Odie's First Log

This is why I recommended you read, reread, and re-reread the rulebook for the federation you plan on competing in. Different Feds have different rules and some will absolutely nitpick every single detail no matter how minor it may seem to you or I. There's nothing worse than having a lift taken away from you for a stupid technical error that's easily fixed. Not waiting on commands, lifting your butt, etc EXCEPT maybe bombing out.

And I'm done. Caught 2 damn sting rays which I let die on the shore, 1 flounder and a 29.5'' red

That's a iPhone 5s

why didn't you eat the stingrays?

I would think Odie should try some one and two RM's with butt on bench . No back arching . Now whats your best one RM ?

Back arching is allowed in powerlifting and as one gets closer and closer to a meet specificity is an extremely important fsctor to consider. He's not close to the meet yet I don't think so it's not important as it would be 4-6wks out for example

But he should fully know his bench limits now , true ? Dead bench , no arch vs Flat bench back arched , whats the difference in lifts ?

He should have a good idea of his current max, with butt on the bench, yes but it's really irrelevant whether he arches the back or not. It should be dependent on which way he plans on benching at the meet to be honest.

Sorry Odie, don't mean to talk about you like you're not here :p

Ive got about a 20-30lb difference in my "dead bench" and w/ back arched +30lbs.

Im use to back arching on my bench working sets so thats what Im more comfortable with . But I do dead type benches on all my warm-ups .

Is there a reason you choose to dead benches during your warm ups, as opposed to doing them all the same?

For me, I like to get as much practice as I can, to refine my technique. That means every rep, whether it be warm ups or working sets, I try to do exactly the same way. I do this with all my lifts.

I hope you don't mind the chatter in your log, Odie.

Sure there will be differences in each but you want to use the one that allows you to lift the most weight while staying within the rules of the federation. In some Feds for example, you're not allowed to move your feet at all. If your foot skips and moves the lift doesn't count. In my fed, as long as some part of the foot remains in contact with the ground it doesn't matter what the feet do or how much they move. Some Feds don't allow a thumbless/suicide grip on the bench whereas mine does.

I think Odies cool w/ gym talk . But yes I can be a post-pig...;)

I do bench press two distinct ways , warm-ups are dead style and then I arch my back for heavy weights . Thats just how I do it , and I think it sends a message to my body that the big stuff is coming up....

So your saying that is legal but this is not? WTF

By the way I can easily do 8 reps of 405 before my ass starts coming off the bench now. Its when I go over 435 that I start getting sloppy.

Your bench would get red lights Odie. The good news is that with a little work on your setup and form you could easily add 5-15lbs to your max relatively easily :)

I still don't see it fellas. Yes I understand that certain positions can make it a bit easier to get the weight up but after reviewing my video I think Im actually making it harder then it really is.

A simple test would be try the same weight without the bridging and see which is easier. Regardless of what your results turn out to be, the butt must always remain in contact with the bench during the entire lift on meet day b
