Current Knowledge about the Risks and Benefits of Raw Meat-Based Diets (RMBD) For Dogs and Cats

(Include Title)]

The feeding of RMBDs to dogs and cats has received increasing attention in recent years. The American Animal Hospital Association, AVMA, and Canadian Veterinary Medical Association have adopted statements discouraging the inclusion of raw or undercooked animal source protein in dog and cat diets.

The Delta Society’s Pet Partners Program expressed concern that pets in a therapy animal program could be shedding pathogens in the presence of immunocompromised humans and other at-risk human populations. Therefore, they adopted in 2010 a policy that precludes animals that eat RMBDs from participating in their therapy animal program.

For each of the organizations, the primary reason indicated to oppose feeding of an RMBD was that potential pathogen contamination of the uncooked meat causes health risks to the pet fed the diet as well as to other pets, human family members, and members of the public in contact with the pet.

These statements did not address other potential problems of RMBDs, such as potential nutritional imbalances or other safety issues of the diets (eg, feeding bones); they also did not address the reasons people want to feed these diets or potential benefits of this type of diet.

A major problem in the discussion about potential risks and benefits of RMBDs is the paucity of good data from high quality studies. Information on nutritional risk or benefit is often from low-quality studies (testimonials, case series, or poor-quality cohort and case-controlled studies).

The evidence for infectious disease risks when feeding RMBDs is of better quality and quantity, but few studies have been conducted to compare the risk of feeding RMBDs with that of feeding commercial foods, and no reports have been published on evaluation of the long-term risks and benefits of feeding RMBDs. The lack of consensus and paucity of good data can make it difficult for veterinarians to provide informed feeding recommendations to dog and cat owners.

The intent of the information reported here is to provide a balanced review of the issue of feeding RMBDs, types of RMBDs, reasons these diets are fed, and potential benefits and risks associated with feeding of RMBDs. The information will also highlight areas in which additional research is needed to better delineate benefits and risks.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVzNeyoabUA]Dog social network emerges from walking data - YouTube[/ame]

Akos Z, Beck Rb, Nagy Mt, Vicsek Ts, Kubinyi E. Leadership and Path Characteristics during Walks Are Linked to Dominance Order and Individual Traits in Dogs. PLoS Comput Biol 2014;10(1):e1003446. PLOS Computational Biology: Leadership and Path Characteristics during Walks Are Linked to Dominance Order and Individual Traits in Dogs

Movement interactions and the underlying social structure in groups have relevance across many social-living species. Collective motion of groups could be based on an “egalitarian” decision system, but in practice it is often influenced by underlying social network structures and by individual characteristics. We investigated whether dominance rank and personality traits are linked to leader and follower roles during joint motion of family dogs. We obtained high-resolution spatio-temporal GPS trajectory data (823,148 data points) from six dogs belonging to the same household and their owner during 14 30–40 min unleashed walks. We identified several features of the dogs' paths (e.g., running speed or distance from the owner) which are characteristic of a given dog. A directional correlation analysis quantifies interactions between pairs of dogs that run loops jointly. We found that dogs play the role of the leader about 50–85% of the time, i.e. the leader and follower roles in a given pair are dynamically interchangable. However, on a longer timescale tendencies to lead differ consistently. The network constructed from these loose leader–follower relations is hierarchical, and the dogs' positions in the network correlates with the age, dominance rank, trainability, controllability, and aggression measures derived from personality questionnaires. We demonstrated the possibility of determining dominance rank and personality traits of an individual based only on its logged movement data. The collective motion of dogs is influenced by underlying social network structures and by characteristics such as personality differences. Our findings could pave the way for automated animal personality and human social interaction measurements.

Bailoni L, Cerchiaro I. The role of feeding in the maintenance of well-being and health of geriatric dogs. Vet Res Commun 2005;29 Suppl 2:51-5. The Role of Feeding in the Maintenance of Well-Being and Health of Geriatric Dogs - Springer

Ageing, like all physiological effects, has a multifactorial origin and is linked to the progressive reduction in the function of some organs and systems.

Feeding can play an important role in the control of the ageing process by the improvement of quality of life and the prevention of some pathologies associated with age (renal diseases, obesity, rheumatism, dental pathologies, cardiovascular disorders).

Clinical nutrition of old dogs allows us to clarify the animals' nutritional requirements, the required balance of nutrients, the quality of ingredients and dietetic function of some substances.

Twenty commercial dry foods formulated for old dogs were analysed. A wide variability of chemical composition was observed among the samples. Very different values were found for size and hardness of kibbles (parameters correlated with the incidence of some dental diseases).

Good availability of foods with different nutritional characteristics could be useful to the needs of geriatric dogs. Similarly, a balanced home-made ration could satisfy the specific requirements of old dogs and gratify their owners.

In conclusion, a diet for ageing dogs should be "personalized", considering both the nutritional and extra-nutritional factors, which contribute to guarantee optimal well-being and health.

Wait till your dog is so old that it has urinary retention issues, and in short needs a DIAPER. When you have a dog that is already adverse to getting her toes dirty, and has already developed a propensity to WANT to hold her piss till FORCED by mother nature to go. ONE LESSON IS DON'T LET your dog develop this habit as they will wind up with TRUCKERS BLADDER - (like mine).

So I spend my days walking out back with mine after demanding she come to the door. Then I have to walk out in the back yard with her, so that she will TRUST that I am not going to ditch her out there. And finally on many occasion I have to pull it out and start pissing to let her know that's the agenda, and that the clock is ticking (cause daddy's feet are getting cold too - LOL).

** I AM saving some money on toilet flushe$...
** It WOULD make a great poster...!
** Although it IS hilarious to see her get excited when your mother comes over, bends down to pet her, and that tail starts flinging that PISS PUDDLE all over her...[:o)]:D

Wood floors WILL NEED to be repaired and refinished. TRUE LOVE......;)

Whats AMAZING about this FACT, is that dogs can not only QUALIFY scents with PRECISION in LOCATION.... They can also QUANTIFY the principle object..!! (In short, tell you HOW MUCH of something is there sight unseen)

My golden lab KNOWS where EVERY SPEC of food is in this house, WHAT KIND it is, and HOW MUCH OF IT THERE IS. This dog has a particular hankering for SWEETS.!! To those researching - BE AWARE - the "sweet eaters" not only tend to be the ones getting themselves in trouble, but they appear to be the ones with the most discerning noses..!!! OR PERHAPS they are just the ones with the LEAST SELF CONTROL.!! Go figure..

I can leave a filthy fast food bag sitting on a table with varying contents. It may have had burger, fries, chicken, whatever smeared it it and even later fed to another dog and now empty - and she KNOWS the value in the bag. BREAD being the PRIME TARGET ALWAYS (even next to meat).

* A couple of rogue fries remaining, and she will bide her time and get it at her discretion.
* A burger and she knows its not trash yet, but has EYES ON. The rule is a couple of hours and its fair game if left "low".
* A crumpled up bag with some bun in it left behind by the girls - IT WILL GET GOT.!
* An empty bag which is covered with all the contents of any fast food you can imaging, and she wont even bother, she knows it empty from across the room.
* A bag with a whole bun tossed in there by a daughter trying to eat the patty to get out of eating dinner, and she will take it off the table in front of you..

I've witnessed her hanging outside the girls room for hours, finally getting in, and going on the hunt. UNDOUBTEDLY, she will always turn up a CHEEZ-IT Cracker BURYING under toys, clothes, whatever, and when I thought there was no prize to be had... She then leaves cause she knows there is nothing left to be had..

In Short - she can walk in any strange room and tell you in an instant where every single bit of food is, and how much of it is in each spot.. He missions are clearly motivated by HOW MUCH is there as well....!

Two questions: pain meds and urine retention drugs for dogs. Anyone?

Why can't a dog have Tylenol or Advil? At least I've heard Tylenol will harm them. My girl is old with arthritis and I'm feeling guilty for bogarting. What pain meds can they really handle?

Second, apparently when they get old and start pissin themselves/ the drug of choice is an amphetamine. Apparently it's TGE exact same one known as DEXATRIM which was banned. Will damphetamine work? Anyone got the prescribing info for that stuff? What's the difference?

My 12 yo dog was pissing in the house, got a script for proin (dexatrim) from the vet and haven't had an accident since!! The stuff works.

Yea, that's what they are calling phenylpropanolamine(PPA) these days/ or used to call Dexatrim(in humans)), ONLY for some reason it has been removed from the market (not even docs can write)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenylpropanolamine

Excerpts:
"In the United States, PPA is no longer sold due to a proposed increased risk of stroke in younger women. In a few countries in Europe, however, it is still available by either prescription or sometimes over-the-counter. In Canada, it was withdrawn from the market on May 31, 2001.[2] In India human use of PPA and its formulations were banned on 10 February 2011.[3]

Pharmacology[edit]

Phenylpropanolamine acts as a potent and selective releasing agent of norepinephrine and epinephrine, or as a norepinephrine releasing agent (NRA). It also acts as a dopamine releasing agent (DRA) to a lesser extent. It works by mimicking the effects of endogenous catecholamines such as epinephrine and norepinephrine, and to a lesser degree dopamine.

Many sympathetic hormones and neurotransmitters are based on the phenethylamine skeleton, and function generally in "fight or flight" type responses- such as increasing heart rate, blood pressure, dilating the pupils, increased energy, drying of mucous membranes, increased sweating, and a significant number of additional effects.

The use of it has been shown to potentiate the effects of caffeine."

I actually tried to hunt some generic down so as not to ay the vet service charges, BUT I CANT SEEM TO FIND IT AVAILABLE FOR SHIT...! I find it interesting that they cite risk for stroke in YOUNGER WOMEN. I think its classified as an amphetamine, it DOES talk about the NE/Dop effects, but why strokes in women?? I am thinking it is somehow involving in the sex hormone area/ estrogens considered, so it further makes me wonder the unspoken, unwritten, or intentionally omitted sex hormone effects of Adderall. I KNOW that all drugs have very different and specific effects, but this is what what I do...:D Also if you note above, it even got banned in INDIA in 2011..! Which means its Mexico or bust I am guessing... Which brings me to.... Another thing I'm good at is vectoring off on TANGENTS.. So BACK ON TARGET...:drooling::D

A little more research and I found some animal/pet related forums where some people were talking about their dogs stroking, and wishing they had known. But I suspect the risk is minimal. I do recall taking dexatrim ONCE when I was really young trying to tweek out a last few pounds of fat, and reading of the label about a slight risk of sudden death. I remember it did strike me, but no more than the one about chicks dying when they pop in their first twat mop... LOL & JJ for the purpose of analogy..

As for the effects I seem to recall it was just a general nasty feeling which did NOT leave me hankering for another experience. So if it is indeed "amphetamine" then Adderall AINT. A further look at the WIKI and they call it a "Stimulant", which makes more sense to just classify it as an "upper". So perhaps the first place I researched it is just about as ignorant as everyone else in the medical field.. LOL But I would bet it would add nicely to my current Adderall, nicotine, caffeine STACK...:drooling:

There's a newer NE/Serotonin drug out there today called Savella, and thinking about, its probably just a more intense smoothed out version. I'm pretty sure Savella kills its share randomly as that's some strong shit which requires heavy titration.. Oooops!! There I go again...

OK FINAL TARGET...!

Thanks Mitch for the input. This is the one drug I have read on. My mother seems to think they gave a dog I had as a kid "hormones" to stop her from pissing. Anyone heard of that? Or anyone got other suggestions/references.?? I did find and 5 year old bottle of the stuff in the dog supply box and gave it to her and it did work a little, only I think they were too old and only the smaller dose. A major pain in my ass appears to be the 3x's day administration. So a guess its pretty fast acting with no hang time. But that's tough to maintain that schedule. Shit, I don't even gobble that regularly. This is liable to increase my drug usage. LOL

I guess one thing I am hunting for is for someone to point me to links indicating the amphetamines in Adderall would work the same. So then I could just chip off a piece for her every day with my dosing, and we could have a party together. She's a pretty sharp pup. I bet we could have some great interaction together if I got her all hopped up with me.. LOL Actually, she would probably out-wit my and have me fetch Frisbees for her. Or more like hamburgers.. LOL
