One crucible for theories of religion is their ability to predict and explain patterns of belief and disbelief.
Yet, religious nonbelief is often heavily stigmatized, potentially leading many atheists to refrain from outing themselves even in anonymous polls.
We used the unmatched count technique and Bayesian estimation to indirectly estimate atheist prevalence in two nationally representative samples of 2000 U.S. adults apiece.
Widely-cited telephone polls (e.g., Gallup, Pew) suggest USA atheist prevalence of only 3-11%.
In contrast, our most credible indirect estimate is 26% (albeit with considerable estimate and method uncertainty).
Our data and model predict that atheist prevalence exceeds 11% with greater than .99 probability, and exceeds 20% with roughly .8 probability.
Prevalence estimates of 11% were even less credible than estimates of 40%, and all intermediate estimates were more credible.
Some popular theoretical approaches to religious cognition may require heavy revision to accommodate actual levels of religious disbelief.

Ignorance is incredibly damaging.. ignorance to any topic.. but to continue the trend and not strive to understand the only way we can as people on this earth we will forever be at a stand still. At least science attempts to uncover the ignorance. There has been zero evidence of Christianity other than word of mouth during a time period that believed in anything it was presented. And please do not use the Bible as evidence...

We hypothesized that the vmPFC represents diverse religious beliefs and that a vmPFC lesion would be associated with religious fundamentalism, or the narrowing of religious beliefs.
To test this prediction, we assessed religious adherence with a widely-used religious fundamentalism scale in a large sample of 119 patients with penetrating traumatic brain injury (pTBI).
If the vmPFC is crucial to modulating diverse personal religious beliefs, we predicted that pTBI patients with lesions to the vmPFC would exhibit greater fundamentalism, and that this would be modulated by cognitive flexibility and trait openness.
Instead, we found that participants with dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) lesions have fundamentalist beliefs similar to patients with vmPFC lesions and that the effect of a dlPFC lesion on fundamentalism was significantly mediated by decreased cognitive flexibility and openness.
These findings indicate that cognitive flexibility and openness are necessary for flexible and adaptive religious commitment, and that such diversity of religious thought is dependent on dlPFC functionality.

One Idiot?
I'm 100% towards faith and believe. You can post all the science you want, it proves nothing. It proves our physical world. Even then, isn't it intelligent to question everything? We have science and history shoved down our throats. How do we really know everything being told is real? Call me ignorant, call me stupid, whatever. None of these comments will even put a dent on my belief because I questioned faith before. After some events which happened in my life and very strange occurrences, I made it through and survived. All this time I prayed to Jesus.
I'm more of an Orthodox Christian. I will admit religion is definitely touchy, though. Most religion is corrupt and hard to trust.
I'm sure I will regret posting this, but it doesn't matter.
