Sea ice shrinks in step with carbon emissions
Sea ice shrinks in step with carbon emissions | Science

The jet fuel you burned on that flight from New York City to London? Say goodbye to 1 square meter of Arctic sea ice.

Since at least the 1960s, the shrinkage of the ice cap over the Arctic Ocean has advanced in lockstep with the amount of greenhouse gases humans have sent into the atmosphere, according to a study published this week in Science. Every additional metric ton of carbon dioxide (CO2) puffed into the atmosphere appears to cost the Arctic another 3 square meters of summer sea ice—a simple and direct observational link that has been sitting in data beneath scientists' noses. “It's really basic,” says co-author Dirk Notz, a sea ice expert at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany. “In retrospect, it sounds like something someone should have done 20 years ago.”

If both the linear relationship and current emission trends hold into the future, the study suggests the Arctic will be ice free by 2045—far sooner than some climate models predict. The study suggests that those models are underestimating how warm the Arctic has already become and how fast that melting will proceed. And it gives the public and policymakers a concrete illustration of the consequences of burning fossil fuels, says Edward Maibach, director of the Center for Climate Change Communication at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. “Concrete information is always more engaging than abstract information,” he says.

Arctic sea ice is retreating rapidly, raising prospects of a future ice-free Arctic Ocean during summer.

Since climate-model simulations of the sea-ice loss differ substantially, we here use a robust linear relationship between monthly-mean September sea-ice area and cumulative CO2 emissions to infer the future evolution of Arctic summer sea ice directly from the observational record.

The observed linear relationship implies a sustained loss of 3 ± 0.3 m2 of September sea-ice area per metric ton of CO2 emission.

Based on this sensitivity, Arctic sea-ice will be lost throughout September for an additional 1000 Gt of CO2 emissions.

Most models show a lower sensitivity, which is possibly linked to an underestimation of the modeled increase in incoming longwave radiation and of the modeled Transient Climate Response.

Trump Picks Top Climate Skeptic to Lead EPA Transition
Choosing Myron Ebell means Trump plans to drastically reshape climate policies.
Trump Picks Top Climate Skeptic to Lead EPA Transition

Donald Trump has selected one of the best-known climate skeptics to lead his U.S. EPA transition team, according to two sources close to the campaign.

Myron Ebell, director of the Center for Energy and Environment at the conservative Competitive Enterprise Institute, is spearheading Trump’s transition plans for EPA, the sources said.

According to the current best estimate, by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), if humans carry on with a “business as usual” approach using large amounts of fossil fuels, the Earth’s average temperature will rise by between 2.6 and 4.8 degrees above pre-industrial levels by 2100.

However new research by an international team of experts who looked into how the Earth’s climate has reacted over nearly 800,000 years warns this could be a major under-estimate.

In a paper in the journal Science Advances, the actual range could be between 4.78C to 7.36C by 2100, based on one set of calculations.

Some have dismissed the idea that the world would continue to burn fossil fuels despite obvious global warming, but emissions are still increasing despite a 1C rise in average thermometer readings since the 1880s.

Professor Michael Mann, of Penn State University in the US, who led research that produced the famous “hockey stick” graph showing how humans were dramatically increasing the Earth’s temperature, said the new paper appeared "sound and the conclusions quite defensible".

“And it does indeed provide support for the notion that a Donald Trump presidency could be game over for the climate,” he wrote in an email.

Global mean surface temperatures are rising in response to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. The magnitude of this warming at equilibrium for a given radiative forcing—referred to as specific equilibrium climate sensitivity (S)—is still subject to uncertainties.

We estimate global mean temperature variations and S using a 784,000-year-long field reconstruction of sea surface temperatures and a transient paleoclimate model simulation.

Our results reveal that S is strongly dependent on the climate background state, with significantly larger values attained during warm phases.

Using the Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 for future greenhouse radiative forcing, we find that the range of paleo-based estimates of Earth’s future warming by 2100 CE overlaps with the upper range of climate simulations conducted as part of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5).

Furthermore, we find that within the 21st century, global mean temperatures will very likely exceed maximum levels reconstructed for the last 784,000 years.

On the basis of temperature data from eight glacial cycles, our results provide an independent validation of the magnitude of current CMIP5 warming projections.

I'd gladly give up 5 to 10 degrees global warming for more jobs, better paying and better Healthcare. polar bears will have to shed some hair and learn to roller skate instead of ice skate. when in rome.

Why do you think its one or the other? You have brought into the false narrative that somehow by having clean air and clean water interferes with having jobs. We have tons of coal fired power plants in my state. They run on skeleton crews. Projections of that massive pipeline from Canada to the United States only shows thousands of full-time jobs. The oil and gas boom in this country has been great because it has provided thousands of good paying jobs. something that we desperately need.

One major drawback, almost all that oil and gas is sold on the open market. you know what that means? that means we will possibly and in many cases have definitely ruined aquifers and watersheds so India and China can buy our finished product. Yay for China and India! why don't you look at pictures of downtown China ,downtown India, mexico city, Indonesia, they can't fucking breathe the air is so toxic from all the pollution. You're willing to be like them?? Don't you have kids? Isnt it our duty to take care of this planet not only for us but for our families future generations? You know how we could keep all those jobs without ruining the water and air and still keep people employed?

Wind, solar, and water power. it's always there you don't ruin the fucking earth by using it and there jobs That can't be exported to China. done. Good paying American jobs. We're never 100% going to get away from oil and there are responsible companies out there but time and history has shown us that the majority of them are concerned with the bottom line. and then that's when we have situations like the golf of Mexico that's when we have situations like in my home state where the fucking rivers are poison from all the arsenic from all the Olding mining operations. Is that really a future that you want ? I pray that you were joking?

Not even in office yet and Canada may potentially be getting fucked in the ass already.

What Trump's climate change denial means for Canada
Man, I think Americans are just tired of paying the bill for everyone in the world including those that just walk across our border. America would undoubtedly be stuck with half the world's bill when it comes to climate change. is it real? who the fuck knows. it's the liberals pushing this shit. yeah, they have all this data, but some of which they get caught lying about which tarnishes their whole cause. the liberals are always pushing an agenda and lying about everything and to that I say "take your fucking climate change that you wanna get rich off of and shove it". all the time you lie about some of it and some of the time you lie about all of it. can't trust a liberal for anything. nasa came out and apologized because their numbers were bullshit a few years back. the emails of the top climate change scientists where they were talking about they couldn't let the truth out. actually emailing each other telling one another to lie about climate change. so in all seriousness... Wtf can you believe? how about you worry about your countries pollution and we'll worry about ours and the folks that will just keep on polluting would have anyways even after they got us for a few billion dollars.

Yeah I guess you right brother. Just curious how does a "bill" matter if mother nature ends mankind ? ;)
As for America paying any bill for the "rest of the world". Your economy wouldn't be surviving without those other countries. How much money have you borrowed again?

Obama borrowed 20 trillion dollars to pay for those shovel ready jobs that never existed.

The instance your speaking about with the climate scientest falsifying data was proved to be bullshit. Its not all the liberals either. Im not a liberal and I dont have to be a scientist to see our climate has changed drastically. All of it has to do with our greenhouse gas emissions. Every year its hotter with less rain. My family are ranchers bro. We see it first hand. There were record numbers of crops that failed last year from lack of rain. Most people who live in the citys dont see it. They are disconnected. Its real and its here.

Hmmm I never said scientist are making false reports dude. I also agree it doesn't take a genius to know it's happening. Our local ski Mtns are getting less and less snow every winter. Just one simple example...
