Meso Powerlifting Corner

Exactly. When i trained core regularly my squat and deadlift went up. When i stopped completely my squat and deadlift still went up. I don't think any of that matters unless you're sub 10% BF trying to step on a stage and make your abs pop a little more. I'm not doing anything I don't need to do in the gym myself. Like forearms and calves, haven't done either in years.

I dont really do forearms anymore, i figure i do enough pulling and dont use straps that i dont really need to.

I do hit calves 3 times a week though, i dont really need to i think my calves are pretty killer, but i have a weird phobia of ending up being the small calves guy so i just do it anyways hahaha.

I've never done a bit of grip training either and i am the small calves guy, lol. People probably think i don't do legs.

I'm always baffled by these guys that say they can pull 100lbs more with straps. I think i can grip 100lbs more than i can pull.

No im sure thats true.....for people who train with straps regularly, bodybuilders and such, but i reckon once you've gotten used to grippin/pullin with just your bare hands, or in Rodgerthats case his bear hands(i know i know im hysterical), it doesnt have such a dramatic impact.

Saying they can pull more is misleading, if they can pull x amount of weights with straps they can pull it without straps, they just havent built up the grip strength.

I know all that, i just wish i could pull 700+ with straps. :(

I don't see why everyone doesn't do hookgrip, honestly that has probably been one of my best moves in my training. I can stay DOH for reps at 405 then I g to hookgrip pas that and now that I've been doing it for 4ish months I have absolutely zero issues with it, never used tape just built up the callus required and boom pulled my max at my meet hookgripped which also had the commentator saying something as you don't see many 500+ pulls hook. I think everyone should give it a go and make a
Revolution in pulling

I'll race you to 700 ;) Which is kind of a bold challenge considering I haven't even officially done 600 yet. Lol. I was just doing 5 rep sets of 465 pretty easily beltless. I'm not going to be surprised if at my meet in December I blow 600 out of the water. I sure hope so at least. The record for 198 in the junior raw is 605. So I'm shooting for around 620. The bench is only 365 also, so hopefully I can do a good 385. That would be a hell of a way to do my first meet. Break a couple state records.

My thumbs don't like hook grip.

Challenge accepted. I might start up a thread at some point, I know at least one other member that will be down with this.

I pulled a little over 600lbs in the 198 class last month. Taking about 8-10 weeks off deadlift right now, so I'll be a little behind.

Ive been screwing around with it a little bit here and there. My only concern is my thumb being pulled out of the socket, ever happen to you?

Well, at least I'll get a head start. Lol. That makes me feel a little better.

Hookgrip isn't for guys with small hands. I'm not sure I would use it anyway as I've never had any grip issues. Unfortunately my grip in stronger than my pull it appears. :(

I think we're about the same height and weight, I've got ten years on you though. This challenge might be a year or two in completing.

Im 5'9, unless you ask any woman I have been with, I'm the worlds shortest 6'0 male. Yeah, I'm pretty young. No matter what I'm doing 700 by the end of 2017. Even if I die trying. Ha!

That's way way way too often and very counterproductive. Build strength, don't test it. I maxed three times this entire year, twice at meets and once in the gym doing a mock meet.

Also, I'm not convinced conventional core work has any carryover to squat and deadlift. I did zero direct core work for months leading into my meet and pulled over 600lbs. Maybe stuff like very heavy weighted planks, but crunches and leg raises are going to be useless for what we're looking for.

Anyway, I hope I'm not coming off as a dick. I have had an awful week, but I'm just trying to save you from wasting your time. I literally made all the mistakes I'm telling you about right now.
Nah man, not at all. I appreciate everything. And ik it's too often. I'm undisciplined when it comes to the numbers. Ik I should look for rep PRs, but idk man, I like verification that what I'm doing is working. I need to stop it. A lot of it has been "well I fixed this that was wrong, now let's test my max"

As for core, I don't do anything right now, other than the obvious squat a nd DL. But RT mentioned it and it seemed like a valid concern. Unless he just meant learning to brace better, which is also valid.

its core development and bracing, they aren't independent of one another and they compliment eachother nicely. Proper bracing will build you a ironclad core and a strong core will improve your bracing. Doing it properly and lifting heavy without going above what you can brace for is the key. So say your form breaks down at 465 well then I'd say work in the 405-435 range building the core strength up. A proper lifting belt 10mm or 13mm 4" will help as well as it teaches you how to brace properly as you must do so to engage your body against the belt. Take a big breath in with your belly then brace as if your pushing out a 5lb log that's a stably fcking position right there I'll tell ya that for free. It's coming but I fear with how strong you are getting and how quick you are going to wind up with an injury if you don't follow the trusted system and build strength as opposed to testing your strength
