What R U Eating ? ~OGH wants to know.....

At the King Ranch those fuckers are always on the run. I’ve hunted them for years and have never seen one not on the run. That’s actually how you spot them. If they’d sit still they’d be harder to find. We chase them down with trucks to wear them down to kill them. I’m told over in India where they originated from they just walk around like cattle.

Here’s a truck we chase them down with and shoot from. Such a good time. There will be 4 -5 of us up top just drinking beer and someone will yell “Nilgai two o’clock” and beer gets tossed and rifles come up.

Yeah, thats "hunting" the southern way.

I distinctly remember stalking, tracking and using terrain and wind to gain an advantage over our prey. On open land that i wasnt chauffered around in and told where to shoot and find the game. You know like the natives did it?
What do i know. Im just a yankee anyway

There is a huge divide between southern and northern hunters. Two completely different skill sets.

Bith have their appeals in my opinion.

Up here in Canada, hunting is similar.
Cleansing clothes, checking windage.. moving into position in the dark with zero scent or sound,

We do a lot of planning ans surveying to find the perfect spot.. a little wind the wrong way... whole week is fucked.

@Human_backhoe and I got fucked over last years fall bear hunt.. one of the boys left some shit on the ground, spooked the trophy bear.

Was a shitty and cold 4 days not moving

No doubt. I completely agree. I actually hate to call it hunting. Some folks pay a small fortune for this type of hunt. It’s definitely an experience of a life time that I dont take for granted. Actually my first year to go I met Rhonda Rousey out there. I go for free with work. It’s a team building experience. Good people, food and music around a camp fire at night. During the day we day drink while riding on top of a truck and shoot at Nilgai and hogs. Far from hunting. Around 20 of us go and we always bag around 10 Nilgai. I go home with at least 100 lbs of meat every year.

Not all the time Trukk. The King ranch is bigger that alot of states in the US. Nilgai are non native species that will proliferate and take away from the native species like deer. This coupled with the thick brush make it hard to balance things out. Lots of folks choose to hunt more traditionally also. I get it when you have a 10 acre soybean field and two acres of brush to hunt but when you hunt in Texas one pasture might be 5 thousand acres. I get your point but not all hunting in the south lacks the hardcore hunting skill set you speak of. The last ranch I was foreman of took at least three days of constant daylight driving to see it all.

I didnt grasp the southern idea of hunting till i moved down here. Leases and ranches didnt exist up north. At least not NY. The adirondacks, the catskills, the thousands and thousands of acres of state land that was free to hunt. The mohawk, oneida and seneca indian territories(if you had a family member that was native). And all the valleys on each way of the mountains like the one i lived in there were no catered hunts. It didnt exist. The only way you bagged game is if you were damn good and patient. Its so different down here.

In the corps we diverted urban marines to the combat hunter program. Its a course that teaches marines who grew up in the city or shall i cringe, south, to use skills generations of marines had before them that came natural. Things they were brought up doing. The natural instincts of any hunter. In todays generation that skill set is mostly lost. Hunting and tracking bad guys isnt alot different than game. I just find this whole thing irritating

Commercial hunting and all that goes with it has put a "skid mark" on southern hunting in general. I was raised up to hunt in the more traditional methods but I cant lie I've fed myself and my family by babysitting a bunch of super rich folks who never even touch their animal except for the picture. Hell I've even shot the animal for some "hunters" because they didn't have the skill set you speak of. Got paid good for it I might add.

But,,, just the King Ranch alone is over 1300 square miles! Well over twice the size of New York! That's just one ranch!

Yea we drive around a bit to see what's happening. ;):D

These southern cats got these big ideas about new yorkers. They dont have any idea were more country than 90% of texans ever could dream of being. Even with their gay ass pointy toed boots lol

I was sitting in Lexington Massachusetts center a few weeks ago eating lunch on a beautiful day. My semi old ass sitting in the grass up against a tree, wondering if the red coats blood is still providing nutrients after all these years. I know it isn't lol. the pride I have knowing how prolific our courage was and how savage our tactics were is almost untamable. That mindset and need for freedom is far from gone. I would love to have been part of that history.

Greatest upset of all time. To defeat the worlds largest and most well funded military was some thing we should be extremely proud of. And to do it with tradesmen who were sick to death of british oppression is even more noble. George Washington was the spearhead of the entire movement and there has been no more important man in our history than him. The man that refused in true disgust the offer to become king of his new country. The man who was responsible for setting up a govt of the people, by the people and for the people. A man who peacefully stepped down after his 2nd term as first sitting US president to John Adams. He believed whole heartedly in what he fought for and helped create and no notion of power would persuade him to leave the course. That is why we as Americans are different. Because no other nation ever in existence was born in blood and cast in nobility the way we were. We are the heirs and our children heirs and their children heirs to some thing magnifiscient. And it must be protected.

Like Jefferson wisely wrote " those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety. Deserve neither liberty nor safety"

Nothing is more in true in these times

the shameful thing about it all is a minority of Americans know this history, and it's getting more watered down as the years pass.

Muddy the waters a bit with slave trade and ownership talk and school districts stop teaching it all together because it offends people to be forced to learn about slave owners, despite the significance of their existence.

Wild what is happening in our country

Thats the thing about free speech. It gives a voice to the dumb. And many people subscribe to it. Stir the mirky waters with academic prestige, political hierarchy and lots of money and any asshole that preaches socialism via political stage or professor at a college can dupe impressionable folks in to thinking along their lines. Add in a free press which backs and idolizes these movements and disguises itself as news isnt helping.

lol, free press. That is a goofy thought. They decry any movement to stifle their ability to report but don't report accurately because it doesn't fit a narrative. Pretty far from free.

On my uncles. NEWYORK dairy farm ,he kept an 870 pump in the tractor for geese and a .22-250 in the barn by a window for coy dogs, chucks and deer. It wasn't about hunting, just managing the farm.
Down here in the south, hunting with hounds to get the deer up and moving is a lot of fun, however this practice has lost favor over the years because of all the new housing and loss of habitat. Once again this was done to put meat into homes. Far from unfair the Deer won most of the chases through the Cypress.
