Making Whole Oats Taste Good! Ideas?

We up necro-ing threads old enough to be learning algebra and reading Shakespeare? You guys gotta quit sleeping on savory oats. Cook them like the Cantonese do congee, boiled into porridge with aromatics, a cup of bone broth can be like 10g protein on its own, add half a chicken breast sliced into bits, scoop of unflavored protein right before eating. Soft boil an egg and mash it up in there to. I put in ginger, any kind of onion. Incredibly easy to meal prep if you don't mind the strangeness of freezing dry oats with raw chicken breast in a ziplog bag.

Cheese in oats is also great, like grits. Life changer is lean ground chicken or turkey disintegrates in water, into practically flavorless meat slop you can replace half the oats with.

I use real oats none of that instant stuff. Takes a bit longer but worth it and not long at all.

I use a mix of whole oats and ground oats. Then add 3x the water and toss in a teaspoon of sugar, some salt, and a tablespoon of coconut milk. Bring it to a boil and then reduce to medium until it's the consistency you like. Then add a bit of honey on top and your fruit of choice!

Glad you mentioned salt. Salt, even just a tiny bit, makes the difference between good and inedible.
Agree, salt is a must for oats, be it cooked or overnight.

If cooking, best to add the salt during the last 1-2 mins as otherwise it can reduce the softening of the oats during cooking.

Personally I also think 100% dairy milk is a must, preferably semi-skimmed (around 1.8% fat) as it makes the oats really creamy tasting. I’m not lactose intolerant though.

As for protein powder additions, milk protein concentrate gives a slightly more creamy taste & texture than using WPC & tastes far, far better than whey isolate. MPC is grossly underrated as a protein powder IMO.

Definitely milk, not water. You don't need as many steps to make it palatable if it's just prepared in milk.

1- Grind your oats in a blender
2- 75g oats, 310 milk of choice, 3/8th tsp (1/4 + 1/8) salt (IMPORTANT), stevia to taste or 23g brown sugar.
3- Pop in the microwave for 1 minute at a time, do 1 + 1 + 20-30 seconds, stir in-between.
4- Finish off with 10g honey on top + 3 dates or a sliced banana.

Thank me 20lbs later after you've had 10 bowls of this a day for the next month.
