3x15 +45
tate presses 2x12 45
tricep pushdowns 15x80, 13x90, 11x100
bb curls 12x 95,105 10x115, 8x125

Moved my hands out one finger on each side today. Touched down a solid 2 inches lower than I wanted to my sternum on 390, was surprised it went up. Don't know that the wider grip played any role in the low touch down but I'm not screwing around with it anymore. Moved my hands back in for the backoff doubles at 350 and they were both really strong.

Pressing strength is the best it has ever been at this point even though I'm still 5 pounds below my paused max. That number will fall shortly. Pain is gone when pressing.

Awesome- faulting on your touch point and still getting it up (with no pain) means you are strong as fuck right now. Siked to see 425 at the meet!

Keep up the good work. I tried power shrugs today for the first time. Got the idea from your log. Thanks again

I will be happy to get anything 400+ on the books during a meet. Based on how things are going right now I think there is a very good chance of making it happen.

5/19
deads 1x345, 1x405, 1x465, 2x520
"speed" deads 3x3 430

power shrugs 2x5 385
stiff leg deads 2x5 255
bent rows 2x5 275
lat pulldowns 2x5 250

Had a setback tonight which hopefully won't amount to much. First rep at 520 was tough and I knew my only chance of getting the programmed double was to touch n go. Way out of position and should have just shut it down but grinded it out with a rounded back. As soon as I set the bar down I could feel an issue with the hernia as well as tweaking the lower back.

Got through the rest of the session okay. My back will be fine as it has gotten used to me pulling in poor form over the years. Hernia had been receding slightly over the past 10 days and the pain had gone away. It is now back out where it was when it went several weeks ago although thankfully it isn't as painful as it was then but I definitely know it is there and that I pissed it off.

Be safe!

The only excuse for pulling a doomed dead is hot chicks in the gym watching.

Not a lot of those in my basement and the one who does show up occasionally doesn't really care if I make a lift or not after 25 years of being around me.

It was more like I'm going to double this bitch no matter what. Not real smart when the no matter what causes an injury issue.

Assuming, the hernia gets better over the next week I won't be attempting the double at 545 that is programmed but instead will try to single it twice with maybe a 60 second rest between reps.

5/20
paused bench 5x155, 5x205, 2x255, 1x305, 1x350, 1x392, 2x350
dumbbell OHP's 2x10 50, 10x60, 9x60
side laterals 3x10 35
rear delt raises 3x10 60

392 was a grinder as yesterday's deadlifting session took something out of me. Only did one back off double at 350 as the grind on 392 obviously wore me down.

5/21
paused bench 5x155, 5x205, 3x255, 3x305, 3x335, 3x350
squats 12x135, 10x185, 8x225, 6x265, 4x285
leg curls 11x90, 10x100, 9x105
GHR's 2x15

Decided to do a max triple today instead of a single or double to keep the weight lower. If I had it to do again I would have gone straight from 305 to 350 as the 335 triple in between those sets took a little out of me making the last rep at 350 very slow.

Re aggravated hernia didn't bother me on squats but I kept them light to be safe as the chances I take between now and meet day will all be on my two competitive lifts.

What are GHR's? I am liking the power shrugs a lot. I always use too do strict form shrugs but I feel it more with the power shrugs in my traps. This log is helping me out a lot. Keep up the good work and thanks for posting

GHR=Glute Ham Raise. Not an easy movement to get form correct on and I still don't a lot of times but I have figured out how to get the tension where it is supposed to be on every rep.

Thanks for checking in and the kind words.
