Meso Powerlifting Corner

This amongst other reasons is why I put together my own home pl gym. Now the only one I hear it from is my wife. When I benched 400 in competition last year which had been a goal for a couple of years that was basically her response.

Haven't been around much lately due to work and too many douches in other threads here. Off season training currently but did hit a close grip PR of 380 last week. Close grip for me is pinkies on the smooth.

@Strength and Power sorry to hear about the pec. Part of the game most of us are way too familiar with. Hopefully it heals quickly.

That's the worst person to hear it from. Good to see you back though and congrats on the PR.

My little lady is very supportive of what I do, but I still hear the same from her. It is usually when she happens to be in the gym at the same time I am. She knows what I do, but she hates to see it. The one time she was actually in the gym when I had a severe nose bleed in the middle of a deadlift set, she came unglued. It took more effort calming her down than the effort I had put into the set. Congrats on the meet pr btw.

Thanks. My wife is relatively supportive but became less so after I tore a bicep tendon during a meet several years back and needed surgery. That along with a couple of hernia surgeries and two more noticeable hernias which will eventually need surgery and a couple of knee surgeries along with the fact that I'm approaching 50 has dulled her support.

Luckily, she realizes I'm going to continue competing until I can't do it anymore regardless of what she says so we don't argue about it.

Thanks my friend. You aren't the only one whose pull far exceeds your squat. Partially due to my knee issues and partially due to not training squats very heavy because I compete push/pull only now I don't think I could squat 400 currently and I should pull close to 600 at my next meet.

One thing Ive found in my short time as a PLer is how the injuries mount up. I was always used to working through some soreness but now it seems to last longer and longer (I guess that comes with age). Luckily I havent had anything major yet.

With a guy hitting the numbers that Strength and Power is hitting injuries and an inevitable part of the game. You try to minimize the risks with smart programming and strong form but when you are pushing those kind of numbers injuries are just something you deal with.

I'm getting close to turning 50 and will make a run at the top of the national rankings benching at 198 when I do. As I push training and supplementation to the red line to try to get the top spot my risk of injury will go up. Each person has to do their own risk vs. reward assessment and decide how hard they want to push their body.

If I was in your place I'd do the same thing without question. I'm sure most of us here would. Just have to do the best you can do in the smartest way you can and be ready for the consequences. I've been lucky with no major injuries so far myself, hope to stay that way as long as possible.

I had a full labrum tear on one shoulder and dislocated the other in a fight. When my shoulder redislocated, I had just hit 300lbs on bench and did pullovers. Took me about 3-4 years to get past 300 again. Nothing feels better than working after an injury, makjng a comeback, and becoming even stronger. Except Latinas. Latinas feel WAY better.

What about eating tacos or pizza or the first time you saw boobs or the first time you hit 2 plates? Can't tell me Latinas beat that? Cause if so sign me up for a spicy one cause I like my women to be little firecrackers

Right now if I can get a 4 plate bench or a 5 plate DL i would probably jizz on myself...right in the middle of the gym.

Biomechanics but also technique is also an issue. Hard to tell without seeing you lift in person or video analysis.

Do you oly or powerlifting squat? Do you sumo dead or conventional?

Powerlifting squat, conventional, slightly beyond shoulder width. I was deadlifting with a narrower stance, but changed it up after years of going pretty narrow. I think that may fix things. Before i was having to use a lot of back to get it started. Now that i widened it up a bit i start a bit more upright. I have tried sumo in the past, but decided it wasn't for me. So i widened it up to maybe 1 or 2 inches beyond shoulder width and took my grip out an inch.
