New York Plans to Ban Sale of Big Sizes of Sugary Drinks

The sale of any cup or bottle of sweetened drink larger than 16 fluid ounces — about the size of a medium coffee, and smaller than a common soda bottle — would be prohibited under the first-in-the-nation plan, which could take effect as soon as next March.

The measure would not apply to diet sodas, fruit juices, dairy-based drinks like milkshakes, or alcoholic beverages; it would not extend to beverages sold in grocery or convenience stores.

The ban would not apply to drinks with fewer than 25 calories per 8-ounce serving, like zero-calorie Vitamin Waters and unsweetened iced teas, as well as diet sodas.

Restaurants, delis, movie theater and ballpark concessions would be affected, because they are regulated by the health department. Carts on sidewalks and in Central Park would also be included, but not vending machines or newsstands that serve only a smattering of fresh food items.

At fast-food chains, where sodas are often dispersed at self-serve fountains, restaurants would be required to hand out cup sizes of 16 ounces or less, regardless of whether a customer opts for a diet drink. But free refills — and additional drink purchases — would be allowed.

So, Aspartame, Sucralose, and Saccharin are OK,
just no Real sugars?

Not sure how other states are, but they are
pushing Anti-Smoking commercials like crazy up here.

"new york city is not about wringing your hands, its about doing something." " i thnk thats what the public wants the mayor to do." lets put it to a vote. what does tom think?
"mr bloomburgs proposal requires the approval of the board of health, a step that is considered likely because the members are all apointed by him."
"but many of the measure adopted in new york have become models for other cities..."

"your arguement, i guess, could be that its a little less convienient to have to carry two 16 ounce drinks to your seat in the movie theater rather than one 32 ounce." "he also said he foresaw no adverse effect on local bussiness, and he suggested that resturants could simply charge more for smaller drinks if their sales were to drop." so its just a pain in the ass that costs too much.

maybe this is really brilliant. its job creation. someone has to enforce these new laws, hear the arguements against and make it law anyway, licenses, regulations, fines and taxes, more production for whatever your drinking it out of, more trash for trash men, blah blah blah, all without addressing any real problem.

i respectfully disagree. education is the key, not government intervention. not to mention it opens all sorts of doors for an even bigger brother and his special interests.
what is the message and who is delivering it. im applauding neither.
anyone else?

but ill also have a jumbo popcorn with butter and foot long hotdog, along with my 3 little soda bottles... for now.

Brillant if you want more gub-r-mint. Big, Large, Jumbo Size... Government!!

This stuff is making me sick!!! I dont even drink soda anymore, but stay the f....k out of my personal life!!! It's okay with these dipshits if you want to wear a helmet with a six pack of Budweiser strapped to it and a funnel running into your pie hole, but no Pepsi,,,uh, uh! Nope! Maybe that's where the freak'n jobs are. You go out and crash your car all blitz-faced and now you employ the body shop, the ER, the doctors, the lawyer...and on and on and on (puke!)

Yeah, like getting people to clean
up after their nasty dogs, when they walk them.
or making a law for barking dogs after dark.

They stink, they bark at anything, they shit
all over .. Did I mention they stink?

Seriously, if you want a K-9, get a damn Wolf.

No Evidence For Nutritively Sweetened Beverage Consumption and Body Weight

Mattes RD, Shikany JM, Kaiser KA, Allison DB. Nutritively sweetened beverage consumption and body weight: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized experiments. Obes Rev 2011;12(5):346-65. Nutritively Sweetened Beverage Consumption and Body Weight: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Experiments

Nutritively sweetened beverages (NSBs) may play a role in the obesity epidemic. We abstracted data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and evidence-based reviews through January 2009 concerning effects of consumption of NSBs on changes in body weight and adiposity. Studies included were those (i) conducted in humans; (ii) lasting at least 3 weeks; (iii) incorporating random assignment of subjects to conditions that differed only in the consumption of NSBs and (iv) including an adiposity indicator as an outcome. Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis of six studies that added NSBs to persons' diets showed dose-dependent increases in weight. Contrarily, meta-analysis of studies that attempted to reduce NSB consumption consistently showed no effect on body mass index (BMI) when all subjects were considered. Meta-analysis of studies providing access to results separately for subjects overweight at baseline showed a significant effect of a roughly 0.35 standard deviations lesser BMI change (i.e. more weight loss or less weight gain) relative to controls. The current evidence does not demonstrate conclusively that NSB consumption has uniquely contributed to obesity or that reducing NSB consumption will reduce BMI levels in general. We recommend an adequately powered RCT with overweight persons, for whom there is suggestive evidence of an effect.

Its the giant multi-national corporations that are out of control.
They finance the electorial process and even write the laws often.
Think about it befor its too late. :(

Who allows the 'Big Money' to do this? The Whitehouse and Congress have the power to put this in check, but they don't. That is why Government is out of control. The corporations wield influence, but our politicians have their hand out. Government, politicians, are running wild and loose and until we stop putting the wealth and power seekers in office, it ain't gonna change. The political 'hunger' for wealth and power will always one-up what is best for us,'The People'

It's all about who's ox is being gored!! Attia is for government, but he is against government. One or the other man! He thinks government policy making is okay as long as it doesn't get to his 'Red Meat'. The problem with people and the government is they have forgotten what the role of government is...Period...

Government is supposed to protect the people. Not direct our lives. What we say, what we watch, what we eat, what we wear, what we drive. That my friend is none of the governments business. If you dont care if they moderate the sugary drinks...your 'red meat' just may be next. Today, it looks like they are moving in on popcorn and milk shakes, no less! Absolutely out of control.

i didnt get the impression hes for the govt it its in his flavor, but against if its not. but then again it does say "then and only then can we have a discussion about the policy implication." guess theres got to be rules and laws, food included. theres just so many and thats what a big brother would want. so you have someone to look to.
there was a post or mention of a fax tax oversees i believe.
this would tie into health insurance i think in that obesity is so costly. who pays. now i dont even really know that answer.
what is the job of the goverment. i asked myself this not too long ago and came up with the same answer. to protect the rights of the people.
