Take Two- MP's Meet Training Log

5/23
paused bench 5x155, 5x205, 2x255, 1x305, 1x355, 1x390, 2x2 350
face pulls 10x90, 100, 110
bent rows 3x6 275

After not maxing for a couple of days backed the weight off a couple of pounds to 390. It didn't move as fast as I wanted but wasn't a grinder.

5/24
paused bench 5x155, 5x205, 2x255, 1x305, 1x355, 1x393, 2x2 350
pull throughs 2x12 120, 12x140, 10x150
GHR's 15, 14
spread eagle sit ups 3x15 +45

5/25
paused bench 5x155, 5x205, 2x255, 1x305, 1x355, 1x395, 2x2 355
dips 15x +45, 2x12 +90
tate presses 3x12 50
tricep pushdowns 3x12 100
bb curls 10x95, 105, 115 8x125

Pause would likely not have passed on the 395. Got a little nervous on the way down, thought I had a competition pause but when I watched it on video it was marginal at best. Good news it went up and wasn't an all out grinder. Upped the backoff doubles 5 pds. to 355.

5/26
deads 2x335, 1x405, 1x475, 1x535
"speed deads" 3x3 405
power shrugs 2x5 415
stiff leg deads 2x5 275
bent rows 2x5 275
lat pulldowns 2x5 250
good mornings 2x5 185

Backed off a little from what the program called for given the hernia issue and the fact that 475 felt heavier than it should have. 535 was pretty well an all out effort. Not bas considering it is a stiff bar and in the past I've been good for between 20 and 30 pounds more with the deadlift bar.

Decent session but the best news was the hernia caused no issues during or after the session so I feel comfortable it shouldn't be an issue at all for the meet.

5/27
paused bench 5x155, 5x205, 2x255, 1x305, 1x355, 1x390, 2x350
side laterals 3x10 35
front raises 3x10 35
rear delt raises 3x10 50

Like last week the pulling session seemed to take something out of me. Working up 355 didn't move near as fast as it should have so I backed off and only did 390 for the top set. It was a clean rep but wasn't particularly strong. Only did one backoff double at 355 and kept the shoulder accessory workload light.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the support.

Doc, the good news is approaching 50 there isn't a lot of competition in my category at most meets. Basically I compete against the numbers on PL watch for my weight class in the masters division.

I think the better news is that while approaching 50 you still have the discipline to do PLing style workouts. I can only hope to last as long in this sport as you have.

As you well know Doc there are plenty of injuries and other set backs along the way that you have to work through. I've ended up not doing a couple of different meets in the past several years because training wasn't going well enough and small injuries seemed to be getting worse.

I wouldn't say that I play it safe but I've become pretty in tune with what my body can work through and when it is time to back off in order to avoid a serious injury.

5/28
paused bench 5x155, 5x205, 2x255, 1x305, 1x355, 1x395, 2x2 355
squats 12x135, 10x185, 10x225, 7x2765, 5x305
leg curls 12x90, 10x100, 9x110

Top warm up single at 355 didn't move as fast as it should have but I was determined to get at least 395 on the top single so that is what I went for. Ugly off balance rep, on the plus side I was able to gut it out and locked it out.

I'll post the video later for @brutus79 because it does show the bench as done by powerlifters is a fully body movement as I think everything but my pecker was involved in locking the rep out.

Hahahahahahahah. Classic line. Everything but the pecker was involved in locking it out lmao.

Brutus came up by me to be wined and dined and i began showing him a few different setups styles but we only got to work on it for a little while. If you can help him out he would definitely benefit. I think he's leaving at least 15-20lbs on the bar with his current setup (no offense Brut, just trying to get you to crush that 415 brother :))

Is there any real advantage to thumbs behind bar versus thumbs around bar on the bench press? I use thumbs behind bar on front/rear BB presses only . ~Ogh

Thumbs behind bar makes it easier to get the bar over the center of the wrist/forearm. It makes force transfer more linear and thus can help with the weight you put up and saving your elbows. Anyone should be able to use the thumbs around grip though and get the same result. You just need to work on the way you grip the bar. Plus you get an added safety benefit

Thanks Doc - Ive used it for close grip benches but never really heavy stuff . Gonna play with it next bench day ...

Doc hit it on the head on all counts. False grip is so engrained now that it would take quite a while for me to get comfortable with full grip. I press in the rack to avoid any false grip disasters.
