@readalot I’ve really enjoyed your breakdown of the de minimus loophole stuff. Since you brought it up initially I’ve gone searching and found plenty of news articles on the topic.
What’s happened in this discussion is a perfect analogue to what seems to be happening in the ‘real world’ - most people are too busy worrying about who’s using which bathroom to even care about some bigger picture things that are happening that will ACTUALLY affect them.
Literally NOBODY that I’ve mentioned it to has had any idea what the loophole was, how they’ve heretofore benefited from it, or what it may mean for their pocketbook and lifestyle with regards to prices, taxes, etc. Temu, Shein, and I’d wager Amazon as well, won’t be able to operate the same way moving forward. I’m not a Temu/Shein user (that’s for the kids these days…shakes fist), but I can sort of see, in a blurry way, how closing the loophole may have some pretty broad consequences.
It’s going to be interesting to see what the economic and political consequences are, months and years from now.
