Trump Timeline ... Trumpocalypse

The consequences of NOT having a secure southern border are far more expensive in the longer run - a border wall is a bargain.
Maintenance costs will far exceed initial construction in less then 7 years. This wall is a joke, something ego driven bu a little man. Lets not forget any import tax will be felt in our own pockets as prices will be driven through the roof to cover that tax.

President Trump signed an executive order on Friday that purports to bar for at least 90 days almost all permanent immigration from seven majority-Muslim countries, including Syria and Iraq, and asserts the power to extend the ban indefinitely.

But the order is illegal. More than 50 years ago, Congress outlawed such discrimination against immigrants based on national origin.

That decision came after a long and shameful history in this country of barring immigrants based on where they came from. Starting in the late 19th century, laws excluded all Chinese, almost all Japanese, http://library.uwb.edu/Static/USimmigration/1917_immigration_act.html all Asians in the so-called Asiatic Barred Zone. Finally, in 1924, Congress created a comprehensive “national-origins system,” skewing immigration quotas to benefit Western Europeans and to exclude most Eastern Europeans, almost all Asians, and Africans.

Mr. Trump appears to want to reinstate a new type of Asiatic Barred Zone by executive order, but there is just one problem: The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 http://library.uwb.edu/Static/USimmigration/1965_immigration_and_nationality_act.html all discrimination against immigrants on the basis of national origin, replacing the old prejudicial system and giving each country an equal shot at the quotas. In signing the new law, President Lyndon B. Johnson http://www.lbjlibrary.org/lyndon-baines-johnson/timeline/lbj-on-immigration that “the harsh injustice” of the national-origins quota system had been “abolished.”

Nonetheless, Mr. Trump asserts that he still has the power to discriminate, pointing to a 1952 law that allows the president the ability to “suspend the entry” of “any class of aliens” that he finds are detrimental to the interest of the United States.

With his executive action suspending the admission of refugees to the United States and temporarily halting the entry of citizens from a variety of Muslim countries, President Donald Trump made a quick down payment on a key campaign promise. He also set the U.S. on a disastrous course—one that threatens to weaken our national security and diminish American global leadership.

The order signed on Friday calls for a temporary ban on visas for individuals from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia; a 120-day suspension of the resettlement of all refugees; and an indefinite ban on the resettlement of Syrian refugees.

It is hard to find any real basis for this action. During the campaign, Trump made frequent, unfounded claims that we have a “dysfunctional immigration system” and that unknown people are pouring through our borders. But over the past decade and a half, U.S. immigration enforcement has improved vastly to the point where it bears scant resemblance to the system whose vulnerabilities were exposed on 9/11.

...

The executive order is also likely to erode trust in the government, which will set back law enforcement’s efforts to build stronger bridges to Muslim communities. Those ties, as FBI Director James Comey has pointed out, are essential to U.S. domestic counterterrorism.

In fact, Trump’s action has the potential to trigger violence by individuals who are already leaning toward extremism, including some with mental illness. There are more than a few people who experienced personal setbacks, including ones in which officialdom was involved, who interpreted their experience through the prism of the jihadist narrative and took violent action.

Does it need to be said again? Great countries don’t behave this way.

Bill Maher nailed it. The first week of Trump is like the last half hour of Goodfellas!

Bill Maher Unloads on Trump: ‘This Is About a Guy Who Never Brought a Woman to Orgasm’

Bill Maher was not pulling any punches Friday night.

During his monologue on the latest edition of HBO’s Real Time, the indisputable godfather of late-night political comedy tore into what he called President Trump’s “war on facts,” as well as his series of freedom-stripping executive orders—which he seems to be reveling in due to the ceremony and photo ops.

“He keeps holding [the executive orders] up after he signs them, like, ‘Look! Look mommy, I finished my coloring! Maybe we can put it on the refrigerator!’ The problem is, you know, executive orders are a real thing. When Obama did it he had the lawyers go over it, people knew what was happening in the departments. No one knows how these things are going to work! Nobody knows where the money’s coming from. They’re just signed tweets,” said Maher.

“[Trump’s] first week was—oh my god—it was like the last half-hour of Goodfellas, where Ray Liotta is coked out of his mind and doing ten things at once,” he continued. “He’s dropping off a trunk full of handguns, and he’s making spaghetti sauce, and helicopters are chasing him. It can’t really go on like this for four years, can it? I’m gonna lose my mind.”

The political satirist and late-night then focused on President Trump’s first-week delusions, including that 3-5 million people voted illegally for Hillary Clinton (not true), and that his Inauguration Day crowd was the largest ever (not even close).

President Trump’s executive orders on immigration, announced by the administration on Wednesday, include a plan to publicize purported crimes committed by undocumented immigrants in so-called “sanctuary cities.”

The aim is to pressure the many major cities and states that have already announced their unwillingness to cooperate with the administration’s increasingly hardline policies against undocumented immigrants. Because these communities have generally declined to task local law enforcement with enforcing federal immigration laws, they have come to be known as sanctuary cities.

For anyone familiar with Breitbart News under Stephen K. Bannon, it’s obvious that this new fear-mongering tactic comes straight from the playbook of the man who is now the chief strategist and senior counselor to the president. Bannon’s Breitbart has championed such hardline anti-immigrant ideas for years.

President Trump’s executive order closing the nation’s borders to refugees was put into immediate effect Friday night. Refugees who were in the air on the way to the United States when the order was signed were stopped and detained at airports.

The detentions prompted legal challenges as lawyers representing two Iraqi refugees held at Kennedy Airport filed a writ of habeas corpus early Saturday in the Eastern District of New York seeking to have their clients released. At the same time, they filed a motion for class certification, in an effort to represent all refugees and immigrants who they said were being unlawfully detained at ports of entry.

Mr. Trump’s order, which suspends entry of all refugees to the United States for 120 days, created a legal limbo for individuals on the way to the United States and panic for families who were awaiting their arrival.

Mr. Trump’s order also stops the admission of refugees from Syria indefinitely, and it bars entry into the United States for 90 days from seven predominantly Muslim countries linked to concerns about terrorism. Those countries are Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.

It was unclear how many refugees and immigrants were being held nationwide in the aftermath of the executive order. The complaints were filed by a prominent group including the American Civil Liberties Union, the International Refugee Assistance Project at the Urban Justice Center, the National Immigration Law Center, Yale Law School’s Jerome N. Frank Legal Services Organization and the firm Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton

The consequences of NOT having a secure southern border are far more expensive in the longer run - a border wall is a bargain.
Expensive for whom exactly tenpound ? The cost the simple illegals will then have to pay for a new life? Or the increased cost(blood money) the Cartels will have to pay the US govt? A wall will slow down the traffic. But then only making "rush hour" never end imo.

Schools, health care, policing, infrastructure in general. Not cheap.

Then there's the labor distortion - do you think it's coincidence that the high black unemployment in the US isn't linked to the large amount of illegals here?

Not to mention the corrosive effect of effectively suspending the laws for Mexicans.

Pray tell why you think we should have a porous southern border?

Can we send them all to Canada? That'd double your population. If not, why should we take them on?
