Strongman Thread

Waiting for my buddy to go onstage for classic physique.

But the short story, all events were 60 seconds except yoke and car

Log 230# 7 reps
Deadlift 515 # 10 reps
Car pull, 50' 14 seconds
Yoke walk 650# 100' 36 Seconds
Atlas stone 310# 4 reps

I was middleweight 231 and under.
Congrats man! Conventional barbell deadlift or wagon wheel?

Yeah...but did you DIEo_O

For the most part , I performed exactly how I trained and expected to.

But atlas stones, let me tell you, I shifted into a gear I didn't know I had.

I was really worried about stones, as my training I hadn't yet put our 330 lb stone over the bar.

This stone was 310. I literally had so much explosiveness and power I cleared the 4' bar by an extra 8" and dunked the fucking thing over.

It was the highlight of the comp for me bc the competition and the crowd lost it. Everyone made it look super tough before that, and I just blew it out.

I was exhausted and only needed 4 to seal my win, so I called it quits on that rep. Fun times Screenshot_20171028-201627.png

Pro card in your future.

Normally I'd say you were crazy, but a LOT of guys didn't believe this was my first comp, or that I had only been training strongman for about 7 weeks.

Got a few invites to train at private gyms as well, and asked to join a second federation I had no idea existed.

I'd definitely say it's a good possibility for you!

I remember reading about one strongman that competed in his first meet and blew everyone away, thought he was hot shit and went to nationals and got fucking smoked lol. Things will get tougher but perseverance pays off.

Definitely not Nationals ready. I know about where I need to be to be competitive, and it's a ways down the road for me.

But after today, I think I have a better future in strongman than power lifting.

A good year worth of training and a few more meets under my belt will be a good start.

Fuck yes @Dw725 congrats my man!

You're making me excited for my meet to be over and try out some strongman stuff! Although I say that now...

Depends on the numbers I hit meet day. I've been saying I was going to have a strongman day in my training but have yet to implement it.

Is 4' standard height for stones?

I think it varies depending on the comp. I know some have an event where you have to load stones at increasing heights.

I'd say 48" is a good height for most training tho, especially if you're getting to body weight stones and larger.

Brian alsruhe (spelling?) Recommends shouldering stones. I'm not at a level where I feel comfortable shouldering the stones available to me yet tho.

@Eman what size is the atlas stone you made and are you happy with the size/circumference?

Edit: nevermind I seen where you posted it was 16inches and around 175lbs.I'm dumb:p

I'm generally happy with it. It's very light and I'm going to make a much heavier one but it's a nice practice stone. It's good to learn technique with and shouldering it repeatedly does make for good conditioning.

Atlas stones are very much a thing of technique. If you can drill the technique into your head over and over again with a light weight, it'll make all the difference when you're doing heavier weight for max attempts or reps.

I may try the globe deal like you did, I don't really want to shell out $120 for a mold I probably wouldn't use but a couple times. Any specific type of concrete mix to use, added fiber?

I didn't use any fiber. I forget what kind of mix I used... I'll look when I get home. It was a "pro grade" something or other.

Another option, buy a reusable mold and add lead or styrofoam to change the weight. I'm going to be able to get a bunch of different stones out of one mold this way. I still liked the plastic globe method though!

I got 50lbs of lead that used to be tire weights from when I'd make sinkers, thought about making a sledge hammer out of plate steel then filling it with the lead but an atlas stone would be a good use for it too.
