President Trump’s Laughable Plan to Cut His Own Taxes

As a rule, Republican presidents like offering tax cuts, and President Trump is no different. But the skimpy one-page tax proposal his administration released on Wednesday is, by any historical standard, a laughable stunt by a gang of plutocrats looking to enrich themselves at the expense of the country’s future.

Two of Mr. Trump’s top lieutenants — Steven Mnuchin and Gary Cohn, both multimillionaires and former Goldman Sachs bankers — trotted out a plan that would slash taxes for businesses and wealthy families, including Mr. Trump’s, in the vague hope of propelling economic growth. So as to not seem completely venal, they served up a few goodies for the average wage-earning family, among them fewer and lower tax brackets and a higher standard deduction.

The proposal was so empty of illustrative detail that few people could even begin to calculate its impact on their pocketbooks. Further, depending on where they live, some middle-class families might not benefit much or at all, because the plan does away with important deductions like those for state and local taxes.

As to the rationale offered up by Mr. Mnuchin and Mr. Cohn, even many conservative economists believe that the argument that tax cuts will pay for themselves, by increasing investment and creating jobs, is the same supply-side fantasy that has repeatedly been proved wrong. This durable nonsense would instead add mightily to a federal debt that Americans will be paying off for generations to come.

People don't understand what they are doing by allowing the reds to cut taxes on the wealthy. They have most of the money and dont pay their fair share. They are mortgageing their children and grandchildren's future.

Before long the debt will be similar to the way it was after ww2. The only way we got out of that was with a 90% tax bracket. Kennedy cut it to around 75% I believe, and Reagan cut it to 28%. But many pay even much less with tax loopholes. Romney paid 13% and mr t paid zero for many years.

This country is going to be so fucked in the not so distant future.

Bills have to be paid, and trumps idea of handling debt is to negotiate to pay off a percentage of the debt, say 50%.

He can't do that as president. He had no problem stiffing his creditors and contractors in Atlantic City, but the USA is not a casino.

People think trump is a great business person, but refuse to consider he has had multiple bankruptcies. He is a flim flam man and nothing else. People voted for him because of a facade he has constructed.

Herbet Hoover was a businessman as well. He tanked the world economy.

As Fox News is roiled by lawsuits and the ouster of Bill O’Reilly, the network’s co-president Bill Shine has retained the backing of the Murdochs. On Monday, Rupert Murdoch took network co-presidents Shine and Jack Abernethy to lunch at Marea, a seafood restaurant near Fox’s midtown headquarters — a highly public show of support.

But privately, Shine is expressing concern about his future at the network. According to three sources briefed on the conversations, Shine has told friends he recently asked Rupert’s sons James and Lachlan — the CEO and co-chairman, respectively, of network parent company 21st Century Fox — to release a statement in support of him, but they refused to do so. The sources said Shine made the request because of withering press coverage of Fox News in recent weeks. A source added that Shine has privately complained that Rupert “isn’t fighting for him” in the press, which is why he wanted explicit support from the sons.
