Guys,

Anyone here have experience brewing with syringe filter brand besides Whatman? Medlab supply is out of the Whatman but has EZflow and Nalgene. I just have only ever used the Whatman brand.

Thanks,
R

what you fellas think about these syringe filters from amazon; $20 for 20 filters. Seem to be too cheap!

20 X Hydrophilic PES Sterile Syringe Filter, Diameter:25mm, Pore Size:0.22μm, Set of 20,for Ion Chromatography Solution Liquid Medicine Food Industry Beverage,Rapid Sterilization

Was planning on using these for filtering UGL finished oils.

It's because they aren't sterile

Yeah, I wish I knew of another brand besides whatman that were quality.. $1 a piece seems pretty cheap. I read on here somewhere that the Nalgene Nylon Sterile Syringe filter that is around $4 from medlab supply is garbage and will crack on you. With that being said, not sure how a $1 one would do.

Ive also heard that the 33mm Millipore Sterile PVDF syringe filters are really good quality but they are fairly expensive as well.. Not sure if anyone here has tried those.

Says sterile several times on there tho
I see that but I can't view the link. I've seen Tom's of syringe filters on Amazon and all of the one I'm bulk at that prices of $20 are not sterilized. It's possible he got lucky and found some though.

Despite them saying sterile, what if they didn't say that? Then what part of it isn't sterile? The outside of them? If the filter inside isn't sterile, then how do you safely sterilize it?

Seems kind of dangerous if the filter inside wasn't sterile. How could you be sure you completely sterilized it?

i'm asking because i really don't know shit about these filters, but i'm interested in learning their differences.

It's possible that they are vet grade or cosmetic grade too.
Now you guys have me thinking twice about these filters because of low price of $1/piece. Amazon has other sterile filters listed for similar price. ie.

I will get some Whatman or Naglene syringe filters that are $3-5/piece. This way I will have a piece of mind and be sure refiltering of a UGL finished oils and my first brew has no quality issues due to bad filters.

You don’t want to use a filter with a PES membrane. You want a filter with either a nylon, pvdf or ptfe filter membrane.

Appreciate the helpful comment.

Above filters from amazon being PES membrane type filters probably explains why they are 3-4times cheaper.
