WWE

Some tag team action. The Steiners and LOD are my shiiiit.

Also I used to be a big Demolition fan. Now they look like S&M freaks.

I saw the Steiner Brothers vs The Nasty Boyz wrestle in UIC Pavilion in the early 90's and the match got completely out of control! Scotty Steiner (before he became Big Poppa Pump) got legit pissed at Brian Knobbs of the Nasties and they started working REALLY stiff (wrestling code talk for they got legit pissed off at each other and REALLY started making more contact than the script called for) and I was in the 3rd row (no one attended those shows those days, maybe total of 2k fans there). It was brutal how effing hard they were hitting each other with their "fake" punches and forearm shots. I mean you heard the damn thud sounds. At one point Rick Steiner, along with 2 refs, had to pull his own brother off of the opponent Knobs because they began punching each other for real. Imagine watching a wrestling match where one guy pulls his partner off of the opponent in the middle of the match? Bizarre!

Im pretty sure Rick and Scott were at the least legit wrestlers before pro wrestling. Could be wrong. But I was a huge fan of the old Steniers in the wrestling one piece and letterman jackets.

Bahaha Yeah, the Varsity Club, they were called. It was comprised of legit amateur collegiate wrestlers. The Steiner Brothers (University of Michigan), Dr Death Steve Williams (Oklahoma University), Mike Rotunda (I believe Syracuse?), and maybe Danny Spivey (?).

They wore the singlets. And maybe head gear?

But, I promise you that Dr. Death Steve Williams was probably the legit toughest mother effer of all of them! Tough ass dude! Had a rep as a legit bad ass mofo you stayed away from!

watching wwf/wwe promos from late 90s to mid 2000's on YouTube over the phone is what makes time fly when on a 45 min treadmill daily especially the attitude era or the take over... gets me pumped after a 90 mins to keep going☺️

Scott Steiner was known for being an out of control hot head
To the point where it affected his bank roll
He was sued for blasting a fan in the face for taunting him

He got knocked the fuck out quick by Bart Gunn though. Or it was Bradshaw. .. one of those two. In the brawl for all.

Meng / Haku.... HE was the baddest toughest guy in the history of wrestling. His encounters are stuff of LEGEND among the boys.

Oh yeah I've been watching :) I find the story hilarious, and am super excited that they're letting him show his intensity and skills finally. Last night was so awesome for him! I loved it

Thats the thing. He still has that comedy to him, but since he's been with Rhyno theyve given him some intensity back, hopefully that'll stick around. I know they won't keep the titles long, but I'd love a feud with the Miz down the line.

When he was in FCW they even had him work a short program with Edge while he was world champ, because they had faith in him. But people fall through the cracks, it happens. I'm just glad his fuse is lit again :)

Yeah, I wasn't saying Dr. Death was the toughest ever in the biz, just in that group of Varsity Club.

I believe by the time that went down with Bart Gunn, Dr. Death had already had cancer twice and was quite a bit older and diminished physically, if I am remembering correctly, right?

A lot of the old timers from the territory days that worked in Mid South (Duggan, DiBiase, etc) have always built Dr. Death up as far as being a legit tough dude. Those stories after get built up over the years though, too.

Truth, Michigan State alumn

Not Michigan State, but rather University of Michigan (Wolverines, blue and yellow). Correct?

I'm unsure whether he had already dealt with the throat cancer or not at that time, and am too lazy to search for verification, so I'll take you as correct on it. I DO know that the tournament was set up under the impression that DR. Death was going to run through everyone. And when lost it threw the whole plan out, and they brought in Butterbean. That alone speaks volumes to his legend as a legit Badass :)

And yes, my bad, UofM lol

Oh no, Butterbean?! I was kinda trying to eliminate that guy from my memory. Haha

Oh, I remember another guy that use to always go on and on about Dr. Death.... damn JR wouldn't shut up about him for a long time there, but I always assumed that was just his biased fellow OU alum love coming out.

It very well could have been. I mean he did ride Jack Swagger's Joc for the longest time. Simply because of the Sooner connection. Lmao

Haha Nah, we are discussing the fellas real life reps as being able to handle their business away from the cameras. Problem is, a lot of that stuff grows to legend status as time goes by, true or not. Lol

But - the dude @vani11agori11a referenced (Haku, aka Meng) is regarded by most as probably the craziest and toughest dude around during the 80's/90's. I mean, legit tough guy.

As you can imagine though, the stories start to borderline on ludicrous as time goes on, and predictably, the fellas always believe that the guys from their Era were the toughest.

But nah, def not arguing. Vani11agori11a has an interesting perspective, he worked with some of the boys in the past.

JR was kissing Dr Death's ass for decades because of the Sooner connection. As for him being the toughest member of the varsity club...Rick Steiner was just as batshit crazy as Scott in those days, I think that would be a closer fight than you'd expect.

Haku/Meng's rep as a bad ass has been around for ages - I remember the dirtsheets reporting his legendary reputation even back in the 80s so yes, very much legit.

When you can work in Japan, where most of the guys have amateur wrestling/martial arts backgrounds, and in Mexico, where backstage fights to the death were a real possibility, and still be feared like Meng was - that says it all IMO.

Very good points, the Steiners were def tough dudes and two of my favorites. I mean, look at my avi.;) Funny thing is, Rick is considered such a genuinely good dude backstage that he rarely had problems with anyone, and Scotty has always been considered a bad ass but more so in a bully way. You'll read and here a lot of stories of him pushing guys until they stood up to him, and then him backing down.

The point you make about Japan is interesting. Another thing about Japan is there were legit shoot spots in matches where American workers who weren't holding up their end of the deal and who weren't showing enough respect were dealt with harshly. Ironically, the aforementioned Dr Death was extremely succesful over there, along with Terry BAM BAM Gordy, Stan Hansen, Vader, and a few others as the Japanese fans LOVED big American wrestlers who were also considered legit tough guys.

Let me tell you first hand, as little Bickel found out in a high school gymnasium attending a wrestling event, an enraged Stan Hansen intentionally destroying the seating area (metal folding chairs) was terrifying to a 10 year old!
