I've still got my dad's plumbers and pipefitters union jacket. It's more like a windbreaker though. A couple years back I saw a guy walking in the rain wearing the same one and picked him up. He was drunk and on his way to get more booze. I told him I picked him up because I saw the union logo on his jacket and it turned out he'd worked some jobs with my dad like 20 years ago. I gave him a ride to the liquor store and back home. Small world sometimes.
Plumbers and Fitters work hard and party hard. Local 638 Fitters of NYC have a slogan "We're drunk, We're late, We're 638" lol in NYC the plumbers and the Fitters don't get along because their separate locals. If you know the history of the Fitters. Most of their work was Plumbers work that we gave to them because we dealt with Lead and Oakum Drain and Waste pipe and that was a lot of work in the buildings. So we gave them refrigeration and sprinklers. I was originally a 638 Boiler Technicians Helper and that's true steamfitters work.
Then with the plumbers I became a gas fitter and anything over 3inch diameter steel gas pipe has to be welded so I became a welders pimp. I use to work 50ft in the air on a scissor lift with 300lb lengths of steel pipe. I would have to drill all the hangers and me and the welder would hoist the pipe in the air and lay it on the hangar for him to weld. I also use to work with 3-4ft pipe wrenches. I know how to bevel steel pipe ends, I know how to thread by hand and by the rigid 300 machine and I use tack weld for the welder before he would fill the gaps.
Definitely interesting work. I also worked on No Hun Stacks, Copper risers, framing, crotons and I worked in a Union fabrication factory that would fabricate shower bodies and risers for big jobs.
I only know the stories my dad told me. He saw a lot of crazy shit in his 40 or so years in the union. Gunfights with scabs, guys getting patched up by veterinarians, etc. You guys would probably have a lot to talk about. I can only do the most basic cutting, welding and grinding myself. Was too busy to learn until he was too sick to teach, I really regret that now.
Got my journeymen in 2011 and I've been making six figures ever since.
I have had to chase work a little.
Moved 2x in the last 5 years but that's more to do with the economy. Once you have that license no one can take it from you and you're TOP PAY!
Good luck bro!

My grand father was the treasurer for the ILA long shoremen union. He was a gangster. He never told many stories but my mother and uncle told a few.I only know the stories my dad told me. I like Macdonald's shakes better
If you don't mind me asking how did you get injured? Why are you waiting so long for surgery?
Fuck bro. Hope everything works out for you. Good luckLast May was having what I thought was kidney pain turned out to be a 1 inch gallstone.
It's so bad you can't even train?Last May was having what I thought was kidney pain turned out to be a 1 inch gallstone.
Last May was having what I thought was kidney pain turned out to be a 1 inch gallstone. Waiting so long cuz the health care system has bumped me twice as it's not a "life threatening" problem. Smh I guarantee any surgeon that had to go through constant debilitating pain would have had the surgery same day lol
