Perrin Aybara's Journey to an Elite Powerlifting Total

I can relate to this feeling too well. Ha. You'll get it back. Improvise, adapt, and overcome. I know this isn't your first rodeo. Lol.

Not at all, I think about 1/3 of the last year I've been off one lift or another. If I can't pull sumo I'll pull conventional, and if I can't pull either I'll focus on squat and bench. If I can't squat or pull at all I'll focus on bench. There's always something to improve on.

Medium grip bench
260lbs for 5x4

Hip still hurting pretty bad this morning, so definitely gonna need some time off.

Is your conventional catching up to your sumo? I've actually never pulled more than 600lbs conventional.

yes, they are pretty much neck and neck. pulled 675 conventional last month cause i knew gyms were going to close down soon. Hadnt touched over 575 since January. 2 days later it was announced gyms were closing at business end that day. pulled 675 sumo after not pulling sumo since January either. Conventional is more consistent.

qhen i ran Juggernaut AI i pulled conventional for 4 months straight. Pulled Sumo for the final 8 weeks of prep because that what the AI had told me. i wish i would have stuck with conventional. On my final 8's week of conventional, before transitioning to sumo, i pulled 605 x 8. ill be sticking with conventional moving forward. Doing some strongman comps this summer(if they do happen) so have to pull conventional anyways.

It's been so long since I pulled anything of note conventional. 500x10 and 600x1 is about all I remember. Sumo 600x7, 645x5, and 700x1. I feel like I'd have to work on conventional awhile to get anywhere near my sumo PRs.

For now I think I'm going to keep doing high bar squat and go back to conventional deadlift and continue with Sheiko. Then run a simple blast leading into test week and shoot for some PRs. I'd be happy with 635lbs on conventional to start out with.

I have been away for quite a while, but have been trying to follow your training when I am on here. My hats off to you man. You have been doing an amazing job with your training. It's good to see your still going strong.

Thanks. Still going strong, just having injury issues. Did finally manage to pull 700lbs in the gym last year, but missed in comp right after. Been dealing with hip issues since then unfortunately. Hit 405x2 bench and 405x1 front squat last year as well.

Switched to working night shift last month, so still getting used to that too. And obviously the gyms closing, so had to buy a home gym. But staying consistent and will get all the bugs worked out and be better than ever eventually. Glad to see you back around. Hope things are good with you.

Damn good job on the pr's!!! Damn good job. My training this past year has been awful. I had a surgery to remove a mass near my abdominal aorta, and that set me back several months. I was finally reaching my old numbers and 800 was finally in sight again, but just like last time, I tore my hamstring. I was then placed in a different department at work and we worked 6 days a week, 12 hour shifts. Recently I had the c6/c7 fused and wrapped. Damn, I'm starting to sound like a cry baby. Let me get back to YOUR thread. Lol. Is the pain in your hip subsiding at all? Do you only incur pain while doing the lift or is it a constant issue? Sorry if you have already spoke of it in your thread.

No, make yourself at home in my thread. I'm just food prepping for the week listening to an audiobook. My girlfriend works days, so Sunday night is a lonely one for me anyway. Sounds like you've had a worse year than me. But honestly I think this is the reality for most of us 30+ guys that are fairly strong and also have to work for a living. More and more injuries.

But the hip thing started when I pulled that 700lbs last September. A sports medicine specialized chiropractor thinks it's a rotational thing. I was struggling to lock it out with mixed grip and I think I rotated a little. At that point it wasn't so bad, just kind of a dull ache. Still performed okay at my meet in October. Then it got a lot worse as I kept training sumo fairly heavy and once it was hurting it affected squat.

Been off and on since. For awhile I didn't do any deadlift and then when I got back to it it came right back. Then a couple months this year I pulled conventional without any problems, but I'm not 100% sure it's better with conventional or just that my training max for conventional is 100lbs lower because I'm fine with light sumo and then getting up to moderate weight is when it starts hurting.

I just switched back to sumo a couple weeks ago and pulled some mid 500's singles easily with no pain and then the other day pulling the same weight for 4's from blocks got it hurting again. And it hurts the most when I wake up and once I'm moving it gets a little better. If I'm sitting a lot it's kind of a dull ache. When it first happened I thought it was lower back because it hurt so bad it felt like it was all over my back, but as it subsided it's obvious it's just one side and it's in my hip. Seems to come from the top of my hip bone right where I can feel it in my side. If it's like it has been it'll fade away over the next few weeks. It's just concerning it keeps coming back.

I agree, with the type of lifting we put our bodies through, the injuries tend to accumulate as we get older. I really hate to say it, but that does sound like a legitimate injury that may need to be looked at through imaging. The pain you are describing is what I began experiencing about 8 years ago. It also began while I was deadlifting with a sumo stance. I spoke to a very knowledgeable physiologist and he told me the same thing that you described. It was a rotational injury that was causing inflammation in the hip. He had me lay off training for a few weeks and actually came in to the gm with me one day. He gave me some advice about foot placement and the angle at which my foot was placed. I followed his advice, modified my pull, and I havent had the pain ever since. It sounds like your pain is worse and perhaps an actual injury. Damn man, I really hate to hear that. Have you thought about getting any imaging done on it?

I did think about and ended up going the chiropractor route to try that first. Then the last couple months I'd been pretty pain free. With the coronavirus situation I don't know if getting imaging done is even possible right now. I'll have pretty good insurance with this new job, so definitely a possibility after.

What was the foot placement issue? I kinda point my toes out wide on sumo and it's the lockout that causes the pain for sure.

That is very true, with all the cancelled and back logged requests for imaging, it could take months to get it looked at.
The issue I was having was with how wide my stance was and the toe placement I was using with it. He recorded a few of my lifts, and I could actually see that my thighs were rolling in at the joint towards the top of the lift. I brought my stance in a couple of inches and turned my toes out just a little more. It was amazing how that small change made such a huge difference.

Switching my Tuesday workout to Wednesday for now. Monday will be crazy at work for awhile and I'm getting home too late to realistically wake up in time to lift on Tuesday.

Since I'm off lower body for now I just went ahead and warmed up bench and repped out 315lbs today. Surprisingly got 315x10 which beat my all time PR of 315x9 last year.

I’ve experienced similar issues with multiple peptides sources. I don’t like to order anything more than I’m willing to loose. Same with gear. Much better luck with UGL’s than peptide sellers
