Strongman Thread

Farmers should be between 15-20m super heavy... Like 1.5 bodyweight a hand

40-60m heavy, 1 bodyweight per hand

Or 75-100m at less than bodyweight, or max distance in 60/75/90 seconds.

From what I've read...

The price is insane! I would love to make a set of stones myself... Mostly large, some with lighter material in middle and some heavier.

Practice the technique at various weights but on physically large stones.

So very expensive, though.

I am trying a diy hack to make them a bit cheaper using plastic globes meant for lights. I saw it online... I'm not sure if it'll work or not, I'll post my experience when I finish them. The only drawback is that the globes will essentially be destroyed after making one stone... Which is probably okay because you don't need more than one of the same weight.

I know everyone situation is a little different,
But u can get the 20 inch slater mold we used for $145.

This makes a 330 lb stone , and u can make foam inserts to lighten the stone accordingly. I think slater even sells them.

I'm a rookie at stones but 330 is a heavy bitch , and I imagine is a good size for just about any amateur athlete to train with.

That's a good point... Or add lead inserts if you're not a pussy. :D

$145 isn't bad but if you want a selection of 4 or 5 different stones, it adds up quick. It never occurred to me to get the foam inserts to make stones at various weights.

I would like 16", 18" and 20" stones... But you're talking quite a bit of cash to get all those... Especially shipped to UK!

Finally someone started a thread on this!
I've always trained a little strongman in with my PL.

Lots of carries-Zercher with a barbell, overhead barbell walks, farmer's..

Built my own cement Husafell stone, have light atlas stones, only going up to 175 right now, but that's because they are more for technique training and clean and pressing them lol.

Simulated yoke walks and car deadlifts in the cage...

Strongman training is all about creativity.. Buying and building equipment yourself is great, but so is just simulating the movements in any other way.

Here's what I'm working with.

Fuck those tires! Every time I mess with em I hurt my bicep, so I'm done.

I hit the sled once maybe twice per week. Don't add much weight, usually 35's.

The red things are what I do farmer's with. Been hit those 6 times per week. I'm up to 25lbs on each end.

They weigh 120lbs plus 50 puts me at 170 so I need another 50 to have my bw in each hand. Only have about 20yds to work with. Been doing 4 - 5 sets ED, one set is down 20yds and back 20. Trying to get @Perrin Aybara type of grip strength.

Wish I had access to those for farmer's walks. Only used them once. You got a yoke around you can use?

All you guys interested in strongman should join the FB group Starting Strongman. People post up vids of comps, training, the online qualifiers for WSM are on there, and tons of contests and comps posted by gyms and federations. It's pretty decent...

Great thread! I'll be following. I thought rogue had atlas stone molds... I'll have to take a look again.

They do and they also sell the slater molds on their website. I can't remember for sure which were cheaper but I want to say the slater's were because that's the ones we ended up getting.

FB is not for me. I wanna give those BB over head walks you were talking about a try. I've been working on my OHP and shoulder mobility a lot, they both suck....bad.

The technique for cleaning the log is the big difference, especially the larger diameter ones.

I learned the hard way you can't snatch big weight around the way you do with a barbell.
Yeah no kidding. Ive never had any weightlifting experience or techique but one time a year or two back i missed a 405 FS attempt and was so mad i didnt want to unrack the weights to lift it back up to the pegs to redo. So i figured in my fit of rage i would just clean it up and repeg the bar with 405 on it. I got it in motion but was totally unready for the bars descent, lol.
It was real ugly. I basically turned a "clean" in to a upright row mixed with a reverse curl and a little hip kip.
Gotta respect it. I assume theres a whole lot of technique im totally ignorant too.
Wont do again. Pretty careless of me

Yeah, I get it about FB. It's just cool to see the online qualifiers for WSM. One of them is total tonnage in 30 seconds. Watched guys banging out AMRAP in 30 seconds of 600-700lb deads is pretty motivating lol.

Yeah, the hardest part of the overhead BB walks is the turn. Inertia. The BB wants to keep spinning when you turn. Sometimes I'll bring the bar back down to my chest, then turn, and split jerk it back overhead to walk back...

They look nice, Dog.

I was just about to ask who uses a prowler...
What do you do for power/conditioning... I want to be working my (shit) anaerobic threshold.
Any guesses on weights, distance, reps for that? I weigh 144 of fat moderately strong fucker.

Ever worry about hyperextending the knee while stepping in a divot or not flexing properly? Think of the leg bending 90° in the opposite direction like that chick that broke her leg in the leg sled...

Na.. the grass is relatively solid.

It's pretty easy to stay tight the whole time too. You tend to shuffle your legs moreso than picking them up and walking.

I only push it. Same distance as the farmer's, about 20yds, 2 or 3 sets once maybe twice a week. Sometimes I sprint with it, most of the time it's a slow stretching walk. Not real sure how much it weighs. It's not made very well. A 35 on each post is as heavy as I have went with it. It's a pain in the ass to turn the fucker around. The runway isn't very wide.

If others are in the gym it's to difficult to use.
